SSD recognised as HDD

Hi

Just got system mechanic and am defragmenting my drives. I have 2 SSD's and 1 of them is my main system drive and the other is for gaming. The gaming SSD is recognised as a normal HDD and not an SSD, whereas the system SSD is recognised no problem. System Mechanic uses different defragmenters for HDD's and SSD's so I'd rather the gaming SSD was recognised correctly.

I'm using W7 64 and my motherboard is a gigabyte 990fxa-ud3.

Any ideas how I can resolve this?

Thanks

Runaway modified memory issue

So I've been dealing with this problem for a few months and I've been stumped and am going crazy reading a ton of memory problems that don't match what I'm dealing with. :banghead:

It started a few months ago. I would randomly get a warning that my system memory was getting low and that I needed to close applications. It started when I was using SolidWorks and I figured that was just because I only had 4GB of ram and needed to upgrade my system. But then it started happening with just Firefox running. Again, chalked it up to an aging system

Well about a month ago I picked up a couple engineering computers from my work quad core Xeon processors and more ram. Stuck in a new SSD and did a clean install of Windows 7 Pro 64bit on both of them.

It didn't take long for me to get everything set up and to my frustration I'm again having the same issue! My system has 12GB of RAM and my wife's only has 6GB but is otherwise identical and hers isn't doing it.

I've started watching what the RAM stats show in the Resource Monitor. And what I see is it's usually sitting at 3GB in use running just Firefox, goes up to near 4GB if I'm watching Netflix. A very small amount of "modified memory" and a small amount of "standby", and 7-8GB free.

When the problem strikes, the "modified memory" will start to climb. From a few hundred MB to 7+GB in just a few minutes. Sometimes it releases the memory before triggering the low mem warning, but every once in a while, like a couple times per night at seemingly random times, it maxes out the memory, pops the warning up and kills Firefox.

I don't think the problem is Firefox though because I know it's happened a few times when Firefox isn't even running. It seems totally random. I've tried adjusting the paging file size and it's made no difference.

Anyways, any insight into this would be appreciated. This started probably back in August and is just getting worse even with a much better system and a clean install of Win7. Yet on an identical new system except with less RAM it's not doing it. I've attached a screenshot of the Resource Monitor as the modified memory peaked.

Here's my system info:

Old System:
3.0GHz Core2Duo, 4GB DDR2, 120GB Samsung 840 EVO system drive

New System: 2.8GHz Xeon Quadcore, 12GB DDR3, 128GB Samsung 850 Pro system drive

A few Windows 7 issues.

I'm not all that good with the in-depth parts of computers (drivers, software, hardware) and have some issues.
Before I start I'm going to post a bunch of my computer specs:
(specs from Piriform Speccy)
(Also note, I built this computer, and the GPU was added later on, it originally ran only on the APU internal graphics before)

-Tower: NZXT Source 210 Elite Mid Tower
-Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
-CPU/APU: AMD A10-5800K
-RAM: Ripjaws X series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model F3-17000CL11D-8GBXL
-Motherboard MSI FM2-A75MA-E35
-GPU: 2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti (EVGA)
-HDD: 466GB Western Digital WDC WD50 00AAKX-00ERMA0 SATA Disk Device (SATA)
-PSU: Corsair CX 430 watt
-Wireless Network Adapter: ASUS PCE-N15 11n Wireless LAN PCI-E Card

A few of the issues I have:
My CPU(APU really) is running hot, it's averaging at 70 *C at only 10% load, with almost no programs up. The rest of my computer is fine, the GPU and HDD only come in at 30 *C average.

My network adapter won't keep the driver updated, it keeps reverting to an old driver each time I restart my computer, and I have to keep updating it each and every time, or else my computer keeps a slow connection. I downloaded the driver from the asus website, but it's JUST the driver file, I have to go to Start>Computer/Manage>Device Manager>Network Adapter>Update driver software>Browse my computer.
I have to do this EVERY time I restart, it's not a major problem, but it's really annoying.

I can't help but feel like my computer runs much slower than it should be. It takes a VERY long time to boot up, programs will sometimes slow down for no reason (that I can see). Games that should be run no problem will have slowdowns and frame drops which they shouldn't.

-----

I keep my machine dust free, the tower isn't very full so it SHOULD have good air flow, but I am not sure... I have two case fans, both near the back, the one on top is blowing in, the one on the back is blowing out (but it seems kinda weak). The rest of my computer is fine for temperature as far as I can tell, it's the CPU/APU that's running hot.

I have Defrag run once a week, I use CCleaner every now and then to keep old stuff from bogging up my harddrive, I use Avast! anti-virus and Malwarebytes anti-malware.

Don't know what else to put down really. Can anyone help me?

Webpages loading inconsistantly or not at all in any browser

Some time between May and July of this year, my 3 year old Toshiba Satellite L755D-S5171 started having some browsing issues. I'm running windows 7 service pack 1.

When I attempt to load a site it will most often load only part of the page and take too long. Examples: everything loads except the all/some images, ONLY plain text and images load with no structure, or everything loads except embedded videos. Pages frequently fail to load at all. Even when pages load flawlessly they tend to take much longer than they should. This behavior shows up on and off every day. I have to refresh a page anywhere between 3-40 times to get it to load properly. My laptop is the ONLY computer on the home network to have this problem, and it occurs in ANY browser, even the Steam client browser. It happens on both the ethernet and wifi connections. I've even had an uninterrupted video call on skype while having this issue, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with the connection. As far as I can remember, I made no significant changes to my computer to prompt this problem to arise.

Things I have tried that WORK:
-restarting my modem/router AND my laptop at roughly the same time
only tried this a few times but it makes my internet work flawlessly for up to one day
-booting in safe mode with networking
in safe mode I can browse the internet perfectly!! So this must mean something running on my computer is interfering with my ability to load websites, right? This fixes the problem until I restart normally
Things I've tried that did NOT WORK:
-loading a restore point
-disabling firewall
-switching to openDNS from my isp's DNS, then switching to GoogleDNS
-disabling IPv6
-temporarily uninstalling my antivirus (ESET)
-unplugging my modem/router and plugging it in again (as noted above this helps if I also restart my computer, strangely)
-running Malwarebytes. Located and removed some i-beta.com garbage but that's it
-flushing DNS cache
-releasing/renewing IP as administrator. I usually get an error when I try this but when I did it just now to see the error again I didn't get it? Anyway the problem still persists

I'm probably forgetting some other things I've attempted over the months. I'm willing to try pretty much anything but I will only do a clean install of windows if it's somehow the only option. Do any of you fine folks have advice?

VLC video freezing and grey pixelation

I've used VLC for a long time and it's usually been perfect, but have been having this issue for the past few months. I can't remember if it's since a certain update. It doesn't happen constantly, but it's really annoying. I've seen different advice about the issue posted around such as changing the video output to directX but that hasn't made any difference. Anyone have an idea what causes it and can suggest a proper solution?
Thanks.

Windows 7 logs into temporary profile

$

Hello!

I had taken apart and dusted my PC yesterday, and upon starting it back up my main profile seems to be corrupt. When I attempt to log into it, Windows places me into a temporary user instead. I have wracked the internet for solutions and tried almost everything I have come across. This includes:

-Changing the registry values for the correct profile (removing .bak) and restarting PC

-Deleting the registry value for the correct profile and restarting the PC to attempt to recreate the profile (It still logged me into a temporary)

-Copying the entire profile (without hidden user files residing in main user folder like ntuser.dat, .log, .ini) to a new profile and restarted PC

-Running a chkdsk in safemode (did not fix anything), along with a sfc/scannow afterwards

I have come to the end of my rope. I do not know or understand what needs to be done at this point to restore my profile. I desperately need all the files on my profile and drive, so I do not wish to reformat my PC.

The only next possible step I can see for myself is make a copy of the profile I am trying to save, and then delete the original from the users folder. Then I would restart the computer and try to log into that account so that it is remade, and paste the old contents of the profile into the newly made 'same' profile. However, I am unsure of what results this would yield so I am afraid of going through with it.

I'm capable of providing any information about my machine or things I have or have yet to try; I am so ready to solve this issue but disheartened from numerous failures.....

Thank you.

Installing Win7 from USB problem.

When I try to install Win7 from my USB stick the error message "Missing operating system. Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" appears.
I currently have Ubuntu 15.10 installed on my SSD. I also have a 1TB HD which is currently empty (this is where Win7 should go). Trying to install Win XP or Ubuntu from a USB sick is not an issue. The error message only appears when I try to install Win7.
I created the stick with UNetbootin and have already tried 3 different Win7.iso files but all show the same error message. My system is the G771JMC Laptop from ASUS.
All help is appreciated! Thanks for your help!

Skype new additions

I am trying to ADD a new CONTACT to my Skype application, but I am failing miserably! It seems so confusing. I only want to ADD one or two family members, but not part of a GROUP. Or does the word "GROUP" just mean ANY person?
I have clicked on to the Skype website for information regarding ADDING a contact, but, as I have previously stated, that seems so confusing. Where do I ADD a new contact? Is it in the dialog box on the right that pops up, or is it on the lower part of the screen?
If anyone can give me a step-by-step guide ( or a click-by-click guide!), I would be so grateful!

I work in a public computer lab and someone put a password on one of our computers. We do not know who it was or how to get into the computer. We do not have a password reset disk or the original vista installation disk. I have tried running the computer in safe mode but it still asks for a password.

ALIENWARE Mx11 R3 Laptop (Windows 7-10) HELP PLEASE

$

So I was really looking forward to having my first Alienware Laptop only to see that the previous owner of the laptop had left the poor computer infested with malware and I was forced to do a complete system restore and then I proceeded to upgrade the system's software from Windows 7 to Windows 10 without thinking of re-installing all the Alienware Software (Command Center, AlienRespawn, AlienFx etc.) before doing this big change. Well the Windows upgrade went great, but the only downside was that the drivers for Alienware computers with Windows 10 is incompatible with my slightly outdated Mx11 R3 laptop. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO ACCESS THE SPECIAL EFFECTS ON LAPTOP (lights, settings, backup options etc.)

Not only that but I attempted to uninstall Windows 10 back to Windows 7 so I could re-install my drivers but the upgrade did not give me the 'Roll Back Time' option available for most Windows Upgrade users. I tried to find solutions to uninstall Windows 10 through the command prompt and powershell but have been unable to. As for Command Center I have been unable to find one program compatible to my old computer running with brand new software...

I need some assistance with this used to do this type of stuff years ago but the mind is not what it used to be

I upgraded my laptop (Toshiba L650) to win 10 using the free windows upgrade it upgrade fine no warning or anything about 6 weeks after the upgrade started having problem it wouldn't update an windows products couldn't use Edge so I called Microsoft and they did a few tests and came back with the conclusion that laptop was not compatible with 10 and I need to contact Toshiba for the new drivers, did this and was told they were working on it but that they had so many models that it could take 2 to 3 years if ever to get to my model, I gave them a mouthful know I was wasting my breath.
Sorry for the long story but I am still a little peeved about the whole thing
I have a windows 7 disk from my old PC can I use these to reinstall windows 7 on my LPtop? If yes what do I need to do? Do I need to uninstall windows 10 ? and what information will I need to save?
Help will be much appreciated

I am using Firefox on a Windows Vista SP2 system. On October 22, 2915, something put 8 files, all 2048 bytes long, in a folder named ".#" in \roaming. They are named:
MBX@1440@2BA1C18.###
MBX@1440@2BA1C28.###
MBX@1440@2BA1C38.###
MBX@1440@2BA1C48.###

MBX@DD0@2991C28.###
MBX@DD0@2991C38.###
MBX@DD0@2991C48.###

They are dynamic link files but Bleepingcomputer will not let me upload any of them.

I would like to know what these file are, where they came from, and if they are dangerous and should be removed.

Windows 7 corrupted after disk clone

$

Hello, I recently had to change my Parckard Bell Easynote's failing hard disk and as I am not a computer expert, I chose to clone it after I read this was the best and easiest option. Everything seemed fine after the clone except for Windows Update which reported errors. Now, I am getting warnings that my copy of Windows is not being recognised as authentic. I still have the original hard disk and some rescue disks, but I have a lot of personalised files, music and programs that I am really nervous of losing if I reinstall Windows.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Are there 2 copies of User files in Windows 7?

In Windows 7 Windows explorer the directories "\documents and settings" and "\Users" , are the same size, appear to reside on 2 different places on the disk and are mirror copies of each other. If I rename a file in a \documents and settings directory it also renames the file it in the \Users directory. It seems my large music library is taking up twice the room it should. Can someone shed some light on my confusion?
