Windows Explorer custom shortcut problem

$
0
0
I have custom shortcuts on the Desktop and Quick Launch toolbar to open Windows Explorer (Win 7) to a specific directory. The following has worked properly for years and still does.

C:\windows\explorer.exe /root,G:\SW

After opening the Windows Explorer successfully using the above, when I click in that window to open a directory containing .jpgs, mp3s, or some other media files, Windows Explorer then automatically opens a second window.

Windows Explorer does not open a second window unless such files are present in the directory. It's driving me crazy. This happens if the directory I click on (after opening the original window using the shortcut) is on the hard drive or external media, such as a flash drive or SD card.

I have narrowed the problem down to my custom shortcut, because it happens only after opening Windows Explorer with the custom shortcut above. It does NOT open new windows if I right click on the Start button and open Windows Explorer nor if I use my custom shortcut below which opens to Computer.

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

I have double-checked that Windows Explorer is still set to open in same window in Windows Explorer.

I've tried scanning the system as Admin at the command prompt for problems and it found none.

No luck with either. And I think those solutions were not related to my specific problem, anyway.

I've been looking for other solutions and hesitate to tinker with the registry.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Icon cache refreshes itself

Hi

I am facing an issue. It's very strange as it shouldn't happen. I am using windows 7 and icon thumbnails refresh itself after sometime. I don't change themes or reset icon cache. However i have changed the registry settings for increasing the icon cache from default of 512 to 4096 by creating a new string value in the path "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer" with the name of "Max Cached Icons".

I thought i have increased the icon cache and it shouldn't refresh itself at all. I did't choose to put 8192 (double of 4096) because i read that it makes problems.

Can anyone help me in this regards?

Safe mode

Hello guys.. Been a little long

Once I turned on computer and it showed some weird things.. like the 0 until 100% thing... lots of files you know? I don't know how to explain, " 43928984 of 30294023149032490 files"? I don't really know how to express myself since I forgot what it was there, it's just something that shows up sometimes.. at least from experience..

And it wouldn't go past 41%(or some other number close), I waited 2 hours... Then only way to start computer would be safe mode, but now I wanted to get out of it, after like 8 months really.. And I don't know how to, it just doesn't work, on msconfig the safe mode option is unchecked... Any way to go back or should I just reinstall windows? IS that the best option?

I saw in a post somewhere in other forum that F8 at boot would make it go to advanced options but it did not, not sure if it's F12 or any other button close. Thanks!!

So I bought an used Audio-Technica AT-LP 120-USB Turntable and my USB drive won't recognize the device. I have disabled all USB's in Device Manager and waited for a clean boot up, but still nothing. Bought a brand new USB 2.0 A to B Cable, to see if it was the cable. I am getting discouraged and frustrated :banghead: and was hoping that maybe some of you could provide me with some suggestions. Thank you in advance and Merry Christmas.

Kill all proccess before shutdown

Hi, people

I have Windows 7 and a program (Apptizer) that it has sometimes a "bad close" when I shutdown Windows in "normal mode".

Maybe I need a batch to clone all the tasks. I try with:

Code:

C:\Windows\System32\taskkill.exe /F /FI "PID gt 0"
but I get 'Blue Screen of Death'.

It's a pity that the program "Close all windows" (CloseAll - Close All Windows with Just a Single Click: Select Apps You Want to Close and click OK - NTWind Software) only close windows and it doesn't close tasks in system tray.

laptop very, very slow to startup programs

Hello TSF.

My laptop running Windows 7 has been extremely sluggish for a few weeks now. It takes a lot longer than usual to start up from Sleep or Shutdown. Opening a browser or Word or other applications can take several minutes. After the system has been running for awhile, things work a bit better.

The main problem is that programs/applications are very slow to start up, and some won't start up at all. The laptop is about 5-6 years old, a Lenovo Thinkpad.

I have just recently been through the process of looking for malware with TSF, and they said it is not an issue with malware. I ran chkdsk and degrag and disk cleanup, etc last week, but it hasn't made a difference.

Is there anything else that can be done?

Windows cannot access the specified... (bit long)

Hello all and Happy New Year

I have suddenly started receiving the message
Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file.
You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.
I have tried all of the suggestions that I can find, eg. permissions (full access granted), file blocked (no), file does not exist (it does), but nothing helps.
I then tried installing a hidden object game that I was playing until
yesterday with no problem but uninstalled when finished. I received
exactly the same message when I tried to run it. There have been no
changes at all to my system, no extra programs added except for the
hidden object games.
I am an administrator.
I have of course done a virus check with negative results.
The only thing that I can think of is using Revo Uninstaller to
uninstall the program. Is it possible that this could have caused the
problem ?

I have been doing some further digging.

New .exe on desktop. Double click I get the permissions message with the filename in the title bar.
If, however, I copy the shortcut to Nexus dock and try running it it actually runs, with no permissions error.

Double click or Open with on the following files leads to the permissions message.
.jpg
.zip - right click, extract to get message (Bandizip)
.jpg, .png, .psd
.ppp - file from Serif PagePlus
.dpp - file from Serif DrawPlus
.doc, .wmf, .tif
.avi

These are OK
.txt ok, .epub, .pdf
.mp3, .mp4, .mkv, .mpg ok

I then received the same message from Control Panel items, so I looked further (all resulted in permissions message with program name in title bar except where noted)

file system isnt recognizing some 10gb

$

hello,
have an old Windows 7 desktop that is way past its prime. In the course of doing some backups prior to replacing it, I noticed that, without my deleting anything, it spontaneously went from 191gb free (drive around 1 tb) to 205 or so gb free.
I have had the impression before that something about the file indexing (sorry probably not the correct term) isn't right. For example, when I do a search, it often will not find a file even when I can see that a file with that search term is in the folder I'm searching.

The last time I tried to recover data from a hard drive by using an external service, it was extremely expensive. Do you think maybe I could make a system image and then , on a new Windows 10 computer, search off that to try to find the missing files? Or any other ideas?

I have no idea what is missing, which makes it much much harder.

Please move to whatever part of the forum you think might be best, and thank you!

Boot Help

I had to turn the power off at the breaker box to do some electrical work so I shut my computer down. That message popped saying it was installing updates, don't turn the power off. So I waited until the computer shut itself down. Now when I turn it on it goes to a screen that says "Windows Error Recovery. Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer."

I don't have a Windows installation disc. The original OS was Vista, (I believe). It was upgraded to Windows 7, but I never got any discs.

Any help is appreciated. I know I need a new one - just wasn't planning on it now

Well I have a Compaq precario cq57-489ca

I format the HD to remove win 7 and fix some useless software that was in it and install Ubuntu. After I try it I remove it and put back win 7.

But now I have no internet on it, no cable and no wifi. I when to HP to download the drivers for the wifi and cable/lan and install them. But even after that and following the little instruction (reboot) still no internet. I try to fix the problem but windows don't detect any signal wifi (the wifi wont turn on) so I have download "previous" driver and I will put them on the laptop and install them, but I don't think that it will fix that problem.

Are there any PC monitor goggles or glasses?

$

It seems that it would sometimes be convenient if there are some types of goggles we could hook up to a computer to do some quick tasks without having to have a monitor, especially if we have more than one computer and are just using one of them to back things up, or any similar situations. So far all I've been able to find are some expensive types for gaming, and some that look like they only work with a cell phone. Does what I'm looking for not exist?
