[SOLVED] Computer wakes itself from sleep repeatedly

Hello,

I want my Windows 7 PC to go to sleep during the night but it keeps waking up several times a night, sometimes just seconds after powering down. I also have it set to sleep after 30 minutes but according to my system log it has gone to sleep, woken up and gone back to sleep and woken up again in less than that time..

Like today for instance it went to sleep like 10:45 and then woke up again at 11:05, then it had another wake at 11:20. I did notice one pattern in the logs that sometimes there's almost exactly 30 minutes between wakes and a few times exactly 30 minutes down to the second. Mostly it seems random though.

The wake sources are unknown and I tried disabling the mouse and network from being allowed to wake the machine.

Attached log files from event viewer.

I'm stumped, does anyone have any ideas what could be going on here?

Laptop freezes all of a sudden

Hi All,

I am facing this strange issue with my laptop in recent times. All of a sudden, the laptop hangs(freeze) and make me to forcibly restart by pressing power button.

I havent done any OS update recently. Suddenly i started facing this issue.

After that i updated OS also. Still facing same issue.

I did Antivirus scanning (I am using Microsoft security essentials) and found nothing harming my computer.

Can anyone help to fix this issue.

Normal English Fonts Replaced by Symbols

Instead of normal English fonts appearing on my laptop screen, (what I can best describe as) "symbols" appear in their stead. I can get past the logon screen by clicking on my logon icon and typing in my password. Everything on my screen, from the desktop icon labels to the menus, are all in symbol form. When I click on them, most menu items do not respond; those that do, are unreadable anyway.

My computer is a Lenovo Y480 Ideapad, running Windows 7. I have not located a rescue disk and there are no backups. There are many important documents (and photos) on the hard disk and I'm not really looking to wipe out this data. If I could rescue the data and then do a system restore that would be OK. However, I can't seem to use any resident program, or one accessed from a cd/dvd or thumb-drive, since the program's text and/or the results appear as gibberish/symbols.

This computer has been gathering dust since the end of April and I'd appreciate any help that can help me get this computer back on-line.

Thanks.

I'm looking for information regarding a brand new install of windows 7. I was looking for them on Amazon and Ebay in hopes that I could find it cheaper than the $140 it is to but it straight from microsoft. However I do not want to get ripped off so I was a little weary about buy it off Ebay or Amazon.

Does anyone have any tips on what to look for to make sure I'm not getting ripped off or if I should just bite the bullet and pay the full price for it.

Thanks!:smile:

Where do these null-terminated registry keys come from?

0
My computer has accumulated a bunch of registry keys with null characters at the end of them:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\{03223D4D-1B28-4325-9A96-9C5A4C8EA8BC}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\{11D741B8-DD31-4707-B06A-7A68E3D84884}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\{1A493EAC-93D3-4646-B911-4697A475FF4B}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\{20EF7B60-CE85-4048-A409-02CB203268EE}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\{242E582C-66A8-478C-8BCA-0AF9F1D38D39}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\{29638F0C-042B-4B50-A2D2-8E8E7CA71E4F}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\{3B84C2D7-708C-48EF-8ED7-0C5FC0F030C6}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\{3B8C523D-E999-4C87-BB58-E03B7F5C67F8}

and so on. Each key has a null character after the }.

I have no reason to suspect malware -- rather, I think they were installed by a legitimate application. However, because of the null characters in these keys, there is another application (namely the Python package installer) that won't run. My understanding is that null characters are not supposed to appear in registry keys--and, in fact, regedit won't let me display any information about these keys.

I suspect I could just download regdelnull from Microsoft and delete these keys. However, before doing so, I would like to figure out who might have put them there and why. Alternatively, I could just wait for the next version of Python, which I think has been patched to accept registry keys with null characters. Still, I'm curious as to what's going on here.

Windows Updates

Hello, I am told in the Action Centre that I am up to date with Windows Updates. On checking in hidden Icons I find an icon that informs me that Windows is downloading updates (34% complete) See attachment.

If this is Windows 10 I haven,t yet made up my mind. If not how do I stop it? Is it malware?

Cheers, Herefordian

Search folder

I just discovered a folder by the name of Searches. It contains 3 sub-folders: Everywhere, Indexed Locations, and Microsoft OneNote. The first 2 contain a HUGE number of files, and the same files are in each. The OneNote folder is empty.

From the title of the folder, I guess this is all the searches I've ever run on this machine using Windows search. Why do the first 2 subfolders contain the same files, and why does Windows retain these files? I'd like to delete them. Will that upset Windows?

Arrow Left key bugging

Hi,

One of our home computers is having a trouble with it's input: it keeps pressing the arrow left button. Whenever something is selected (i.e. an icon on the desktop) the selection keeps moving to the left. Also when entering a typing area, typing becomes unpossible because it becomes like writing from right to left! :(

At first we thought the keyboard was bugged (since the led's were bliking weird) so we bought a new keyboard. But upon restarting the computer the problem still presisted. At this moment I'm clueless, what should I do now?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

How to get an external keyboard for boot up?

I have an HP Windows 7 laptop that's rather worn down but I can't afford a new one. The keyboard stopped working and I need to press Enter for my computer to start (I get a message about the fan that I need to press Enter to bypass or it shuts down in 15 seconds). Does anyone know how I can get on my computer, or of an external keyboard I could purchase that doesn't need to be installed? Would REALLY appreciate any help! Thanks!

Computer won't shut down

Like it says in the title, my laptop won't shut down. Not even when I do a force/hard shut down.

When I do try to shut down or restart through the Start menu, nothing happens. When I hold the power button, it hibernates instead of shutting down.
Any idea what's going on?

Additional details:
- When I press ctrl+alt+delete, nothing happens. Same with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. The only way I've found to open Task Manager is through right clicking on the task bar.
- I've recently forced Skype to shut down while trying to shut down Windows; it said that Skype was preventing it from shutting down. (And no, it is not open again)

lDownloading Windows disks

First if this is in the wrong forum please move it to the appropriate forum.

Just wondered if anyone is familiar with this website and if it is legitimate?

https://ez93.com/

The motherboard in my HP failed so I ordered one from EBay as HP no longer has that board available however the seller substituted a different "model" of board. The actual board is the same (MS7613) but HP's tag is different and after contacting HP they advised it would have a different BIOS and may or may not have issues and the OS may recognize the difference and no longer function. I ordered one from another seller which was new and sealed in a factory bag and HP box and when I received it and installed it, it came up with an error when trying to boot. I tried using my HP recovery disk and it said it was not meant for this computer or something similar so need to find a reliable source to download Windows 7. Microsoft advises that if I have a valid COA, which I do, it is not a problem copyright wise.

Thank you

[SOLVED] Windows 7 Update "Installing" forever At Startup

Windows 7 Home Premium

I have run Windows Update and selected an update to install. It errors. However, when I shut down or restart, I get a blue screen with a message
"Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing Update 1 of 1" and nothing happens.

Is there a way I can identify the particular update being run and have it ignored at next shutdown/startup?

Can this be done in Safe Mode with Networking?
