Flyswat old & gray

#1 About 6 months ago I changed to windows 7x64 based sys form 32. WHY is there so much update on 64. Most of it is security. About 300 to 400MB monthly
and a lot of duplication. At this rate I will be old & gray sooner rather than later or out of space or need a larger machine.
#2 I use Outlook for in and out mail. I do not seem to be able to change the color and size of the font permanently. It does change but its reverts back when I leave and than return. By the way this is my first time on this site or even asking for help so if I have not asked properly please advise and yes I am old & gray.

Maxed out RAM...then everything went to Hell

I own a Dell XPS 8700 desktop. When I upgraded the RAM from 12GB to 32GB the PC started crashing randomly with power failures. It was every few minutes. It got so bad that I had to put the old RAM back in. When I did, the PC runs fine.

I bought RAM from Crucial. I ran a Mem 86 test on it and it said it was OK.

So, I'm at a loss as to what is going on with my PC.

Anyone have any ideas?

Public Lobby Display - Calendar & Event Showing

Hi there,

I have a question and am not really sure where to post it.

I work for a company who has a TV in the lobby area, they would like to have calendar events and other things show up as a part of the displaying features. Right now I am currently using just a PDF with a ton of photos running on a cycle.

Ideally they want to have photos of their work being displayed but also other items. Does anyone know if there are apps/OS/anything that has features that would work in this way?

Thank you!

Macrium Backup Question

Hi All...

I previously had a Toshiba Satellite C655 with a Win7 Ultimate SP1 O/S.

My question is since I backup up to a 1TB external drive using Macrium Reflect and now I have a totally different computer (AMD10...Win7 Home Edition SP1)) do I just continue backing up after a full backup to the same external drive? Or do I wipe it clean and start all over again?

Thanks!

BFE Missing, Access Denied

The problem is that when trying to import the BFE it comes up with access denied, error accessing registry. I have viewed numerous posts about this and the solution always seems to go into regedit and change the permissions on the BFE folder. But for me there is no folder with the title BFE in the registry. I followed the file path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ just like everyone else. I did recently have a virus and I'm sure I have completely removed it.

Any help would be appreciated

Win Update Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 Ethernet Controller

I'm running Win 7 Pro on Acer laptop; got Win Update trying to install >>>
Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-ETHERNET CONTROLLER ; needless to say it failed with ERROR details CODE 80070103;
I checked the drivers and tried updating them and it said that the drivers were updated. I also noticed that my power button,(normally blue) started turning a flashing red and my screen would go black, like a screensaver. As soon as i touched it i needed to log in and whatever i had in Windows would resume and was unaffected. This power button issue seems to be ok now and i don't need to keep signing in and my screen doesn't go black.I changed settings in screen resolution and all is ok for now.So i was trying to see if there was any relation between Win Update failing to install what it thinks i need as far as new drivers and this power button problem.
I contacted the MS site and someone there suggested i type in System Information in search box and upload to One Drive so that i can share with everyone what the problems seems to be.I did this and here is link on One Drive if that is of any use here;

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resi...int=file%2ctxt

Why would Win Update try to install this update when there is nothing wrong with my driver? Is this creating the other problem with my power button?
It is listed as an optional update but it appears i may not need this at all.
Can someone explain and help the bigalster?

Microphone popping problem

On a Dell Optiplex 780, while I am trying to record, every couple of seconds the microphone will make a popping sound and that popping sound gets recorded into my recording software. The popping sound can also be heard from the computer speakers. I read on various websites that the microphone volume is too loud but my microphone is all the way down to 7, I can barely hear the voice message from my Galaxy s6. One website suggests to download the latest sound card drivers, but Dell doesn't provide drivers for the sound card and Windows Update doesn't house them either. Dell had the drivers for the video and most everything else, just not the sound card. I am recording with a 6 feet male to male 3.5 mm aux cable. I tried two other cables and the same results happen, the popping sound regardless of how low I turn the microphone volume down. This problem doesn't happen on either of my three laptops all running Windows 7, the popping only happens on my desktop which has the best stats of all my Windows computers.

MS Office 'Repair' does not last

I have Win7 and MS OFFICE INCL OUTLOOK 2010.
My problem: when using SEARCH PROGRAMS AND FILES, typing in a search term both regular files and outlook files pop up.
however, I can only open the regular files like ms word, excel, etc but not the outlook files.
Having read that using ms office repair (control panel + ms office + uninstall + then 'repair' would fix this, I have used it three times.
It does fix it, but then, at some later date, I have to repeat the 'repair' again.
Might it have something to do with some automatic update of ms office or NOTES? I am fairly sure I have not intentionally updated any of these.
Appreciate any advice!
With thanks,

[SOLVED] Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device

$

So, last week one of the workstations gave this error after a restart. The person using the PC had been using a thumb drive and went to remove it and it wouldn't eject so they shut down the computer so they could safely remove it (yeah, don't ask me on that ). When they restarted the PC they got either this error or "OS Missing", I don't remember which. I did scan the thumb drive with BitDefender and it's clean.

I tried repairing from the Windows install disk and at first it said that it was the wrong disc for the OS, even though it was the correct disc. However, after I put the HDD in another PC (to make sure all docs had been backed up) and then put it back in the problem PC it allowed me to launch the System Repair menu. From here I tried the top option which was System Repair and when that didn't work I used the CMD Prompt to run:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd
exit

This didn't resolve the issue either, so I reinstalled the OS (after fighting the whole "OS can't be installed because this drive is a GPT format", which is strange because it hasn't changed since I built the PC and installed the OS). After spending most of yesterday updating, reinstalling, etc., I restarted it this morning for an update and it's back saying to Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device.

I've tried turning the UEFI on and off, checked the HDD with Crystal Disk Info, unplugged everything but mouse, keyboard, HDD, and optical drive and even pulled the CMOS battery and drained power form the PC before trying again. I've also re-seated the RAM. I am currently reinstalling the OS but I'm afraid it will just repeat. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
FSG

Real Time Clock Error

$

Okay, so I'm having some trouble with my computer that I can't quite fix...
About a week ago a lightning storm rolled through and caused some issues.
My computer is plugged into a surge protector, however, the storm caused the power to turn off and on several times, my computer would automatically restart every time the power came back on. After realizing I had left my computer on (I was busy in another room) I hurried and unplugged it (I know that shutting it down before unplugging it is the proper thing to do but the computer did not even have enough time to fully boot between the intervals of power outage).
So now for the problem, every time I boot my computer I get a black screen with a few boot options, an error message (Loss of Power to the Real Time Clock), and at the top left corner, MBs counting up from 0 to 4096 (I have 4GB of RAM so I'm guessing this has something to do with memory).
After it reaches 4096 I get the option to save changes (with F1), after this I can boot the computer. Then everything works perfectly normal (still plays Fallout :D) except for the date being 1/3/1980 and the time always being wrong (although the time varies every time I turn it on).
If I correct the time and date it only goes back when I restart the computer, also, I can't load certain websites like gmail because "your clock is behind" and I don't know how to just align the time exactly through the internet...

If you need to know any more information about my computer or the exact error code just ask...

Any help would be great, Thanks!

Windows Update Stuck

So, this is a fresh install of 7 Pro x64 and it won't update. It is stuck on "Checking for Updates". My first question is, should there be a process in Task Manager related to WU? Because it doesn't look like there is.

First of i have learned now not to mess with my pc ever again because i dont know much and i think i ruined it. I have been on it all day, any help would be greatly apreciated.

What i have tried:

1) boot from cd command prompt to copy the auto registry back up.

2) tried sfc.exe but it never ends before the problem shows up.

3) i tried system restore bt the only available point is after the clean :/ when i check show more nothing happens

Please any ideas throw them out ill try them. need to avoid formatting

Please help! Every game crashes and computer restarts!

Okay so, I literally put my computer in for repair a few days ago and I just had it back yesterday, I tried to play a DayZ and Black Mesa several times, among other games and all of them crash. The premise is always the same, go onto game, wait a few minutes, maybe even seconds, game crashes and a patterned, chequered screen appears WHILE still in-game. I could even notice most of the game de-loading when it freezes. After that, most if not all the time, my monitor goes black and my computer restarts. It's really hard to explain so I hope you understand what I'm talking about. When I got it repaired last time I also bought new components, I have a new power supply and a brand new NVidia GTX 970, I'm on Windows 7 Professional.

ALL help is appreciated, thank you so much :banghead:

Windows Not Booting?

I need help, I made an oops.

I have a Dell XPS desktop running Windows 7, it's quite a beefy computer and runs everything very well for a $400 computer.

So today my computer started acting up. I could start up everything fine, until I logged in. When I logged in, the screen was just black with the cursor, no task bar, no time and date and no start button. I could do ctrl + alt + delete and open task manager and through that I could open the file browser and through the file browser I could open a lot of stuff, even a game surprisingly. However, I could not install anything. I read that I should open explorer.exe from inside task manager but this didn't fix it. There were many explorer.exe files and when I tried to open some of them they would open the file browser. At this point I was just planning to put important files on a USB drive and then restore my computer. But I was a dumb dumb and decided to try to fix it some more. I heard that hitting F8 on startup and selecting "Use last known working configuration" or something could fix it so I tried that.

This is where I goofed. Bad.

Now when I start up, a screen saying "Windows Error Recovery" at the top appears and I have the option to launch startup repair (recommended) or launch windows normally, which both basically put me in an endless cycle.

Selecting launch windows normally just begins the boot up process and then goes to a black screen with the cursor, then the computer does what I believe is a restart and gives me the beginning screen again.

When I select launch startup repair, it brings me to as screen that says "Windows Boot Manager" at the top. There is also text saying "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." It then basically tells me I need to put my Windows installation disc in, which is something I can't do as of now. I then press enter to move onto a screen to select an OS where I can select Windows 7 or use Windows Memory Diagnostic which hasn't proven to be very useful. When I select Windows 7 it just repeats from there.

I've tried most options that appear after hitting F8 on startup and most, if not all give the same results as selecting one of the two options I mentioned above. This means I can't restore, so my last resort was just destroyed.

So now I'm on my last last resort, asking here, although this probably should have been my first resort.

I saw something while searching for solutions and a guy opened up his computer and removed memory sticks from his motherboard and after trying to start his pc with the sticks individually, it failed to boot when one of the specific sticks was in. Does this seem legit? I definitely do not want to do anything like that without being guided by people that probably know better than me. I also think that the problem could be from some loose wires inside.

This is how everything is looking right now, I cannot:
-Restore my computer
-Boot in safe mode
-Access any driver stuff
-Use any programs

So does anyone have any suggestions on what to try to fix this? Do I have to perform some surgery or should I try to get my hands on a Windows installation disk? Or is there another way I could fix this without having to get physical?

Thanks, all c:

Anyone know what the latest Windows 7 (Home Premium) update was?

I have had no updates since 20 April for both Home Premium and Professional.

Says there are no updates available.

Seems unlikely ?

REstart after changing CPU to 3.0 p4

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/x...dbXXJb2DAV5iUp

you can see information about my pc.

2 days ago on may 6, I found a 3.0 ghz so i put instead of 2.8 ghz.

At first, it couldnot load windows 7. After seeing windows screen, it was restarting with bsod. So, i changed rams (i have 2x1 gb kingston , 2x1 other brands and 1 adata 512 mb and 4 slots in motherboard) in slots. Firstly, i tried all dual combinations with 2 rams in dual condition but it always restarted (i put always same slots in motherboard).

Then i tried some combinations with 3 rams. This time, i could see desktop but after some times, it was restarting.

BEfore upgrading CPU, with 2.8 ghz and with 2 x 1 gb kingston rams, there were no restarts. Rarely bsods. But now it restarts always.

I am adding my dump files as .zip t. I tried to install after may 6. Before may 6, i was trying to figure out which rams are good so i was trying combinations.

Also i saw "new driver installed for 3.0 ghz" in system tray. I dont know if this restarts are about CPU or are about new software.

For example now i am on same pc but in xp home edition, with 2 rams but no restarts. Or with 2 rams while it was restarting, i could go into xp again. Maybe xp doesnot force so much rams as windows 7 does, i dont know

I cant see so much difference between 3.0 and 2.8 so i can go back to 2.8. BUt i want to know if rams are motherboard have errrors.
