Boot.ini Location in Win7?

$

I'm probably asking the question wrong, here's my situation:

I have my current Win7 installation on my C: drive, and a new Win7 installation on my D: drive. When the system boots, I'm presented with an option to select either "Windows 7" or "Windows 7". I'd like to be able to rename one, the other or both of these so that I can know which one is which. ("Win7 New", "Win7 Old", etc...)

I think I remember WinXP had a file at the %System Root%\ named "boot.ini", but I can't find that anywhere, so I assume something has changed.

Where is the text file that I need to edit in order to make these changes, what is it called, etc... ? And also, what is currently the favored Boot Manager. Most of my information is dated (example, Hijack This isn't even used anymore), and I don't want to use something that is obsolete. Thanks in advance.

Hi, new here
I am trying to get to a page to edit my pension plan, but I keep receiving this note :
Access Denied (policy_denied)

Your system policy has denied access to the requested URL.

For assistance, contact your network support team.

Using Win 7 I've no problem getting to other pages with Chrome, but this one blocks me

Have read some of the info that others have posted but not having any luck ?

I tried the CMD run as administrator as noted in a link to ENable/disable,then log off , when I clicked on the new Admin button - it said disabled, so had to log back on with org log on .

Guest User Account Problem

Hello,
I have a Windows7 home premium Toshiba laptop (SP 1) that I recently acquired from a used laptop shop. I requested that an administrator user account with a password and a Guest User account be set up so that our kids can use the guest account without downloading anything from the internet.
The problem is that our Administrator account has an internet connection and access, but not so on the Guest. The laptop shop guy is not familiar with how the guest account works (????) so I am on my own, unless someone here can help.
I can connect with our home internet system using the Administrator account then switch user to the guest account and attempt to browse (firefox), but it says my machine is not connected to a server, even though less than a minute earlier on the Administrator account, I was connected.

Can someone give me any direction on this to resolve?

Thank,
Smart Un

Kernel Event Tracing Event ID 2

Hi,

For the past 3 nights between 2100 and 2200 Event Viewer has been recording a string of approximately 150 'Kernel Event Tracing'events. The system works ok, but as I sit and watch, the event viewer racks up about 1 every 5 seconds. I have attached a screen shot.

The PC is about 5 years old, but this install of Windows 7 SP1 was done about 1 month ago along with the addition of a Samsung SSD.
My searches have not found any suggested solutions other than system restore or download a 'Registry Fix' which doesn't appeal to me at all.

Any help would be appreciated.
Rob.

BSODs on Commercial Surveillance System

Little context. My company had a Windows 7 based surveillance system that was crashing, we replaced it with a new server back in June, and now this is crashing as well.

Please see the bluescreenview capture picture. I'm really hoping to find the root cause before we go with another system.

I'm experiencing similar symptoms to a lot of other people, but no common fixes have worked. It started with removing the headphones disabled all sound, restored on restart, then one day it didn't come back. Then a month later, with a recent Windows Update it came back, for *one* day, and on restart it stopped working again. I've scoured the internet with no success. :ermm:

1) This is what the tray looks like:

2) I have checked Device Manager, uninstalled, reinstalled, updated, and rolled back all relevant drivers, from all the appropriate sources, including HPs website and IDTs official drivers, 100 times. This is the current status:

3) I followed the fix on another thread with no luck:

I don't know if the fact that I have my user profile designated to a drive other than C:, so other than that I don't know what else might be relevant.

4) I tried removing all recent updates, and having Windows install them again to see if it would re-trigger the random fix; it didn't.

I've spent hours on hours trying to solve the problem and I've run out of ideas. Someone please help.

Multiple Instances of SpeedFan on Startup

Hi guys,

Whenever I login, 2 instances of SpeedFan start up. I only need one. Is there any way to fix this please? I have tried reinstalling but there are still 2 instances. I've already checked that there are no shortcuts to SpeedFan in the user and appdata startup folders, and no Speedfan-related entries in both services.msc and msconfig. There is no setting within SpeedFan to "start with Windows" or similar.

Something somewhere must be telling SpeedFan to start twice. Have I missed anything? Please help!

Hi all,

The local network hardware in question:
CAT5E cabling
Netgear WNDR3700
Gigabyte Z77 (A) and MSI Z68 (B)
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 on both

I can upload from (A) to (B) and saturate 100% of my bandwidth (120+ MB/s). The other way round though, only ~60% of the bandwidth is used (~70MB/s). Test done using 15GB ISO and Windows copy.

Already ensured the following settings are same on both:

Energy Efficient Ethernet: Disabled
Jumbo Frame: 9Kb MTU
IPv6: Disabled
QoS: Disabled
Autotuning: Disabled
Speed & Duplex: 1Gbps Full Duplex
Large Send Offload: All Off

Can someone help me out here please?

Hotmail folders disappeared

I had many hotmail folders that I use for holding emails. Suddenly a lot of them have simply disappeared. They contained months of correspondence . . . some current with recent activity & others not so recent. Is there a way to recover them? I THINK they disappeared while I was in hotmail, but I'm not positive of that. I know they were there last night.

Secondary question . . . is there a way to backup hotmail folders?

Laptop turns off when plugging in for charging in normal mode on win7

Hello guys,

Since yesterday i'm facing a strange issue.. Whenever i plug in my laptop to charge, it just automatically turns off (not proper shutdown) within a few moments. This duration before power off varies at times. Its runs without any problem when on safe made. This problem happens only when win 7 is in normal mode. I noticed that the fan speed increases as i plug in. However, this also used to happen earlier. On searching online, some said it may be due to heating issue. But then how does it work normally in safe mode? Also, when i start in Diagnostic Start up mode, it starts perfectly. It does not start when i remove my battery and plug in..it powers off just after entering windows. This problem does not occur when in BIOS. Please help in finding a suitable solution.

Thank you.

Keyboard and mouse stop working at log-in screen.

Good morning from sunny Cambodia.

My keyboard and mouse work in BIOS but stop at the Windows 7 log-in screen.

This after I flushed my motherboard (ASUS). The flush finished successfully as far as I can tell.

Here is what I have tried:

Starting in safe mode; keyboard and mouse still stop at log-in.

Resetting CMOS.

Trying a system restore. That gave me an error that it could not access a file due to a virus scanner running. I don't know how to uninstall the virus scnner without keyboard and mouse.

Moving from USB 3 to USB 2 but it would appear all USB sockets go dead at log-in.

Changing the USB settings s in BIOS.

Reading every related post I could find on the internet.

I do have Windows 7 Professional installed on another HDD and that starts without problems so it is not a hardware malfunction. However, all my programs are under Windows 7 and I do not want to re-install everything.

I am all out of ideas now and any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Hanno

My mic keeps turning itself down and I have to manually turn it up again. It gets frustrating as I don't realize when it has turned itself down and NOONE can hear what im saying due its so low. Also this happens several times a day, its quite frequent. Whats weird it ALWAYS turns itself down to 24/100 (picture provided in the link below)

Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

User Account Functionality Lost After Update

$

Hi,

I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 on my HP desktop computer. Yesterday afternoon Windows installed about 16 "important" updates. When the machine re-started, I could not log into my user account. After entering the password the machine would stay for hours on the "Welcome" screen with a spinning circle and the HDD light flashing. Discovering (after a forced shut-down) that I could log into the other accounts, I finally ran System Restore from the Administrator account using the restore point created just before the Windows updates were installed. The restore operation took about 5 hours to complete! At the end there was a message that it completed successfully. I can now log into my user account, but it takes about 5 minutes to load and I cannot access a number of things such as Control Panel, Windows Explorer (my files), and the network troubleshooter. In the first two instances I get messages that Windows cannot access the necessary files and that I may not have sufficient permissions to do so. In the case of the network troubleshooter the message says that it encountered "a problem." Regarding the wireless network, the system tray icon has a red 'X' on it and says I am not connected. When I click on it, it shows the available wireless networks: at the top it says "Not connected" but the icon for my network says "Connected." I am in fact connected as I can access the Internet with Firefox.

Any suggestions on how to restore full access to my account? The only thing I can think of is to delete my account from the Administrator account with the option to save my files and then re-create my account and restore the files. But there are a lot (over 100GB) of files to move and I'm wondering if there is a more direct solution?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
