Root folders are Read-Only in C: | Cannot install programs such as Skype

0

Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

Story: I had a problem yesterday with the computer where I had to unplug one of the Sata cables of the c:drive and move it onto another slot. It changed my secondary drive to G: and my C: stayed the same.

Today I noticed that most of the root folders such as C:\Windows, Program Files (x86), Program Files, Users are all read-only. I believe I have taken control of most of the folders but the read-only never seems to go away:

I'm not sure if it needs to go away, if it does I just wanted to give that as some of the context for the problem.

Problem: I'm trying to reinstall Skype as it seems to have been corrupted during the drive change. I have used Revo Uninstaller to attempt to delete the registry files under an advanced scan and it seems to have went fine.

Now I'm trying to reinstall Skype and I get the following error:

The previous error was 1603 and it seems to have went and changed to 1610 now and I am completely stumped. It may have to do with permissions, so I gave some context above.

Skype Portable does not work either even running as administrator. I see the two .exe run and then disappear from task manager as if they auto-closed.

G'Day,
Sorry to bother you with what is probably a simple job but I can't find a way to do it. I have some folders of saved pix that are asp files and I want to change them to jpg files without having to do them one at a time using Paint. Is there a simple method?
Thanks in advance,
Kobo

Having some issues with my Windows 7 Ultimate install

I am noticing some system slow-down and stuttering, especially when streaming video and using the internet. I have ruled out the ISP/router, etc. already. This just started happening in the past week, and this install is only about a month old with brand new SSD.

Could it be related to a couple of windows updates that refuse to install? I'm running SP1. I was thinking of getting those failed updates via a 3rd-party repository like WHDownloader, what do you guys think of such things? I haven't tried them before but it sounds handy and has a high rating from users it would seem.

How to add "Find" (Ctrl+F) to the context menu?

Hi!

I want to add "Find" (Ctrl+F) (Menu bar > Edit > Find) to the right-click context
menu of my Windows 7 Pro pc.

I want to be able to select some text, right-click on that selected text, and have
"Find" appear as one of the options to then left-click on.

And after I've left-clicked on "Find" in that context menu I want the actual "Find"
popup window to appear (i.e., what happens when you press the Ctrl+F keys)
with my selected text pasted into its search window and the "found" numbers of text
indicated and highlighted in the body of the page. All I need do then is to click the
up or down caret, or press enter, to move the focus to the next found text.

My goal is eliminate the tedious and repetitious doubleclicking to select text, then
keying Ctrl+C to copy the selected text, Ctrl+F to open Find, and Ctrl+V to paste
my copied text into Find's search field.

I'm using Firefox 56.0 (64-bit).

Anyone know of a way to accomplish adding "Find" to the context menu?

Thanks!

Auto Correct with Words 2007

Hello I have researched this problem for sometimes now and found no answer for it.
Autocorrect used to work very well for me with the same set up I'm using now. But suddenly the Auto correct stopped doing its job properly and instead of presenting me a list of appropriate well spelt words for me to choose from it gave me and gives me the same list regardless of the word I'm trying to get a correct automatic correction for.
As the saying says a pictures is worth thousand words so I took a picture of it that I will try to post here. And hope someone knows what is happening... And here it is:
On the .jpg you will see the word 'satay' that is not recognised so with red underline. Then you'll see my pointer on the orange "AutoCorrect" that triggers the list on its left. This list is what I get all the time now.
I went to all the settings of AutoCorrect in the 'options' menu; at least I think I did but it does not change anything to this situation!
Before it was perfect and even worked with a couple of other languages as well (French and Spanish) With French is very important for me as I can have all the accented words automatically added with this function for my next use of a particular accented word. So I dearly miss it.

Users on shared drive

I have a desktop running Windows 7, on which drive D is my all-purpose storage array. I also have a laptop running Windows 10 where I do most of my work.

I have the D drive on the desktop set up as a shared folder. When I go into the Permissions/Users settings on the sharing screen, it only gives the option for "Everyone," which seems insecure. I have it set up so that you have to enter the username and password for my desktop to access the folder, but is it possible to have it so that my desktop will only accept connections from my laptop through the Users screen?

windows 7 Sept security pack error code 80004005

I have been having a problem downloading Windows 7 Sept 2017 Monthly Security update. Download fails with error code 80004005. After googling the error code, I tried installing patch which led me to tech utilities. After buying in and running scan successfully, I tried downloading update again and still failed. It is very annoying; in that, if I shut down computer and then when I start up again it automatically tries to download update even though I set update settings to manual update. Tech Utilities was a waste of money, lessons learned. Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated. Paul

files that can'ta be deleted

Windows Explorer shows under my User name the folder AppData with the subfolder Local which contains a subfolder Temp. This folder contains 321 files and 46 folders, none of which can be deleted. What is protecting these files from being deleted? I even tried deleting them using DOS commands.

Getting IDM expired pop up when it is deleted

I made a TSF user to ask about this which have troubled me for a while now.

So I have had IDM (Internet Download Manager) on my computer and I have been getting pop ups about it being expired. So I had deleted it but the pop ups continued popping up for me.

This happens when I was going to download something, which stopped me from starting the download, aswell as when I have started up the computer. So to download something that gets blocked by IDM I have to go on a different browser which has gotten quite annoying to do.

So if someone knows a solution to getting rid of the damned pop up and not blocking my downloads, I would be really happy.

os 7; cannot open links within a website or email. checked each browser (happens in all); checked blockers etc.; disabled adaware, virus, malware, everything to diagnose, and cant figure it out.

one tech (not yall, told me not to go "looking for problems", or get "into the computer", basically got the feeling he was telling me it was my fault somehow, because when I picked up the computer after he "repaired", it was working just fine. this started a week or so after I brought home.

also, its doing "crash dumps", dont know why; and when doing shutdown, its giving me a small box with something about "bit defender scanner isnt working" or some such.

All in my head? hmmm....not stupid, but sure would like to know what I'm doing wrong, or not doing!! any ideas? thanks guys!

After 'starting Windows' blank screen, 8 hours

Hi,

Last night when doodling on the internet, specifically chatting with some friends, my computer stopped. I have two monitors, one went black/blank no error message and the other appeared as colored 'snow'. I rebooted the computer, got a good post, one beep, and things were fine up to the Microsoft logo and the starting Windows message. Then nothing happened. I repeated this process three times, the third time I left it for 8 hours while I sleep. I woke up and it was still black with no error message. I can start the system in safe mode, I can see pictures and all that in safe mode even with networking but cannot completely run in normal mode. I did a repair, a restore from safe mode but nothing worked. I'm not sure if this is in fact hardware such as my hard drive, my gpu or just needs a clean Windows install.
Any advice please?

Windows 7 lost all USB

My Winddows 7 HP PC crashed a few times...used IOLO System Mechanic and cleaned and optomised using the auto funtions of the application.
All seemed OK for a few days... then it crashed again. Umnplugged from the AC power wall socket..... restarted... came up with the options screen Safe Mode etc,. opted for normal start up. Eventually it started up ..but I found that all the USB connections did not function. using the control panel I found in the list of USB's two showed and not recognized. My lack of know how led me to think that if I deleted these... re-booted the system would automatically repair them a add back to the list.... WRONG... they were still there and still no USB - without them I cannot get online and try any options or try downloads. Its an OEM install and I dont have Win 7 disks...so when all else failed and I opted to return to factory or whatever the basic system is on drive D.
Now its worse because - it corrupted the boot up and just about all I can do is start in Safe mode ...and do little else.

Is there a way to rescue my PC or is it junk?

Redirect problem

When using Firefox, in the past few days, I have picked up a virus or malware that redirects my attempt to move to a different site or URL. I have Malware Bytes and Norton protecting my system. Both are current and up to date. Firefox does block the redirect from loading but it is a pain to close the new window and then have it redirect again next time I try to open another window.

Neither a full scan by Malware Bytes or Norton have found this problem program.

The redirect may be to any different site but it is always for ads on the few I have opened to see what they were.

The current redirect URL is frshdmn.cxm for (.com)

Any ideas where this crap program may be hiding?
