I have custom shortcuts on the Desktop and Quick Launch toolbar to open Windows Explorer (Win 7) to a specific directory. The following has worked properly for years and still does.
C:\windows\explorer.exe /root,G:\SW
After opening the Windows Explorer successfully using the above, when I click in that window to open a directory containing .jpgs, mp3s, or some other media files, Windows Explorer then automatically opens a second window.
Windows Explorer does not open a second window unless such files are present in the directory. It's driving me crazy. This happens if the directory I click on (after opening the original window using the shortcut) is on the hard drive or external media, such as a flash drive or SD card.
I have narrowed the problem down to my custom shortcut, because it happens only after opening Windows Explorer with the custom shortcut above. It does NOT open new windows if I right click on the Start button and open Windows Explorer nor if I use my custom shortcut below which opens to Computer.
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
I have double-checked that Windows Explorer is still set to open in same window in Windows Explorer.
I've tried scanning the system as Admin at the command prompt for problems and it found none.
No luck with either. And I think those solutions were not related to my specific problem, anyway.
I've been looking for other solutions and hesitate to tinker with the registry.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
