Sharing Folders won't share subfolders

$

Hey all. I run Windows 7 on a laptop I use for storing my videos/music and I've been having a heck of a time with the sharing. Whenever I share a folder it shares that folder but any folders in that folder it won't let me access remotely. I'm just wondering if there's some setting or something I need to change to allow that.

Thanks for your time.

Microphone still not working!!!

Ok, now I've just about had it with this ******* life and all it's ********, I am literally on the brink...
So the last, in a very long line of "this life sucks and nothing good can ever happen in it" things, is that me and a friend of mine decided we wanna play some online games and use VOIP(probably through skype).

So we fixed up his pc(his motherboard fried), we bought a new motherboard, some more ram, went to a provider and got him internet(and these things took some doing as we are both piss poor), etc. but no matter what I did I couldn't get the freaking microphone to work!!!!....

So here's what we got:

- windows 7 x64(ultimate edition I think);
- windows fully updated(apart from a few updates that failed to install, most having to do with net framework 4.5, still working on those);
- new motherboard is a Asus M4A78-EM(realtek onboard sound cad)
- latest win 7 64 drivers for the motherboard(audio included) from the asus website;
- no problems in device manager, no exclamation point, no question mark, no yellow, nothing;
- tried every possible combination of settings from the realtek sound manager and from windows sound panel;
- tried 2 pairs of headphones with microphone, extremely low chance that both have broken mics(they both behave exactly the same);
- tried the mic jacks both in the front panel of the case and in the back straight into the sound card, nothing. (if I insert the headphone jacks those work, just not the mics);
- literally went through about a dozen google search pages, tried several search phrases, read dozens of forums/posts, etc.;
- in the ******* end spent more money(that we do not have!) and bought a new Logilink usb sound card model UA0053. Nothing, behaves exactly the same as the onboard one.

Results: No matter what I do there are only 2 main results(depending on how I mess with the sample rate, bit depth, noise suppression and volume settings): eighter no sound at all when you speak in the mic, or just an annoying/constant buzzing sound. Once I managed to get rid of the buzzing and reduce the sound to a couple of crackles and pops(maybe from his speaking into it?) but nothing that would even closely resemble a human voice.

I'm really hoping someone can help me get the damn mics to work?!?!(preferably on the onboard sound card so I can return the other one and get our money back)
So please, tell me what the hell else can I do?! Cause I am right there man, right on the ******* edge of the cliff, this life just needs to push me one more time....

Thank you.

Computer won't boot! Can't even boot to usb from bios

I have a Z87-g45 gaming motherboard and I can't get it to boot to usb.

My computer completely crashed after I ran hitman and malewarbytes. I ran both scans and each told me a restart was needed so I waited for both to finish since they both required a restart. Prob was not good idea since now my computer won't boot at all. Once I was prompted of a failed startup I chose to restart from last known good configuration. It just got hung on the starting Windows screen for over 3 hours.

So I tried changing the bios to ufei instead of legacy+ufei and tried to see if that helped. It didn't. I've tried restoring bios to defaults to see if it helped it did not. Stuck on loading Windows screen. I took the battery out of the mother board and left it out for 5 mins and tried to start it. Same thing stuck on loading Windows. After trying to load to safe mode with network and without network and trying to load to command prompt and it all still getting stuck I decided to go purchase a new computer to try to get some recovery software to try to fix the problem.

So my first choice of programs to try is Hiren. I downloaded Hiren and it was an iso file. So I formatted my usb thumbnail to Fat32 and used PowerISO to burn the Hiren ISO to the usb. (Using the create bootable usb option) after it was finished burning to the usb. I removed it from computer and put it into broken PC. Booted PC up and push F10 till I got to the bios. Changed boot priority to #1 uefi usb #2 usb. Saved changes and restarted. Went to stuck loading Windows screen. Power off, power on F10 changed bios from uefi+legacy to just uefi and booted usb first priority. Saved and rebooted. Went to stuck loading Windows screen. Figured I'd just try to see if command promp would work. Power off, power on F10 changed to default bios settings saved and restarted. Windows failed to load restart with command promp. Stuck on Windows loading screen but it finally worked and I was in command promp. Trying several commands to figure out what drive the usb was and looking on Google trying to find list of commands to use with command prompt. The computer automatically just restarted and I didn't even execute any command. Now unsure I can get to command prompt again. Tried rebooting again and again about 4 or 5 times and get stuck on Windows loading screen and no option of boot to command prompt.

I can get to efi shell easily but don't think that's gonna help me with what I need. I honestly don't know what I should run off of hirens even if I do get it to run. I'll use to research Google as I go. My biggest problem is trying to get the usb to load then if someone would like to walk me to diagnose the problem id be forever grateful!

Please help me. I've repaired computers that have crashed before but this is first time this computer with this motherboard has crashed and I just can't get it to do right and it's been killing many days just watching a stuck screen.

Please! TY in advance!

uninstalling WinPcap

I'm trying to install WinPcap for use with WireShark (I need it to see live traffic) but I can't install it because it says a previous version of WinPcap is already installed, specifically:

"A Previous version of WinPcap has been detected on this system cannot be removed because it is in use by another application. Please close all WinPcap-based applications and run the installer again"

Simply closing Firefox will not let me remove it. I removed it from my system in the control panel, and that doesn't do it either. I also did what this recommends, but it doesn't say which version of windows to do it with.

https://www.winpcap.org/misc/faq.htm#Q-1

The question about removing it.

I also tried doing what this recommends

windows 7 - How do I remove an old version of WinPcap? - Super User

I deleted the packet.dll file and the winPcap.dll file

I WAS ABLE to install the new version of WinPCap in safe mode with networking, like the asker was in that thread, this time it just told me that it couldn't remove it, but that other program was using it. I'd still like to remove the old version as it could cause conflicts.

Need suggestions for improving laptop speed

$

I have an older laptop that I use on limited occasions - it is running Win7 64 bit Premium with a Celelon 900 CPU, 250GB HDD (68GB used) and 3 GB ram. After a slow bootup 50-60 seconds the CPU usage monitor initially fluctuates between 18 and 100% and then remains at 100%.

I know that the Celeron 900 is not noted for speed and not fast be today's standards but recently it has become agonizingly slow to respond to anything I attempt to open (sometimes several minutes). I have run a variety of cleaners, optimizers, disk checks/repairs, antispyware, virus and maleware scans to no avail. Also have disabled most all startups and switched most all services to manual.
I have Comcast that provides between 80 and 90 Mbps internet speed.

I would appreciate any suggestions on any additional steps I might undertake to resolve this slow response issue.

Has Anyone Figured out how to install Windows 7 and do the Windows Update Quicklys

$

I don't know about the rest of you but I am starting to think Microsoft is paying back the Windows 7 stalwarts by making it almost impossible to use Windows Updates on a new install.

What was taking as much as 36 hours to complete is now in a world of endless non actions and I have personally gone as much as 48 hours without a response on "Check for Updates". Oh yes and the "Rollup", well that is fun too. That is where you go to the "Microsoft Windows catalog" and download all the updates you want and then click on them to try to install them and a box opens up something to the effect of "Searching for Standalone Installer Files" that I have run as much as 48 hours with no response at all, same as "Check for Updates". Try to take the updates out and I can't see where they actually exist to try to remove them.

Well that was one way to convert me to Windows 8 which is the only lower OS I dare install because of the time lag in getting the updates to come in. It also makes it nearly impossible to not upgrade the user with a corrupted Windows 7 system but I keep thinking there has to be something I am missing. But at least Windows 8.1 will make the updates available in a reasonable amount of time.

Start menu issue

I just discovered something weird in my start menu. When I started up my computer, I noticed that a folder in it was highlighted in orange like it does with new folders and programs. The folder is called 'Programs', and when I open it, it has the entire list of things in my start menu, a fabulous redundancy.

Since I have no idea what might have caused it, or if the glitch is unrelated to everything, I'm just going to list everything I've done today.
I ran AdwCleaner, then restarted my computer. A bit later, I installed and ran the free version of MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Home, then restarted it again. In both scans, it found a few minor issues. The second time it restarted (after running MalwareBytes) it loaded slower than usual when I logged in to my account, which I presumed was because I had just run the tool.
After everything had loaded up, I installed the trial version of WolfQuest 2.7.2. I ran it briefly, then uninstalled it because my computer wasn't powerful enough.
Around that time, I noticed the weird 'Programs' folder when I clicked on 'all programs'. I'm not entirely certain at what point today that folder came into being.

Here are the files from the scans I ran, in case I messed something up there.

Win 7 64 crashes

My win 7 64 desktop computer shuts down almost every day and sometimes a few times in one day. I get a message saying after restarting that it has crashed and do I want to send a report to Microsoft which I do every time. I also have a problem with Windows update failing with Inel HD graphics 4400 driver which may or may not be related to my other problem.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Bill

Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically

Good afternoon.

My system died and a repair shop said the mobo was dead. I purchased a new barebones kit. I am using the video card and hard drive from the old PC in the new kit. Ram, mobo, and CPU are new. I hooked it all up and it would not boot. It asked me to do a system repair. Unfortunately when I got this I lost the ability to use my mouse and keyboard. After some searching I found a setting in BIOS that I enabled to allow the computer to recognize legacy keyboards and mice. I thought I was brilliant and I would be up and running soon. After 3 attempts at repair it now says it can't do it and asks me to send the info to Microsoft. I have tried system restore with all the dates available but upon reboot it kicks me back to the recovery option again. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

128gb microSD has write-protected itself.

Hello folks. Haven't posted in literally years since 99.9% of the time I know what i'm doing if the issue isn't explicitly hardware-related. Anyway, I recently updated my Nvidia Shield Tablet to Android Marshmallow, and popped in a 128gb microSD of mine in order to get it registered\recognized by the system.

However, even though I declined the prompt to make it adoptable storage, it still somehow write-protected itself. Now I can't delete or add files to it, much less format it. When I check its properties, its file system is now reported as DCF, which seems to be most commonly either for cameras or an encrypted iOS format.

I've tried both clearing it's attributes in DISKPART and a registry tweak to turn off write-protection, to no avail. I'm willing to try a Linux live disc, but have no idea which distro would be optimal.

I'd obviously rather not spend $35-45 at Newegg to get a new card, so I figured i'd inquire with you folks before I gave up on the card and destroy it (literally snap it in half) in order to protect my data.

Sorry about the Wall-O-Text, and thanks for reading.

EDIT: I've upgraded computers since registering, and my OS is now Windows 7 64-bit with Service Pack 1

When I manually select windows update and MSE update it just runs on and on with no result.
I was wanting to know when the most recent windows update was for vista. The last listed update in MSA is 8-29-16 and the auto scan did not run today or last week I did it manually.

Is it a problem to use 2 backup programs?

$
0
0
I've been running 2 scheduled daily backups (one to hard drive, one to tape drive) and it just hit me, could I be causing a conflict between the 2 backups because both are incremental backups (just what changed since the last backup)? Such as if the hard drive backup runs first, will it mark the changed files as backed up causing the tape drive backup not to back up those files?

Basically, I want to know if the way backup programs mark a file as backed up is specific to the program, or do all files get marked as backed up the same way by all backup programs?

The 2 programs I use are Windows Backup and Yosemite Server Backup.

Thanks

[SOLVED] USB 3.0 powered but not recognizing devices

$
0
0
(I know this question has been asked many times, but I still feel I need one-on-one coaching through it.)

After a Windows system update of 50 items, my only USB 3.0 port no longer recognizes devices. My half-dozen USB 2.0 ports are OK.

In Device Manager, under USB controllers, the only two headings out of eleven that have 3.0 are:

- NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller
- NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Root Hub

Both say device is working properly. (In fact, all devices under that section are said to be working properly.)

As far as I can recall, no USB driver discs were sent with this computer (I even had to make my own setup discs; it did not come with a sealed Windows 7 install disc)

What might be my next step?
