Inability to get through a download/random script

$

Hello,

Having a very frustrating problem and have no idea what to target. My computer will not finish downloading anything. It starts out strong, and gets to the very end, when all of a sudden it warns be about files being corrupted. I tried this with various updates (Java, Adobe Flash Player) and programs (Opera browser, Winrar) and I am unable to download/install anything without some kind of 'corrupt' warning coming up.

The weird thing is, I am at my grandma's for winter break (I'm in college), and her two computers have the SAME PROBLEM. So we have three computers, with all different virus protection and all different operating systems, but hooked up to the same router, with this problem. It has extended passed being unable to download things... I get random script on webpages, and certain videos and games refuse to load all together.

My own computer's problems began when I noticed freezing in my videos.. and not just regular lag. My video was freezing at the exact same spots every single time I played it, which was multiple times. I was also getting some minor script, not enough to ruin the webpage, but it was there. I thought it may be a Firefox problem, so I uninstalled Firefox, intending to reinstall it. However, that's when I found out I was unable to download anything, and I couldnt get Firefox back. I decided I'd try a System Restore and went back just two days, just to get Firefox back, and though I did get it back, it came up with 'cannot find XPCOM'. So I still have no access to Firefox (which was my main browser).

My grandma had brought one of her computers in to a tech guy just a few days ago (we hadn't yet understood what exactly was happening to our computers, and mine was not yet effected at that point) but she paid over $100 and either the guy didn't do anything, or the problem returned when she hooked it back up here.

Is it possible something is wrong with the router/connection? It seems most likely since all three computers were effected but I'm not sure what to target.

My computer is an HP Pavilion with Intel Pentium, running Windows Vista, 64-bit. 4GB system memory, 500GB hard drive.

My grandma's router is a Netgear Rangemax - WPN824v2.

I would really appreciate any help!

Missing OPERATING system

Hi all,

I got a blue screen error message saying "memory dump". Now when I start my computer it says "missing operating system".
1. I tried to reinstall Windows 7/64 bit with my installation disk. Didn't work.
2. Tried to use a system restore disk that I made when the computer was new. Didn't work.
3.Tried to boot up from an old HD with windows on it. No luck
4. Tried to boot up in the safe mode. Got the same error message.

What more can I do to recover my missing operating system?
How does a computer "lose" an operating system?

Thanks for your help,
Dan

Recently, I added a 2nd monitor to my desktop. Now whenever I play a game (currently Battlefield 3), the Color Theme message comes up messes with my game. I have to disable the message before I can resume. Anyone can tell me how I can disable this mesasge from coming up ever again?

Here's the pop up message:

Do you want to change the color scheme to improve performance?

Change the color scheme to Windows 7 basic
Keep the current scheme but ask me again if my computer continues to perform slowly
Keep the current color scheme and don't show this messsage again.

I always choose the 3rd optionn but it comes up again later.

presario a945us laptop. running vista home premium. have learned lots of things over the years and when something goes wrong, i learn to fix it, but now there is too much to fix... long time to start, long time to shut down.

NEW problems. the green vista kernel loading bar, which used to cycle 7 or 8 times now cycles SEVENTY, 71 or 72 times before the windows logo page comes up. THEN, (and this is for a while) the 'welcome' page takes a while. but, after that, (with my recent clean boot settings), my desktop comes RIGHT up--which didn't used to happen--taskbar would show, desktop would flash between my background and black, eventually coming on full.

now, this is the "routine"--what i go through to start. this has been going on for a couple of years. after logging in, a uac note comes up--'system properties change computer name', which i have to cancel to continue. it USED to be a regular small popup, now it's the larger one which asks to even show the small one. i've been hitting 'cancel' on the 'cancel' or 'allow', though if i hit 'allow', the small uac popup comes and i hit 'cancel' on that. no forums have been able to give me ANY info on what that means.

then, the 'low disk space on 'd' drive' comes up (which makes no sense--that is hp recovery partition and that is ALL that exists there...)--have to hit 'cancel' on that. THEN, i USED to have to wait until EVERYTHING started--including sidebar--before i could go online, and when i hit the firefox in the quickstart taskbar, i'd have to do it twice before the browser would come on. sure, it showed on task manager, but took a LONG time to come up. now, with the clean boot, i don't have that problem either.

however, all of a sudden, with the clean boot, every time i start, i have to start the firewall manually. it no longer comes on by itself, nor defender--i get that popup saying it's not on. only reason i'm running it is every time i try and do either a malwarebytes scan or a kapersky scan, the pc freezes up during scanning, though, i'm pretty sure it's clean. defender and spybot say so...

o, and also--since the clean boot, my cursor again seems to have a mind of its own, which i kind of took care of a while ago, but now it's back. so, what i'm trying for here is one of you whizzes will have SOME kind of info, answer and help--if ANYONE has ANY ideas. please let me know what you might need and i'll post it. thanks so much in advance...

A frustrating issue

I've been having this problem over the past couple of days where occasionally my computer will freeze while completing a task and a text box that i'm hovering over with the mouse will stay imprinted on the screen until I completely turn off the PC and turn it back on. If I try and switch user / log off the mouse won't work at all until I turn off the computer.

Has anyone got anyway to solve this issue? I've tried updating drivers and downloading windows updates, but to no avail.

using windows 7 home premium.
ive ran malwarebytes, roguekiller, and hitmanpro.
used uninstall tools for all antivirus programs previously uninstalled.
currently using Microsoft essentials.
I've tried everything.
renameing windows defender is the only that will allow downloads.but I know that is not a permanent fix and the problem still persists.

Arranging Folders by Month

$

I have folders like this:

I would like to have Windows chronologise my folders in the order that the months appear in the calendar (e.g. January, February, March, etc.) from top to bottom. The problem I am experiencing is due to the way Windows sorts. Although we recognize months by their name (Jan/Feb, etc), Windows only knows that F comes before J, so when these names are sorted, they are not in the expected order.

I don't want to use organize by last modified since it will only work until I put an item into an older folder.

Here are the possible workarounds I've come across:

Quote:

use a number at the beginning of the file name. The Jan and Feb folders might be:
01-Jan
02-Feb
Quote:

use the date in this order:
year_month, so the Jan & Feb 08 folders might be called:
08_01
08_02
Or, make new folders in the correct order then sort by date created.

I don't want to number them 1-12 unless it's the last resort. Nor do I want to use 3rd party software.

Any other ways?

Hello, a few days ago a file called %SystemDrive% appeared on my desktop. I know this is a very important file so I didn't 'touch' it. Then today, once I opened my computer it said "Preparing Desktop" and then the Desktop looked funny and it said "you have been logged on with a temporary profile". I rebooted it, and it my normal desktop came back but my computer was quite slow. I then went on to deleting some unused games and programs. What can I do to prevent this from happening and how can I hide the SystemDrive folder? Help is much appreciated, thanks.

Recovery will not launch

I posted in HD issues about needing to restore my PC to factory settings. Masterchefxx17 and joeten gave me the advice I needed. Though now I have another issue. I have an HP p6350z running Win7 when I hit F11 on start up I am not given an option to recover/restore. When the PC is up and running and I click on Recovery Manager it does not appear. When I CTRL+ALT+DEL it shows it in the background but will not come up (this same thing happens with Origin and Steam games now which is why I am restarting my PC after exhausting all other options, including antivirus permissions and the like.)

Though now I wonder if when I connected an external HD several months back if it is interfering with something. When I start the PC now I have to hit "ESC" to boot from my main HD, even when the external is not plugged in.

So basically my questions are how to I get to recovery when it seems blocked and is it possible the external is causing these conflicts where program launch in the background but do not load fully?

ok so iv been having this problem with my laptop

its a sony vaio pcg-7184L

at first it would not boot up and the screen hangs with a blinking underscore

i read that that is caused by a bad formated flashdrive

so i followed at tutorial on how to format using cmd and it worked however it gave me a screen that says windows setup( ems enabled( and x64 recover(ems enabled)

i clicked windows startup and it loads windows files but it gets stuck on windows setup screen..it just loads forever

i used windows 7 usb/dvd tool to make a bootable flash drive

also when i boot up from internal drive it gets to windows loading screen then reboots again...

so what do you guys think the problem is, its been driving me crazy

also before it gets to the endless windows setup screen it asked to choose language and time zone, however i get no option to format hardrive or make a partition.

so ty in advance

KB 2898785 Update stops access of webmail

I am using Win 7 and IE11. After KB 2898785, update was installed, I was no longer access my webmail accounts as I used to. At first I thought this had a different cause, but after installing and restoring to an earlier date, several times, it is obvious, that if I install this security update the problem returns. Is there anything I can do, or shall I just ignore this update and see if a later update fixes the problem?

Cpu failing

I am usually smart with computers and can fix most issues but this one I cannot. My laptop is more than capable of running any program I need but after installing 8gb of ram recently(I know that the ram is properly installed) whenever I open even a simple program like chrome My cpu usage jumps to between 80-100% and then if I let it set it will settle back down to approximately 5%. Then if I even open another tab it jumps back up to about 70-80 Cpu usage and will again quickly settle back down. I have run many virus scans, cleaned out my laptop entirely of dust, and then reinstalled windows onto my laptop but the same still occurs. When the cpu spikes physical memory stays around 10%.
