Recover Missing .Exe Files

Good Day :D

Question : How do I recover all the missing .exe files(After back up and recovery, done after a few times of system recovery)?

Details : Windows Vista, Compaq Presario

Explanation : My laptop was experiencing a stubborn blue screen problem (STOP 0x000000124) suddenly, about a few weeks ago. I've tried using anti-virus, removing recently installed software/programs and also system restore to a previous point, but to no avail. Hence, I decided to do system recovery(factory restore). (Note that I've been doing back ups for my computer every few months to an external hard drive) However, the computer was still attacked by blue screen. So, I tried windows update(but was constantly stopped by the blue screen) and installed a few anti-virus programs and registry cleaners and still the blue screen error appeared. In the last attempts to repair the computer, I did system recovery(factory restore) a few times. Finally, the computer was fixed. I manage to run windows update and installed the latest updates, and install anti-virus. So, when I found out the computer system was stable with no more blue screens, I used my external hard drive with the previous back ups to restore all my old files into my computer. Then, here comes another problem...

I realized, after I restored all the old files from my back up, that all my .exe files went missing. I wasn't able to run any one of my old programs and softwares. So, I searched Google again on how to solve the problem. The only solution I found was to use recovery programs to restore my old .exe files. However, I wasn't able to find my old .exe files even with those recovery programs such as Remo Recover, Recuva, PowerDateRecovery & etc(Note that I've installed these recovery programs on a pen-drive). I'm thinking that, is it possible the files have changed names and extensions after system recovery? or are they really lost? but I've read that these files should still be in the computer somewhere and that they have not been deleted. Also, could there be other files which also went missing that I need to recover? Please teach me how to recover all the .exe files and other important files that might have went missing.

Thanks in advance for all your help :D

system restore not working and safe mode gets stuck.

I apologize ahead of time if this is in the wrong part of the forum. I recently got a computer from a friend of mine and was aware that there were already issues with it. The OS is Win7 Home Premium x64. Previous to my current problem in order for the computer to start up properly I had to press F8 after the asus logo dissapeared and then select "Disable driver signature enforcement". Earlier today I was trying to update the video card drivers (I should have known better) when at about 25% got the blue screen of death. Now when the computer is started normally it blue screens. When I try to use Startup Repair to restore it to a previous version it tells me that it was unable to and I cant start into safe mode because it gets stuck on atipcie.sys. From what i've been reading it could be a hardware issue but before I replace anything I want to know if at this point i should try to factory reset. unfortunately I dont have the discs so I'll have to see if my friend has those or find them somewhere. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Startup Rapair cannot repair this computer Automatically

Hi,

I have a Dell Studio Laptop. It runs a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1 OS.
I recently rebooted my laptop and it went into startup repair option. I went through the below forum:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ly-768938.html

I tried running the Startup Repair, it didn't Repair.
I then tried the SFC with the below command:
sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=f:\ /OFFWINDIR=f:\windows

It said there were no integrity issues.

Then i tried the below 3 commands:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /RebuildBCD

First i ran these 3 commands with environment
X:\windows\system32
I got 0 identified Windows Installations

Then i changed to X:\sources, i got the same 0 identified installation.
Then I found a boot folder in X:\Windows\boot
I ran the same there but with no fruitful result.

I think this would be important, before booting i was having this issue of Windows not being updated. So i searched online and found that if i stop 3 services namely wuauserv, bits and cryptsvc and rename the 2 folders Catroot2 and SoftwareDistribution to Catroot2.old and SoftwareDistribution.old. I was able to update my Windows using Windows update. But then it again got stuck and then i added another '.old' to the old files so it became Catroot2.old.old and SoftwareDistribution.old.old. Since then its not booting.
I tried searching for these folders but i couldn't locate them using command prompt. Tried renaming but it couldn't find the specified file.

Shall be grateful if you could help me out with this issue.

Regards
Nikhil

So I googled the error. I tried multiple USB drives(all same model Adata uv120) , 3.0 and 2.0 ports(I'm on gigabyte ds3h b150 mb). I found a tool that makes 3.0 Bootable. Intel's 3.0 creator. I'm creating these drives on my win8 laptop 2.0 ports... If that matters. This 3.0 tool won't complete successfully no matter what I've tried. No errors, just hangs at different points. But since I got same error on 2.0 ports... What gives?! I don't have a cd drive and my external one broke last week.

Suggestions? Thanks!

Used Notebook, Change User Account Name Problem

$

Picked up a used notebook with Win7 Pro

When I go to Users in Control Panel, I can change the main user account name and the new name shows there, but it does not show in Windows (File) Explorer

I can change the Computer name, but there is something about the User name that seems like it's 'fixed' somewhere and won't change.

If I right click on it in Explorer and select Properties, it's greyed out. There is no 'Rename' either.

What am I missing? Seems like it should be a simple thing to do.

Slow Computer, High Memory Use

$

My computer has been running very slowly these last few days. A minute or so after startup, it becomes slow to respond to commands, programs such as Photoshop are a drag to use, and games (that I could naturally run just fine) show significant stuttering.

Task Manager shows an increasing consumption of memory when idle. It starts at around 1.3 GB (which is fine), and doesn't stop growing until it reaches about 2.30 GB within a few minutes. Cached memory wavers between about 1780 MB -1980 MB.

I am using Windows 7 64-bit on an Intel Core 2 Duo E7300. 4GB RAM. My HDD is split into two drives, C: and D:, with 58/232 GB and 61/232 GB free space respectively. I will give more info on my specs if necessary.

I have used CCleaner to clean out junk and the registry. Running a Malwarebytes scan shows no positives. I don't know what to do next. Has my computer gotten that old overnight?

Thanks in advance,

Downloading Windows Updates, Stuck at 0%; or a False Alarm (?)

$

During a busy period, aware that Windows 10 can install itself by a sneaky update and being too busy to check each update that comes my way, I had disabled Windows Update. Only now did I remember to check for updates. I know, dumb.
There are 80 important updates that need to be installed. They all seem okay.

However, they've been downloading for over 90 minutes now, and the progress bar is still stuck at 0%. "Downloading 80 Updates (0 KB Total, 0% Complete)".

I thought these updates might solve my "slow PC issue" (referred to in my other thread), but the inability to download updates, makes me think there might be something seriously wrong with my computer.

Can it still be just a visual issue if nothing has happened after waiting for 90 minutes?

Thanks in advance,
Katarn1

This has been posted twice (?) I don't know how that has happened. Sorry. If you can tell me how to delete it, I will.

What to do next? (System Restore problems)

$

----------Windows 7, x64 SP1 Home Premium 6.1.7601-----------
TL;DR
System restore refuses to work (make restore points) & all points are gone. No attempts to fix work except selective startup with only Microsoft services loading. Can't figure out what the root cause is.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi. Thanks in advance for any help.

I've been having this weird system restore problem. First I noticed there were no system restore points anymore (very upsetting because I really need to restore due to other problems), so I went to check it out & it wouldn't let me make any restore points
(error 0x8004232c where it says "The specified volume is nested too deeply to participate in the VSS operation"). I tried to troubleshoot it using every method available from this list (VSS service was running fine, too), and then finally I was able to make a restore point
after I disabled every service & start-up entry for anything non-Microsoft and restarted (what this page describes as clean boot, not safe mode, as that didn't work for me).

So, this is where I'm stuck. Obviously something is preventing my use of system restore, and it's not a Microsoft service. The issue is I have no idea what precisely is doing it or how to proceed from here. I have a LOT of software installed & troubleshooting through process of elimination would probably take several days of extremely tedious work, loss of settings, uninstalling, reinstalling & resetting tons of things.

Is there a way I can try to determine what is causing this in an easier or simpler/more efficient manner? I know it's probably not my anti-virus or hips/firewall, because I completely disabled and uninstalled them to try and diagnose this issue. I've also gone through & disabled services one by one that didn't seem critical, but I still couldn't manage to get a system restore point made after each one. I have also tried to fix boot record issues using "dual boot repair" software, and originally tried to fix the other issues I was having + this issue with system restore by using "Windows Repair" by tweaking.com, which has really helped me in the past. Nothing has worked. Searching online doesn't give me enough information. The guide I followed to troubleshoot originally, as linked above, doesn't tell you what to do at all if you are able to get system restore points made after trying one of the steps. That isn't helpful because I can't exactly still use my computer in the state it is in that lets me make restore points. It's equivalent to running my computer in safe mode all the time instead of normally.

It's really important that I get this fixed soon, I'm disabled, live with chronic pain & illness, and my computer is the only way for me to do anything at all, it's also the only thing that keeps me from losing my mind completely due to depression, boredom & cabin fever, my point being it would be beyond appreciated if someone can help me fix these problems really soon.
I would be very grateful & it would go a long way to making me less miserable, so thanks in advance for your time & help. If there is any more information that you need, let me know & I can provide it. I know a little more than most average computer users, but not enough to figure this one out on my own. I can get most info you want without much effort.

Maybe unrelated, I discovered this issue after having another random issue pop up suddenly where my file associations got screwed up really bad out of nowhere & even after fixing them, most of my context menu entries are not appearing. I was using the "Types" software to edit the .jpg file type (I have never ever had an issue with this software in the few years I've been using it) to change the icon, and then suddenly things like .lnk & .exe were no longer working because the file association for them wasn't there. Luckily I got some reg fixes for those, but still am suffering the loss of context menu entries, especially special software entries such as xnshellviewer, or vlc, or my ESET scanning options. I would love some help with this issue as well, but the system restore issue is much more pressing & important. I think it would make more sense to fix that first anyway. Maybe the two are related, I dont know, but I thought it may be relevant....

Kernal Timer or DPC in Memory - ThinkServer D20

Hello All,

New user here. Having an issue with a IBM/Lenovo D20. Getting daily random crashes with message: "Kernal Timer or DPC has been found in memory". System reboots and runs after crash.

Configuration is as follows:
Lenovo ThinkServer D20
Dual Xeon Processors
128Gb ECC ram
Windows 7-64 Pro
System Drive: Samsung 850 Pro SSD for Windows and Programs; SSD and DVD connected to Optical Drive SATA
WD Black 750gb user drive and WD Black 250gb for Adobe scratch disk.
Recent install of Nvidia K4000 Quadro video card replacing Geforce 660. (All old drivers removed, new installed.)

I've run memory tests in Windows, all good.
Run Chkdsk, all good.
Removed new Quadro drivers and let Win put in it's own, earlier drivers. No love. Next planning to replace Quadro with old 660 card to see what happens in case Quadro is bad.

Ideas?

Thanks,
Joe

Cant run zeronet on W7 machine

So Im investigating zeronet: https://zeronet.io/
trying to run it on my W7 64 bit machine but am having no luck.

This tutorial explains how to do it, and its very straightforward:

However when I download and access/click on the zeronet.cmd file DOS briefly appears (for less than a second, it really just flashes) and then disappears without anything having been launched. Essentially nothing happens.

Any thoughts/advice?
