How do you convert xp to windows 7?

0
0
I found an install disk in my school's computer lab and would like to upgrade the xp's in there to windows 7. I know that the computers themselves need to be compatible for 7, but it seems like they are when I look at the specs. What happens now when I run the disk? Will it take a long time? Will it wipe out software already installed? Please help.

Hey guys,

One of my Pc's are running Windows Vista Business that I've upgraded from XP. It used to run alright with Xp but since I've upgraded to Vista the Pc has become really slow and laggy. I can be just browsing 4 tabs on Firefox and my CPU usage can be as high as 100% :(

Here are the specs:

2GB RAM
380 GB HDD
Intel Celeron D 3.20 GHZ
Integrated Video card

Was wondering is there anything i could further upgrade to save $$ on purchasing a new PC right now ? i Don't think i could upgrade the RAM any further as far as i can remember.

Video driver not letting me start up in normal mode

I have a AMD Radeon HD 6800 series video driver. I can startup Windows in safe mode, but not in normal mode. There is nothing after the black screen with Windows is starting. If I disable the video driver, I can start up in normal mode.

There seems to be rows of black dots during the BIOS screens. Also, the graphics seem distorted in both safe mode and normal mode when the video driver has been disabled.

My question is this a hardware problem or a software problem? Are there any solutions to startup in normal mode with the video driver enabled? I will most likely reformat if there are no other options.

I have already tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it but that did not work. How do I know if the video driver is not working properly, but is still being recognised by Windows?

A required privilage is not held by the client error! Please help!

HP Laptop problems

My HP g6 series i3 laptop (upon which I am typing) has been very poorly for some weeks.

The main problem is that I cannot install many programs. For instance if I try to install an updated version of the (excellent!) audio program Reaper, I get the error message "Cannot Initialize Plugins Directory". I tried to install a tool called "Unlocker" but got the same error.
Earlier today my internet was not working "Not connected to a Network" I tried Troubleshooter and, for the first time ever THAT threw up an error and would not work.

I have cleaned out temp files, run sfc /scannow all to no avail. To add to my pain the DVD drive only works as an when it wants to! I can run the new, paid for kosher Win7/64 Home P disc to to an install but not boot from it to run Repair. I have put the W7 disc on a USB stick but that won't boot into an repair mode either.
I am fairly well used to running Repair for XP but don't really know how it goes for Win 7!

I am prepared to do a full format and install if that is the last resort but I would rather not.

Cheers all,

Dave.

Win7 media server hangs

Good afternoon. I recently started encountering a problem and can't figure out the root cause. I have a desktop PC (home built) running Win7. I use it to stream media files via a powerline network (Telnet) and Netgear 6100 to my media streamer (Patriot Box Office). A couple of weeks ago the video froze. The network speed went from 2.3MB to 300k. I went in the office and the PC was frozen and would not respond (black screen). I was forced to hard power off the system and hard restart. I believe the problem is on the PC. I don't know if this is HDD, MotherBd, or graphics card issue. If you need a list of the hardware, let me know. I was thinking of running a perfmon while streaming to see if I could capture the problem, but, don't know what items to monitor. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Cannot install program in Vista

For the record, I run Windows 7. I ran XP long past Vista, 7 AND 8, before one day a disk failed and when I restarted, I got my first Home Edition of any OS, in this case Windows 7. I have never in 25+ years encountered the problem I'm about to describe, which WAS on Vista.

I went to my neighbour to help him with downloading and installing a basic freeware program. Very straightforward. But I had never before worked within Vista. I downloaded the executable, double clicked it, the little circle worked away as if it was working, and then nothing.

This was strange. My friend knew absolutely nothing. A computer shop could not fix his computer, so they gave him this second hand job with Vista. The computer seems to run fine. The shop engineer installed a freeware program for him and a trial of a priced program for him. Everything seems to run fine.

He DOES have administrator rights. I saw in the context menu that there was a choice to "run program as administrator" (or something very close to that - I'm not sitting at his computer now). Nothing. I checked security settings. I turned off, temporarily, user restriction settings (though there are no other users).

I found a help instruction to "run" an .msc program - I'm sorry, I don't remember it's filename now - but that produced an error. Apparently it was not installed, whatever it was (sorry to be so unhelpful). I found in help an assistant to go a step at a time for me, that produced an error.

I thought, ok, maybe there's a problem with the file. So I went to youtube, found a link for "Ummy" youtube download freeware and downloaded that - I had done the same on my machine only the night before and it installed and then ran like a charm.

Same problem.

I'm at my wit's end. The only additional information that I can supply is that Avast anti-virus is installed. (And now I'm thinking... well, you can guess, but I didn't think of that earlier, while at his house. Maybe someone knows what problems Avast could cause.)

I'm posting this in the hope that there might be something very simple I'm overlooking, peculiar to Vista or to Avast, that would solve my problem. (I'll test turning off Avast tomorrow.)

If anyone recognizes this problem, any insights would be most helpful. Thank you in advance.

Software Download That I Don't Want to Install

Hello everyone,

For the past month, I keep getting a box in the lower right portion of my screen that states that I have a "software download complete" (grey box about 3" x 1/2"). I have two choices (Install Now / Install Later). I have no idea what it is, because I did not ask for it. I keep clicking on the Install Later, but within 30 minutes, it pops up again.

I have looked at my Downloads, but I don't see anything that looks strange. Is there any way to either check to see what it is, or just delete it so that it doesn't pop up again?

I have an HP Windows 7 System.

Any help would be appreciated.

Michael

22 windows 7 updates keep failing to install

Pre-built 64-bit, windows 7 Professional O.S.
Intel Core 2 quad CPU, Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz 2.39 GHz
4 GB Ram

22 windows 7 updates keep failing to install, have tried multiple times, have tried downloading each update manually and using the manual installation way. It appeared to be a .NET issue at one point in my research, so I uninstalled the updates and re-installed but still the same 2 .NET 3.5.1 updates will not update. As well 6 regular windows updates, 13 Security updates and 1 security update for IE 11.

Thanks

Cant login to cached profile/account

Hello Everyone.

Im currently having a problem with a freshly installed laptop at our office, or rather outside our office. Its running Win 7 Pro. The problem is that the user can login to the computer without a problem at the office, using cable or wifi, once outside the office it gets the error "there are no logon servers available" and it fails to logon to the cached profile.

At first i didnt test this, i didnt turn off Wifi or unplug the network cable after i installed the computer for him, i just tought that it would work since i havent had this problem with other laptops on the site, so the user was rather pissed when he noticed that he couldnt log on to the computer when he was at home.

In order to solve the issue, i unjoined the computer from the domain, let it join a workgroup instead. I then renamed the computer and then let it join the AD domain again and it created a new workstation object.

I then restarted the computer 10 times, every other restart i logged in with network enabled, wifi and cable, and every other restart i logged in with the cached account with wifi disabled thru the physical wifi switch, and no network cable attached. And it worked without a problem.

So i tought i had fixed the problem by removing/unjoining the computer from the domain, and then rejoining the computer to the domain using a fresh new computer name and by that creating a new computer object in AD. Doing 10 restarts and doing 10 logins with and without network i was sure i had eliminated the problem.

But then i get a call from the User, telling me that it suddenly has stopped working again... From what i have seen on the internet is that theres plenty of people with the same problem out there, but no real solution to the problem. Atleast that works for me.

I have tried to increase the cached login count from 10 to 50 in the registry. I have unjoined the computer from the domain and let it rejoin (wich solved the problem temporarily). The end user logs into the right domain using domain\username.

I have no idea how to proceed, and the end user is getting irritated as ****.

I have a domane name registered with hosts.co.uk which gives me a free email facility, however it only allows me to receive mail.
I also have a Gmail account so In outlook I set the incomming mail server to pop3.hosts.co.uk and the outgoing mail server to smtp.gmail.com.
When a recipient gets mail from me, they see my Gmail address in the from field. I would like it to show my domain email address. Is this possible?
Thanks in advance for any help.

mysterious speedometer icons on desktop

All of a sudden there is a strange icon that has appeared superimposed on many of the icons on my desktop. It is a big grey circle with a needle on that is poised near a "red line" area and looks sort of like a speedometer or a tachometer. I have never seen it before and have no idea where it is coming from. Any suggestions on how to remove them?

WMP: "album art cannot be changed when a song from the album is in use"

I added an album to my library in Windows Media Player.

For some reason the album art resolution got gimped.

I tried to drag the album art to the album, but it keeps saying "album art cannot be changed when a song from the album is in use"

The album is not in use. How do I fix this? I deleted it from the library and re-added, but got the same problem.

Windows Media Player

Is there a simple-to-use CD player that will play CDs on my computer without all the headaches caused by Windows Media Player and iTunes media player? I can play wav files that are on my computer but I can't play music from a CD. Windows Media Player shows all the tracks on the CD but clicking on Play does nothing. My computer is using Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. I can't tell you what version of Windows Media Player I'm using because I can't find that information.

(The older versions of WMP were easier to use and didn't create these problems.)

Cannot install some programs in Vista

Hi everyone:

I was forced to do a reinstall using recovery discs for my Asus laptop today, and it’s gone reasonably well (with a couple of issues that I’ll note in other threads). However, like the user in this earlier thread (http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ta-214275.html) I can’t get some programs to install.

It’s not all exe files, just two. The first was Ccleaner, although I managed to find an older version of an external hard drive and used that. But the latest Ccleaner simply will not install, regardless of where it was saved.

The second is VLC, and an older version won’t cut the mustard in this case.

However, I have installed exes before and since downloading Ccleaner and VLC Media Player, and they’ve worked fine.

In other words, unlike some people who have written on forums, I don’t have a blanket problem with exes. Just the latest VLC.

When the first VLC attempt was made, a Windows Update was happening. Would this have somehow messed up all future attempts to install VLC?

The earlier user said they had not extracted the files properly, but that’s not something I know how to check with VLC.

Any advice would be welcome.

Issue with Arial font

For some reason, something is wrong with my Arial font. When I went to Character Map, a lot of the special characters do not display properly. I went to European Union Expansion Font Update, downloaded it, then installed it, but the problem persisted. I deleted the Arial font and tried running the download again, but I'm still having problems.
I had a problem a few months earlier, in which my Arial font spontaneously disappeared from my computer and I had to install it again with that same font update. Does anyone know why Arial keeps messing up, and how I can fix it again?
