Hello guys

The Desktop is xw4400; X64; W7.

Yahoo has changed its policy, so I want to migrate those contacts to my account '@hotmail.com'. Then close Yahoo by 18/09/2017 when the new policy takes effect.

To do so I need to get Outlook 2016.

Can someone advise me how to do that, please.

Thank you. :thumb:

wont update windows

error 80073712, this is what I get when trying to update windows 7; plus it says updates "never run", and nothing shows in the log. I've kept it updated!

I've tried all the suggestions about the KB fixes, scannow, everything. but nothing helps.

plus there seems to be other problems with computer, i.e. when clicking on a link, it will NOT open it. sometimes I can get a site to open "incognito".

so, thinking its just plain time to do a full OS install. if you agree, please walk me thru the steps so it will come out right. dont it before and still had some problems after....I've backed up what I want to keep, and I will need to know how to restore it when OS is installed.

thanks for all your help!!!

On a scale of 1-10, how screwed am I?

So my laptop, a Dell inspiron 5520 and runs Windows 7, won't turn on and won't charge either (when charger is plugged in, the light on the adapter is on but the charging light on laptop isn't). Yesterday my computer froze so I shut it down and tried to reboot. Instead I received an error message that there was a hard drive failure and windows couldn't start. Repaired the hard drive. Everything was fine. Couple hours later tried to use my laptop again (by then it was in hibernation) and received yet another error message that said my computer can't come out of hibernation. I let it continue on and the thing blackscreened on me. It was like that for fifteen minutes. Unplugged the charger, took out the battery, held the power button for 20 seconds, then reconnected everything and now...nothing. Theres like no sign of life coming from it.

Im just wondering what could have possibly caused this. Did i short circuit the battery? Did my mother board give out? The thing is only three years old. Whatever it is, can it be fixed?

ok, win7 laptop....when I download something, it will open a new tab marked untitled, and blink like crazy!!! I have a hard time trying to delete the tab; also when I try to click on a link within something, it wont open a new tab.

whats this problem? I've either got a virus/malware problem or I'm a jinx on computers as I get older.....:uhoh:

thanks for some input on this silly problem now.

Windows 7 Black Screen w/Cursor

I currently have a issue with a computer that when it boots up it will go to a black screen with just the cursor active. The reason for this is that power was lost during some updates, I don't know which updates they were but following the power outage the black screen occurs.
The system is running Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit
The hard drive is a Samsung Pro 840 256 GB SSD
Things I've done so far:
- sfc /scannow
- sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\windows (No integrity violations)
- Attempted to do an upgrade from Windows 7 SP1 to Windows 7 SP1
- Attempted to do an upgrade from Windows 7 SP1 to Windows 10 via bootable USB but errors out saying in order to upgrade you have to run it from within Windows.
- All safe modes do the exact same thing with the black screen and cursor.
- BIOS reset
- New video card
- Transferred hard drive to a working laptop with the same issue.
- Boot from last known good config
- No System Restore points available
- dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
- Check disk has been done with no errors or bad sectors.

Any other recommendations to repair/undo bad updates that failed due to a power outage?
Also, is there anyway to upgrade to Windows 10 without booting into the OS?
Lemme know if you need any further information or anything I might of forgotten, thanks again!

taskeng.exe Again

Hi Folks,

I know several people have had this problem in various forms, but I can't find a solution to my particular variation.

While running my desktop on Vista, I had the taskeng.exe pop up every few minutes. Couldn't get rid and just minimised the windows, but it was still really annoying. I assumed it was just one of the consequences of running an out-of-date and unsupported system.

I have upgraded the desktop to Windows 7, but while that has sorted a lot of other stuff, this problem remains.

What i get now is a pop-up box labelled '16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem'. The wording inside the box reads

taskeng.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:de5 IP:0212 OP:63 6b 65 64 20 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

I've trawled through the Task Scheduler but can find nothing remotely like this.

Any ideas?!

Cheers,
Alfy

WinUpdate .... (OY!)

Oh, how I hate WinUpdate!!!

Usually it works .... sorta. But I've had some big problems in the past and I've read enough other horror stories to make my eyes cringe.

So, I put it off and put it off .... which probably doesn't help. But tonight I bit the bullet and let it run. There were only 10 this time. Seemed to be going fine, but ended up with two failed. Don't know if they matter or not, or if I should try them again. Thing is, to my knowledge, I don't have Visual C++ unless it's built in to Win 7 somehow.

Windows will not recognize my smartphone

From the start of connecting my LG G3 to my Windows 7 pro 64bit computer I could not get windows to recognize the phone. In the device manager I saw a driver named VS985 4G. Querying this driver returned "Windows cannot initialize the driver for this hardware (code 37)".

I deleted the driver and connected the phone again. The system automatically reinstalled the same driver and everything worked again, until the next time I tried to reconnect the phone to upload.

It worked that way for some months, then recently when I tried to delete & reinstall the driver it installed a driver named MTP USB device, returned the dialog "Driver Not Successfully Installed" and the device manager reported "Device cannot start (code 10)".

So I next went to the LG site and manually downloaded the driver I entered as VS985 4G. Installed it and again the device manager identifies it a LGE Android MTP device, with the same code 10 error.

I cannot get past this. I tried a system restore but because of limited restore space I couldn't go back more than 2 weeks, and that didn't help. Solution?

Browser Problem Return After Clean Install

I was having problems with all my browsers stalling and not responding. I replace the motherboard and memory, formatted the C drive and did a clean install Win7 64. At first IE and FireFox were working, I tried installing Brave, but it stalled, so I uninstalled it. I tried installing Chrome, but it stalled too. I uninstalled that. After that Firefox and IE started stalling, just as it was before I formatted. I haven't begun to put all my software back, just the basics so far ... Java, Flash player, Adobe Reader, Teamview, Shockwave, Silverlight, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Comodo, the drivers for the mobo and the graphic card. And Win7 manager which I tried uninstalling to see if it would solve the problem since that was the last program I installed before the browsers when out. How could this problem come back after a new motherboard and clean install:banghead::nonono: This is my i7 machine I am working on.

Is it possible to upgrade this to 64 bit? As you can see, it's all legit.

No voice input on headset

Hi everyone,

I hope this is the right subforum, wasn't sure if this belongs here or to Soundcard/Hardware. If yes, please move. :)

Since a few weeks I have had problems with my microphones and the front panel (with sound & usb) of my PC fried itself. To remedy that I bought a USB soundcard adapter (see here). I have connected this to my PC and tried both a normal headset and a iPhone headphones (both of which work on a different PC/laptop). When trying them on this PC, while normal sound works, there's no voice input.

Here's some more info:

- I use Windows 7
- I disconnected all other audio hardware in device manager, the only thing left in "Recording Devices" is the USB-connected device
- In the "recording tab" the bars stay gray and don't change/turn green when I speak into the microphone
- I have checked the settings of the microphone, volume is at 100 and not muted

At this point I am not sure what else I can do and haven't found anything useful from Google. Would really appreciate if anyone can advice.

Thanks!

My keyboard & mouse do not work on a ASUS M32 PC w/ a Win 7 Repair Disc

$

I have an Asus M32 series computer with Windows 7-64 bit OS. I have created a Windows Repair Disc just in case anything goes wrong with the system.
I wish to test it now, but the mouse and keyboard do not work when I boot from this Windows repair disc. I also tried a Windows 7 install disc (that wasn't installed to this computer) but the mouse and keyboard wouldn't work either.

I have tried the USB ports in the back and front and none of them allow the keyboard and mouse to work. I read some general information about enabling the “legacy USB” in a BIOS but I could not locate it in this BIOS.

Does anyone have an idea or even a separate free solution to create a System Image if I ever need to recover the whole system. My data is on a separate partition. By the way I am going to place the System Image backup on a 128GB USB thumb drive.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Need help again on lost files

A while back I posted about loosing files after I had a guy install Windows 7 on an old desk top. The files were on a second hard drive. Several of you suggested recovery software. I tried them all and got sidetracked and dropped it.

I came back in between then and now and the trial period on one had expired and I uninstalled it. I can’t remember the name. I’ve searched for my old post, but it is gone. I’d like to try that program again.

The ones I remember are EaseUS Data Recovery, Recuva, and Get Data Back. If any of you have suggestions that might be the one I’m looking for I would appreciate it.

Unable to install OTF and TTF font files

Hi guys

Today I downloaded a bunch of fonts, most of which fail to install with a "Does not appear to be a valid font" error. In Explorer, these particular files show in green, which I thought indicated Mac only. Yet I thought OTF and TTF were cross-compatible, or at least suitable for Win 7.

Some of these I purchased as part of a bundle: https://www.pixelsurplus.com/product...t-font-bundle/

The other one that fails is available here: https://www.pixelsurplus.com/product...ettering-font/

Any help appreciated as the IT bods I've run this past are stumped.

TIA

My AOL won't open up.

Hi,
I have a laptop with Windows 7 on it. About two months ago I downloaded a program, and after that, AOL wouldn't open. I had to do system restore to go back in time, to get it to open. Every now and then, I still have to go back in time to get it to open. I did delete the program that caused this problem, but obviously something is still in my computer. I just did a restore, and my AOL won't open. I probably have to go back more in time, but it was working today, although, it was already open when I turned on the computer. Aol.exe is open in the processes, although, aol fast start isn't, which should be. I use the Avast Free Anti-Virus, which is up to date. Please let me know what you want me to do, hijack log, etc..., and I'll do it.
Thank you.
