[SOLVED] Win7 Pro shut down on idle

$

OS is Win7 Pro 32bit. System is located behind firewall with no internet access.
I am running into a strange problem which started last Monday. When the system is idle, it shut down after a period of time. Because it is configure to start auto w/o password, so it restarts again (& shut down again). I schedule big batch jobs running and so none of these batch jobs can be completed.
In Power Configuration, I have set the setting to High Performance with the following config.
Hard Disk:
Turn off hard disk after: Setting 300000 minutes

Sleep:
Sleep after: Setting: Never
Hibernate after: Setting: Never
Allow wake timers: Setting: Enable

Power buttons and lid
Sleep button action: Setting: Do nothing

Multimedia Settings
When sharing media: Setting: Prevent idling to sleep

I see nothing wrong with the above configuration. Can someone spot what I have missed.

The computer is not hot and is in an air conditioned room. So removing the overheating cpu issue.

In Event View, I saw no critical error. In log, I saw this event log:
1/ A device or program has requested attention. Device or application: C:\Windows\system32\CMD.EXE. Message title: C:\Windows\system32\CMD.EXE.

2/ The Desktop Window Manager has exited with code (0x40010004)

3/ The Shell Hardware Detection service entered the stopped state. Service 'WMPNetworkSvc' stopped.

4/ SessionName Circular Kernel Context Logger. ErrorCode 3221225525

From hours of googling, I have seen report that 4/ above is harmless & can be ignored.

The only thing I haven't done is to poke into the bios. But I can't do it as I can only remote access this computer via vpn.

Thanks in advance.

PC Freeze

My PC freezes after a minute of logging in and I don't know why. It's happened to me before but it was fixed by keeping it turned off overnight. This time, however that didn't work.

However, I've discovered that being in safe mode doesn't trigger the freeze. Any way to solve this?

I have a client and out of 40 computers in the last couple days 4 of them are getting stuck installing updates. Couple dell and Lenovo. 3 different models. They all have win 7 64bit.
The updates download. But get stuck installing then when I try to reboot it hangs there installing also. I have left a couple for more than 24 hours and stays there. One is stuck reverting changes. Is anyone else having this problem. Thinking maybe Microsoft releases some bad updates.

Thanks all

[SOLVED] Weird changes after Windows Update

I turned off my laptop last night, no problem. I turned it on this afternoon, and a few things I noticed right away:

1. My desktop background had been changed back to the Windows icon (I had a personal photo as my background).

2. Program shortcuts that I didn't have on my desktop before were now on my desktop (e.g., I had the programs before, just not the shortcuts on my desktop).

3. Programs that were pinned to my Start menu were no longer there, although I still have the programs.

4. My Outlook email had been wiped clean -- my accounts were gone, and so were my emails. I had to setup my email accounts all over again, and one of them refused to be set up with an encrypted connection. It's currently set up with an unencrypted connection. I thought the problem might be with my email, but I can sign into the web version of the account. I also checked with my ISP, but my internet connection is fine, and they refreshed my modem for me while I was on the phone with them inquiring about it.

5. My internet connection is slower.

6. The notification sounds are different - most noticeably for email. But when I followed online directions to change the sounds back using the Control Panel, most of the Program Event sounds are missing.

All of my bookmarks and documents are fine, thankfully. I thought maybe it was a virus, but I ran an Avast quick scan, and it didn't find anything. Will doing a system restore bring everything back?

Can't install W7 to SSD

Hi

My Old HD packed in last night and i have tried to reinstall W7 to a SSD i was using for games only. I am booting from CD and i can get the install about 80% through where it asks me to type PC name etc, but eventually it just goes to black screen saying boot from CD and doesn't seem to want to continue. I thought it might be because of the the SATA connectors so i have even used the same SATA connection the old HD was using to the mobo and the same thing happens.

I have included a screenshot of the 3 HD's i have. The top 1 is the one i want W7 on and it has the highest priority, so i am not sure why it won't contine the install. My Mobo is Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H. Thanks

HP Pavilion DV5-1159se - Screen and/or Graphics issue

My laptop doesn't want to use all of the available space on the screen. There is a 2-3" black area (no video) on the right hand side and a 1/2" area along the bottom that may be black as well. There is a graphics hiccup below the start button as well. I have reinstalled the graphics drivers, updated any other display drivers I could find and I've played with all of the resolution screen size settings numerous times. My mouse will not go into these black areas. It's like the edge of the screen.
Unit is running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

Hardware issue? Software issue? Any help is much appreciated. Brian

Windows 7

Hey there. Ive got a small question which i have been unfortunately unable to solve on my own. Ive got a desktop pc age of 3 years now, been running with win7 all the time. A few months back (3 to be exact) i had a computer breakdown due to software development which caused the computer break down . After it broke the windows could not start and the startup couldnt fix the system to the normal state so i had to detach the hard-drive which the windows was installed on and use the secondary harddrive i had attached at that time. The windows was installed successfully and had no problems with it except one,i was unable to find the old product key which was in use with the preinstalled windows which came with the pc. My current question is , is there anyway i could reauthenticate my windows 7 home premium and possibly update that way to win 10? Thanks ahead,if you need some other info, too, dont be affraid to ask and ill try to fill in as good as possible,

Weird User Appears Only On Start-Up

A friend of mine bought a used Vista desktop a several months ago and I helped her get it set up. Everything was fine until a few days ago when she began getting the following message on the Welcome screen:

The user name or password is incorrect:
The blue/green screen displays that says 'Windows Vista Home Premium' at the bottom
Right above the word Vista is a white X inside a red circle
To the right of the circle it says 'The user name or password is incorrect'.

Underneath that is a selection box that says OK
This displays immediately after the splash screen.

When we click on OK, we get a user name, except the user name looks exactly like an email address:

c****731@wmconnect with a white box underneath it to input a password.
underneath that password box is another selector box labeled Switch User
When we click Switch User we get the same blue/green screen with 3 user names - c****@wmconnect, Administrator and Ruth (my friend's name)
Clicking on Ruth gives me the logon screen with only her name and a spot to enter her password

Once we enter her password, her desktop displays normally.
I assumed we could just go to the control panel for user accounts (my friend is an administrator) to delete that other account, but it doesn't display. When I click 'manage another account' the only choices are Guest, Administrator and my friend.

Even logging on as the Administrator and going to User Accounts and clicking on manage another account fails to show the c****731 account, so it obviously cannot be removed that way.

Once I'm logged onto her account and I click on Switch User I can only see my friend's name and Administrator.

This other oddball user only ever displays when we boot. I would provide screenshots, but prt sc doesn't seem to copy anything to the clipboard until one is actually logged on.

Control userpasswords2 fails to show any existence of the phantom user.

Hey guys, I have a Question, is it just because my PC is old or can I make it play AT Least a 720HD Smoothly?

First of all here is what my PC is. It's a Dell Inspiron 531 Running Windows 7 I have 4GB-RAM and a 500GB-HDD AMD Sempron Processor "It's OEM Still" and it uses the Nvidia Nforce

I have a Good internet Connection of 100Mbps "so it is relatively fast" All the other PC's can play 1080 No problem. I have actually had this issue for quite some time now I just never really thought about trying to see if it is Fixable. Well anyways the issue is that no matter what Browser I use I cannot make a YouTube video play smoothly AT ALL even in 480 it will a little laggy the first 4 seconds or so. Now If I even think about trying 720 or 1080 it will just play a little bit stop the audio will keep going then the video will kinda play stop again just it's Effing annoying even in 480 it does this crap just not near as bad it's "Watchable' lets put it that way... When it's in 480. I have Updated java, Updated Abode Changed Browsers, I have went into "Computer --> Properties --> Advanced System Settings --> then went to advanced --> advanced again changed the RAM to max which is 8192... It's like my PC is not fast enough I have a

Windows Explorer crash

Hello sir/madam,

since a week or so, my Windows Explorer keeps crashing. I'll start it and it and it'll crash saying "Windows Explorer has stopped working", followed by "Windows Explorer is restarting..." and then the former again. This mostly goes on for a long time until finally it stops at random.

I can't open Windows Explorer during this time and canceling the message doesn't keep it from reappearing. Neither does Task Manager. I've tried System Repair and it didn't help. I have an Asus i7 laptop that I bought in October 2011, if that matters.

I am pretty much a layman so please tell me whatever other info you need to help me out. Also, my laptop is in Dutch so I'm not entirely sure if I've used the exact terminology in English.

Thank you so much,
Axel

Windows 7 Activation Disaster

$

I have two machines, one running Win 7 x64 Ultimate, my main machine (call i A) and a box I got from a second hand shop running Win 7 32 Home Premium (call it B). Both have, or had, genuine, activated Windows on them.

Because of a disk problem on A, I decided to remove one of the RAID pair of disks and test it on machine B, not as boot drive, just as another drive. Unfortunately due to a brain fade, for some reason I unplugged the SATA cable to B's actual boot drive and only realised when I started the machine... and it booted into Machine A's copy of Windows and went on a mad driver hunt. Realising my error, I shut it down and reconnected the correct boot drive.

However, on restarting, the correct version of Windows- the Home Premium 32- has decided it is not genuine Windows. I would have thought that if anything, it would be the "wrong" version that would do that (since due to my error it briefly ran on two machines simultaneously), but no, it's the one that has only ever been on one machine that has phoned home to Microsoft and got deactivated.

So, I have tried chatting online to somebody not very helpful at the Microsoft help desk who says, the product key is an OEM version, they cannot unblock it(!) and I must contact the OEM.

The OEM being a dodgy little secondhand shop rather than like Dell or Compaq, who are going to have zero interest in sorting anything out. Not least since, after all, they gave me a working copy of Windows 7 and it's Microsoft who have stopped it working and are now saying it's beyond their powers to unblock it. To make matters worse, even if I wanted to buy a new key- which would cost more than the machine itself cost or is worth- they don't sell Windows 7 ones anyway, and I'd rather stab my eyes out with a fork than use Windows 10.

I don't know what, if anything, I can do next. About four hours ago I had a perfectly fine working machine with genuine Windows on it, now I haven't, and Microsoft are saying it's not their problem. Even though their activation system has stopped it working properly.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what I can do next?

Windows 7 Won't boot, new problems arising

$

Hey all, last night when I returned home, my computer started to not be able to boot. I found this forum last night following a length thread of what seemed to be a similar problem, but ended up being something unrelated.

I will try to give as much information as I can to aid you in aiding me:

2 drives:
C: SSD (OS located here)
D: HDD (bulk of files located here)

The last thing I did before it stopped working was a defrag of my HDD via AdvancedSystemCare.

Prior to that maybe a day or so, I had reinstalled Skype, which brought up blue screen memory dump followed by a restart. The reason I reinstalled Skype, is because probably a month or so ago, it was causing the same crash.

I can't remember exactly what the initial error screen brought up. Something like "Windows failed to start, a recent hardware or software change may be the cause". The two choices were along the lines of: Startup repair (recommended) or Start Windows Normally.
Naturally, I chose startup repair. I didn't write down too many details, but when I ran startup repair, it could not detect the error automatically.

I went into other options for system repair, starting with Startup Repair option at the top. This lead to the same outcome.

I went to system restore, and all 3 of the available choices just lead me to the same place once I restarted. I can't remember if it was all of them, or just one, but I do remember the most recent option gave me an error code 0x800700b7 (not sure if this means anything to you guys).

I tried system image recovery but did not have any.

After none of the recovery options worked, I went to the Memory Diagnostics Tool. This lead to no found errors from it.

At this point, I believed that I messed around in BIOS a little bit, but didn't change anything.

I then began to search online for help. Here is a link to the forum that brought me here, I tried following some of the different steps to see if they would help my case: http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ly-768938.html

I tried following most of the steps form that in order. Today when I was working on it some more, I believe I used some boot command to copy the files to my D: (HDD), and now new problems are arising. Now when I go into BIOS, my keyboard and mouse don't seem to work, so I have to hard power off my computer. I'm now getting new options after the "windows failed to start properly. They are:
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good configuration (Advanced)
Normal
All of which just end up restarting when windows tries to boot.

My main concern are files I have on my C: drive for school. I don't care if I have to do a clean install and lose everything else, I really just can't lose those files. My friend says he has a windows 7 startup disc I could use if needed (as I don't have one), so figured I'd ask here before I mess more things up. I'd like to think I'm pretty decent with computers, but this has me stumped.

One last thing I just remembered seeing on a few of the restarts: when it gives notifications while updating at the bottom of the screen, I saw (but wasn't able to copy it down fast enough when I thought of it) was:
registry/machine/component followed by <I'm not sure> 43 of 43

Sorry if a lot of this information is useless, I just feel the more information you have, the better. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi everyone. I have a dell Inspiron windows 7 premium sp1 64 bit.The computer has been running slow. about 2 weeks ago I get a phone call from someone claiming to be from dell. I ask how can I be sure you are from dell. they had me bring up a computer ID # and read it back to me. They said they were receiving error warnings from me. We then tested some things and finally ended up on the "event viewer" It showed Administrative events number 2,133 . Errors and warnings. We tried but could not delete them. Next to the senior tech who did some more and had no success. Next I was told it would cost $180 and take 2 hrs to fix. I declined and hung up. Today I got another call as a follow up to make sure they had fixed my problem. I said they want to charge me . They tested my computer again and said this is very serious . I hung up again. I have 2 questions. Is this really Dell calling me ? Is this a big problem and how can i fix it? I do have the dell install windows disc. I thought I would reformat and install a fresh copy of windows. All input is appreciated . gary
