Slow(ish) StartUp?

$

I like this notebook (Gateway NV7921u) and am not in a position to replace it any time soon. It does everything I need well and works fine once running. But it seems like it's taking longer to get to the Desktop in recent months.

To be fair, it is loading quite a bit - various utilities and programs, including things like a quick start for Open Office, Speccy, NetWorx, etc. But those all start after Windows starts.

The 'slow' part seems to be getting to the point where Windows starts. It can be a couple of minutes after pushing the Power button before the Desktop even begins to load.

I've heard of programs like StartUp Cop where you can set the order in which programs begin to load, but I'm not sure that would help.

Suggestions on what to look for or tweak?

80072f8f Windows Update Error

Hello TSF, I have tried my darndest and looked at quite a few of the previous posts on this error trying to fix it but I can't seem to find a resolution.

I am aware that this error is caused during the certification process where my computer is communicating a different time than the update server. I checked my settings and I am able to synchronize with time.windows.com.

I then ran SFC scan to determine if anything was missing, no avail. It did not find any "integrity violations" (see attached). I am kind of at a loss here now and don't really know how to proceed.

Inability fo fully install Windows 7 on SSD

I have 2 computers one 7 years old the other new. On my new computer with an Asus Z97-K motherboard I installed a 1TB hard drive. I then used a 7-year-old purchased copy of Windows 7 Home Edition to install windows 7 in a basic form. This I activated and then installed Windows 10 over it. All went well and I now have a fast system. I was then given a 120G SSD and decided to take out my hard drive and put it aside for safety. I then installed the SSD which was recognised by the BIOS and again went through the procedure for installing Windows 7 on it. Windows 7 loaded all of its files. I entered the Language and clicked Install. Windows 7 expanded and loaded all of its files to the SSD. It then said it would reboot several times to finish the installation. This it would not do. I got messages about the hardware may not support the installation. I reformatted the drive to NTFS with all the space as a single primary partition, made it active and tried again with the same result. My old computer recognised the drive but trying to install Windows 7 yielded the message. Can only be installed on a hard drive. Does this mean my purchased original copy of Windows 7 will never work with a SSD? If this is the case what versions of Windows 7 will? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I tried deleting it but it also crashed. It even crashes file shredder, malwarebytes, or any other program that I use to try and delete it, as soon as the file is selected the program freezes and won't work even if I end the process, I have to restart the PC.
Currently running windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit fully updated.
If someone can help me I'd appreciate it very much.

Cannot run Install Files -- Clicking does nothing

Hey folks,

Not a pro here by any means so hopefully you all can help me out a bit, lol.

I went into msconfig and was messing with my startup programs and services to try and get rid of a lot of the junk that opens when I boot my computer. At some point, somehow, it appears that I disabled Windows Installer.

I've since gone back into services.msc and was able to enable Windows Installer again and it shows that it is currently enabled.

Still, I cannot install files from an installer. I can run .exe files just fine so long as they are not install files.

Whenever I click on an install file, I get an hour glass for about 1 second and then nothing happens.

I'm assuming this may be some type of registry error but I'm not positive. I downloaded the Windows Fix program for Installing/Uninstalling programs and it said it could not find any problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

(this was done months ago and I've been putting off fixing the problem, so a restore is probably not likely)

Can't get online. Help!samsung np520u4c network drivers

I just loaded windows 7 Ultimate on my samsung np520u4c, and I can't get online. The only thing I can find is samsungs auto update software, which requires you to be online, which I can't from that computer. Is there any way to somehow get the network adapter drivers some other way?? I've googled, and searched, and I can't believe that I'm the only one that has ever had this problem. I should have written down the make and model of the adapters before I installed the W7 OS, but I didn't think that it would be so difficult to find individual drivers for this machine. I can't even plug directly into my router and get online..

Donated pc - licence questions

$

Hi guys :smile:

My friendly IT colleague at work donated a Dell desktop pc to me the other week. The spec of this new (to me) machine is far superior to the pc I currently run so I was happy to accept it :thumb:

The HDD was too small for my needs so I purchased a new drive.

There is a licencing sticker attached to the machine showing the activation code and the Windows version - Windows 7 Pro OA.

In my head I thought I could install a new and larger hdd, install Windows 7 Pro then upgrade to Windows 10. I recently read somewhere on the net that Microsoft plan to allow Windows 10 activation via genuine activation codes so happy days.

How wrong was I????

After reading so many articles on the net I am now more confused than ever :confused::sad:. Some articles say I have to purchase a new licence, some sites provide links to Digital river websites, others state that Microsoft no longer support this method of distribution, others state that I should contact Dell directly, others say contact Windows, others state under no circumstance should I contact Windows......... WOW :banghead:

Like I say, given my limited knowledge, I am of the understanding that I am doing nothing illegal and given that the only hardware that has changed is the hdd I should still be able to use the machine. (What would happen if the original hdd had simply failed I wonder? :confused:)

Can anyone give me layman instructions :uhoh: on what I should try/do next please?

I apologise if this has been posted previously but given the information overload thought it best to start fresh.

Thanks a million in advance

Hello TSF,

Recently my three year old SSD (which has 19GB of free space on it) after a random amount of time after booting up I get the prompt saying im running out of space on my C drive and surely when i check there is 0 out of 128gb free. If i proceed to reboot it goes away for a while.

After checking treesize this space is literally not going anywhere... I have run full anti virus and malware scans.

Could it be that my SSD is on its way out?

Thanks,
Kris

Hello. :smile:

I am too embarrassed to phone customer services again, they build the pc for me (without OS), I installed W7 pro 64x. All good, AMD A Series 6600K, AMD Radeon 8570D Integrated Graphics.

And exactly these graphics drivers are shrouded in a cloud to me online. (I'm looking and looking)

I asked for the motherboard disk (there wasn't one) and he (customer service) kindly send me the link to

GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket FM2+ - GA-F2A78M-HD2 (rev. 3.0)

As you can see, no graphics. Now I am stumped.

Can you help find these drivers please??:blush:

Many regards. :wavey:

"Disconnect" after 20 minutes.

Hello, and thanks for your help in advance.

Ive come upon an issue with my laptop connection at my girlfriends house. I seem to loose connection about every 20 min or so. This only occurs at her house, and on my laptop. I do not know how to research the specifics of the issue because I dont know anything about networking.

The issue is most noticeable while playing games, as I loose connection to the game server, and get booted. Less so when just surfing the internet, as I wont notice a problem until I attempt to load a new page or video.

I run the troubleshooter, but it says that I am connected, and no problems found. When I try to connect to a specific website via the troubleshooter, it says "Your system appears to be configured correctly. The website or device your connecting to may not be available. Contact you ISP... etc.."

I solve the problem by restarting, or manually disconnecting from the network, and reconnecting. I have restarted all components of the network. Modem, router, all devices connected to the network (iPhones, iPads, and consoles) and the issue returns.

Im not the most tech savy, and would love some help describing this problem in better detail, to attempt a fix. Thanks again for any support.

Font issues for Google and Wikipedia

Hi,

Turned on the PC today, Googled something and had a surprise. The fonts look awful and bold. Same thing on Wikipedia. It's not a browser issue since same thing happens in IE and Firefox: http://oi60.tinypic.com/2yzlx04.jpg

This is the CSS that pertains to the font in Google:

Code:

#_eEe {
    display: inline-block;
    line-height: 28px;
}
#als {
    font-size: small;
}
body, html {
    font-size: small;
}
body {
    color: #222;
}
body, td, a, p, .h {
    font-family: arial,sans-serif;

What could be the issue?

PS: It's not zoomed in/out.

Computer turns on automatically, beeps then shuts down

I am having a problem and I am not sure sure how to solve it. As stated in the title, the computer turns on automatically, beeps then shuts down. I have tried clearing the CMOS through the jumper way, but that does not seem to work. I am going to get a new lithium battery to replace the CMOS the battery way, but I am not confident that will work.

I am not sure if it's an overheating problem as the computer has been turned off for hours and still shuts down automatically after the beep. I have tried unplugging everything like keyboard, mouse, etc. except the power cable but I am still having the same problem.

I have tried using an old PSU but I am not sure if I am connecting everything correctly with that one as it has different cables to my current one.

The computer boots up automatically after I switch on the power switch at the back of the computer, beeps then instantly shuts down. If I leave the power switch on, it repeats the boot up, then beep, then shut down problem every few minutes.
