Hello all,
I have a neighbor's Dell Inspiron 531 desktop computer with a bootup failure.
When powered, it displays the BIOS screen allowing access to the setup screens as well as the boot device option. In addition, pressing the F8 key does allow access to the expanded options including Safe Mode and the Repair options.

The System:
Dell Inspiron 531
Windows Vista Home Premium OS
AMD Dual-core processor
1 GB of DDR2 RAM
Single SATA hard drive
Single SATA DVD R/RW drive

When booted in Normal mode, the Windows Vista scrolling bars are displayed briefly before the screen goes black with a white arrow pointer. The arrow pointer freely moves about the desktop when directed with the mouse. However, black screen remains until the time limit is reached for the screen-saver to start. At this point, the Windows Vista logo displays and the default screensaver application starts.
The same result is obtained when booting under Safe Mode.

I have tried other options via the F8 screen (results were the same)
Last known good configuration
Lower video resolution

Using the Repair Windows function I was able to bring up the various options.
Tried a startup repair and indicated everything was fine.
Tried to restore the computer to an earlier time and was told there were no restoration points to reference.
I tried Command Prompt and found that I was able to move about the directory tree of the C: drive

In addition, I have tried booting the system from Linux live media and have found that even though the machine is equipped with a DVD drive, only iso files burned to CDs will function with this computer. Live DVDs do not seem to be readable.

I do not have the original installation discs for the machine nor any repair discs.

Wondering if anyone has any ideas of what options to try short of wiping the HD and re-installing another OS.

Thanks!

Having some .net framework issues.

I use a tool called Curse Client for one of my games and it has been broken for some time. I get an unrecoverable error and it says it can be a corrupted .Net or Curse Client install. I've done the steps to attempt to correct this but make no progress on it.

I then try to install .Net 4.0 and get this error

Final Result: Installation failed with error code: (0x80070643), "Fatal error during installation. " (Elapsed time: 0 00:01:07).

I also get this log that goes with it .

Pale Moon is my default browser. Can you tell me which version of Shockwave Flash plug-in I should be using? There are two versions listed in my Plug-ins Manager: 18.0.0.232. and 13.0.0.309 (which I understand to be the ESR version). Both are activated. Do I need both? If not, which shall I delete?
Thanks

System Reserved as C

Good afternoon,

I've fixed a harddrive which lost its partition table and when I tried to run chkdsk from Windows Installer repair console I saw that C: was System Reserved and actual C: was now F:, what should I do to fix this?

Just for you to know, D: and E: are the other partitions I have and they are using correct letters, it's just the C: that moved somehow.

Details about what I did to fix partition table is in this thread: http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...e-1022530.html

Thanks in advance!

Is there a good free backup program?

I always really liked the Backup program included with Windows until Windows 7 (I never had Vista but I guess it had the same). I've been using Windows Backup since I have Windows 7 but a few things bother me, for example I don't like how you need to go through the entire backup configuration again each time you want to switch backup disks and that after going through all that it forces a backup to start even though I don't want to start a backup right away as I need to delete the old backup from that media first.

Are there any free backup programs that can backup open files (I always leave MS Outlook running so I need a program that can backup my email database even when it's opened). I also need it to support backup schedules and allow for easy switching of one backup media to the other. Ideally but not necessary, I'd like it to be able to restore the entire OS from a restore disk without having to install Windows first.

I realize this is asking a lot for a free program, if none are available what's the lowest cost one that does that I want?

Thanks

Computer has insomnia

What is going on? When I used to put my computer to sleep it stayed that way. A few months back I noticed it would be on in the morning. I thought it was a fluke. Now if I put it on sleep it goes back on but there's no rhyme or reason as to when, sometimes it goes on 3 hours after being put on sleep and other times 10 minutes after being put to sleep.

I've tried everything here:

Haven't done this one yet, not sure?? Don't want to screw up.

Today I tried to go to Facebook, and I got the message that the site doesn't work without java, so I reinstalled java to the latest. I also uninstalled an old version of shockwave flash (it was an addon) I still can't sign into facebook, even after enabling both of them (I get the same message) also video's on youtube will not play (but will in IE)

I tried this- no difference

Right now for my add:on's in firefox the only one with an exclamation point is java deployment toolkit 8.0.510.16 , but I don't know where (I've searched) to get an updated version of this, it says there vulnerabilities.

Computer not displaying on monitors?

I ran Avast on my primary computer and it asked me to do a boot-up scan(?) which I haven't really seen until then, so I figured I would run it. Afterwards my computer shut down and when it restarted my monitor stayed black as if nothing was running on it and eventually powered off.

I've tried using multiple monitors (including my tv) as well as multiple hdmi cables and haven't found a solution. :banghead:

I'm rather confused as to what is even wrong or if anything is wrong, but I have a feeling something is. I've been using my laptop since and I can't play as many pc games on here so it's rather annoying I can't play with my friends as much.

It's an Alienware running Windows 7, though I don't know much more about it(will look further into specs).

Any help would be appreciated as I am lost for what I should do.

Booting taking over 20 minutes

Working on an older HP G42 Notebook PC with Windows 7 Home Premium. The machine is taking over 20 minutes to boot up. It is sitting on the black HP screen long before it ever gets to the "Starting Windows" screen. I have tried reinstalling windows from the recovery partition. I have tried starting in safe mode. I have tried shutting off all non windows services and the machine always takes 20 minutes or more to boot. Is there something I can do to get this computer to boot up faster? Once it finally boots up it appears to work correctly. The only other thing I know is wrong with it is the battery appears to be totally shot because if it is not plugged in the machines powers down immediately.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Error opening files

Hello, I've been struggling for half a year with this. It gives me the error when I try to run games like Shadow of Mordor, Hitman Absolution or GTA5. I have tried updating and installing the visual studio and other software with aio, even manually replacing the dlls (xinput and mfc100 ones). Still no progress. I arrived at this error after the game was asking me for a list of other dlls that I manually downloaded (picture)Attachment 249489

Dependency gave me a diagnosis of the dll problem, I think, but I don't know what to do next. I appreciate any help :)

Windows Explorer won't display MS office icons

0

I've tried deleting the IconCache.db, changing the default program to open files to Wordpad and back again, sfc /scannow, reinstalling MS Office 2010, I downloaded and ran Rebuild_Icon_Cache.bat (as per sevenforums.com). Nothing has worked. Don't ask me to go back to a restore point because they've been this way for weeks and weeks.

The CorelDraw X4 files had this problem and it was only corrected by upgrading to CorelDraw X7.

The PDFs also had this problem but I finally got that straightened out by making Reader the default opening program as opposed to Acrobat.

The preview pane does work now. Don't really know what corrected that problem. Desktop and Task Bar icons are fine. I've been limping along but it's getting annoying when I'm trying to find certain Word or Excel files.

I will attach a screen shot.

Is there any cure besides opening each and every file, type something, undo it and resave the file? Ugh.

Thanks in advance,
Lisa

Uninstalled unwanted programs from control panel and now can't connect to internet

First of all, thank you to anyone who can and will help me out!

Now, a few days ago I was cleaning up my HP laptop as it had been running a bit slow lately. I was deleting old files and etc, and then I went in under control panel to uninstall a few unwanted programs that i didn't need, such as games etc.

However, now it would appear that I deleted something I should not have, since my computer fails to connect to the internet.

I know, I know, I shouldn't have uninstalled it if I wasn't 1000% sure what it was and what it does and if its needed :banghead:

When i restart the computer, it works for a little but then it stops working again. There is nothing wrong with my internet as i can connect on all other devices.

When i ran troubleshooter, it said there was something wrong with the "leaf networks adapter" that it couldn't fix.

I also ran sfc /scannnow in Command Prompt and it said it wasn't able to fix everything either.

Please help!

Vista and problems with USB ports

0

I've been having issues with USB devices recently.

Basically they'll sometimes stop being recognized at random times while Windows is running, sometimes (a lot of the time now actually) they won't be recognized at all when starting Windows and I'll have to keep restarting until I get lucky and my mouse and keyboard activate, not to mention luxuries like controllers and whatnot.

At first I thought this was a hardware issue with my motherboard or something but I'm very sure this isn't the case anymore. When in BIOS, the USB keyboard always works and the mouse is always lit up. It's only when Windows begins loading that they'll deactivate. Even more damning for Windows, sometimes the peripherals will reactivate just as I restart/shut down the computer. It's like as soon as whatever service or process there is causing the problem is terminated, they start working again.

I've also gotten BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER BSOD error twice. A few minutes ago when restarting Windows after installing updates, and the other time a few days ago I can't exactly remember the circumstances.

Things I've tried:
  • Checking to make sure "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked in the USB Root Hub in Device Manager (I have two USB Root Hub entries, I don't know if this is relevant).
  • Making sure "USB selective suspend" is disabled in the power options.
  • Uninstalling some Smart Technology something or other from Mad Catz/Saitek, I assumed since its some peripheral driver it might be causing the problem.
  • Enabled USB Keyboard and USB Mouse in BIOS.
  • Tried to update USB and mouse drivers using Windows' interface in the properties in Device Manager. It never does anything and just says it's searching for updates forever.

Some things that might be relevant:
  • When the mouse and/or keyboard stop working, they still have entries in the device manager (when they're working, there's two). With the remaining ones (the ones that show even when the mouse/kb aren't working), in the device manager, properties, under details, and then Hardware IDs, they both show HID\SaitekMouse and HID\SaitekKeyboard respectively. I could be entirely wrong, but this seems like it might be a clue. I don't own any Saitek keyboards or mice, only a HOTAS flight stick.
  • I have an external hard drive that uses USB, and it's never ever under any circumstances stopped being recognized by Windows. It's always worked. Makes me think this is some how specific to control peripherals.
  • My mouse isn't dying. I tried with another mouse and it has the same problem.
  • When I thought it was related to my motherboard, I thought a USB hub might help. I'm still using it anyway, but the mouse still keeps cutting out. The interesting thing is that the keyboard and USB controller ("Buffalo Classic USB Gamepad" if that matters) keep working fine. The whole thing has never shut off, though sometimes nothing will work when restarting windows.
  • This issue seems to have started a few weeks ago when my graphics card died (GTX 460) and had to reinstall my old one (GTX 260). It wasn't a big deal, all I did was switch them and then reinstall the Nvidia drivers. I can't say it's directly related but they happened to coincide.
  • I have a 1,000w PSU so I don't suppose it's a power issue.

I suppose if it comes to it, I can just reinstall Windows, but I'd like to avoid that if it it's possible, especially when I have a hunch that this is a Windows hotfix or a program uninstall away from being fixed.

My specs:

Vista Home Basic SP2
AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 2.8 Ghz
3gb DDR2
GTX 260 Core 216
Nvidia 590 sli motherboard

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I'll appreciate any help you can offer.

What gets reset when Vista restarts? (RE: Networking)

Hello,

Recently I have encountered a problem in which all my internet browsers are suddenly rendered useless at seemingly random intervals (every few days to every few weeks). My network connection remains intact, as, apparently, does my internet connection. However, my browsers (Firefox, Chrome, IE) give "page cannot be displayed" or "failed to establish network connection" errors when I attempt to access any HTTP/HTTPS site (including my router admin page which, of course, does not even require an internet connection to access) - and I continue to get these errors until I reboot my laptop.

I've yet to find the cause of this problem (nor has anyone else I've talked to), so I've just learned to live with it for now, knowing I can always fix it (albeit temporarily...and annoyingly) with a reboot. However, I would much prefer a quicker fix if possible - something I could do from Windows in a few seconds, rather than waiting for a full restart of my computer. Below is a list of what I've tried so far without success:

restarting all my browsers
refreshing the network connection
rebooting the modem
rebooting the router
resetting the network adapter
flushing the DNS cache
stopping/restarting WinHTTP
stopping/restarting Windows Explorer
release/renewing "ipconfig"
release/renewing "nbtstat"

Still, only a full laptop reboot will get my browsers working again. My question, then, is WHY? What other network/internet/browser-type things normally get reset when your computer gets restarted?

For the record I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic 32bit, SP1, on the laptop in question.

Thanks in advance for any help!
