Very slow CPU (low clock speed)

$

For the past couple of weeks, i've had absolutely terrible performance which was confusingly returned to normal by running games. With some further investigation I found out that Razer Cortex's Game Booster was the reason for the performance increase, but I still have yet to find out why my PC is so abnormally slow without it.

Without the Boost, I noticed I was getting particularly high cpu usage for normal windows processes, like svchost.exe and MsMpEng.exe.

Diagnostics from Cortex:

No Boost

Boost

The largest difference I can tell between the 2 is that without the boost, my cpu runs at a clock speed of 792MHz instead of 3600MHz... that's a 78% slower cpu!

I would greatly appreciate it if someone can help me identify why my cpu is sleeping on the job.

Sister had problems getting online, etc. So chose to restore to Factory install. She had nothing to backup, just plays games, go to FB, has an email and that's about it.
Factory reinstall has been running since about 7pm last night 7/10. It is currently 10:30am 7/11. It just keeps running.
Her laptop is identical to mine. Windows 7, 6GB DD3 memory, 500 GB HD
-- Is there something we should or can do?
Her screen just says "Setup is starting services "

Display problems Lenovo S400 Thinkpad

Hi all,
I have an now old Lenovo S400 Thinkpad running Windows 7 (Vista?). The screen has gone and the batteries need replacing so I have decided not to repair. However the laptop has been handy as a second laptop for watching movies etc by plugging it into my Tv and power permanently. One problem has been that the menu bar on top and side scroll bar dont fit on the TV screen. Recently I was unfortunately fiddling with the display settings to get a better fit on the TV screen and now the screen only shows the desktop background....no icons or mouse. So now I cant do anything with it??!!

I did some online research and tried the keyboard shortcuts WIN + p and also WIN + x but to no avail. I did read some online articles that mentioned a shortcut bug in windows 7 and that I needed to download a fix but of course I cant do anything as no laptop screen at all only grey streaks and TV screen only shows background so no normal controls.

Is there some way an aged computer illiterate fiddler like myself can rectify this? I dont yet want to throw this laptop out as it was working perfectly for what I wanted before I stupidly started fiddling?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Storage HDD partition fail

I have a 1 TB Hitachi Storage drive that was around 6months old and was working perfectly, filled up to about 80% capacity with pictures/files. Booted up my PC the next morning and windows 7 now displays it as a 32 MB volume that needs formatted. Ive included a picture of diskmanger and my computer below

Link : https://ibb.co/hwJLRy

I should also point out that the same morning i had a page file error which was caused by a faulty CMOS battery which was replaced with no problems.. i was not using any sort of motherboard options with the harddrive it was just plugged in as a secondary drive alongside my SDD and two other storage drives.. all of which had no problems before, during or after the CMOS fail.

Any help would be much appreciated i have googled for hours and tried various free recovery options with no luck.. none of them can detect the 1TB partition that is "fingers crossed" still inside the drive somewhere!

Ok y'all my youngest son built the computer I use now, it replaces my antique E machine T5082
this computer is a Frankenstein with 6 working fans and a GA-970A-D3P mother board the USB 2.0 ports work fine, but the USB 3.0 ports do not work at all, I have tried looking and downloading, after the tries ( 3s the charm ) I figure its time to ask the experts in the computer field.

So.....how do I make the USB 3.0 ports work along with the USB2.0 ports on this computer?

The printer queue is stuck with a spinning cursor and 3 items in it. I can not select any of the items as they don't show in the window. I use Task Manager to end the tasks however when I restart the problem is still there.

I included a Speccy file of my system and screenshot of the issue. Thanks again for your time and help.

Windows fluttering (not responding and responding 100x a second) and other issues

$

Hi,

A while back (years) I did a full reinstall of windows from a very old disk (did all updates and drivers after etc), and ever since then I've been faced with a plethora of really weird issues. Some of them are quite difficult to describe but i'll do my best. All of these problems are completely random and do not seem to be program-specific
  • Sometimes a window will flutter, literally flash in and out of the task bar. This is always a window I have clicked on/am working in, and during these moments the window will get a border which reads "program not responding..." - and that border flutters in and out of existence many times a second. It's very weird. Often I can "snap it out" of the problem by clicking on the window excessively, which seems to force the program back into response.
  • If i'm playing a game in full-screen mode, clicking with my left-mouse click will often pull through the game into my desktop (minimising the game as it does). The game will then be unable to alt-tab back in. This happens regardless of any background tasks running on desktop. If i've got Chrome up "behind" the game, I'll click to chrome, if i've got desktop on its own i'll just click through to that. Happens with and without antivirus and passive programs like Displayfusion/Voiceattack etc.

Those are two of the problems easiest to explain. There are a couple of others from time to time but that's the main issue. I have a feeling I might have messed up a registry file or something a long time ago and I'm just getting sick and tired of all the weird behaviour.

Any help would be vastly appreciated.

Here's my speccy data as requested on the sticky:

Acronis File Name Conventions

I've been using Acronis WD versions since my troubles here a few years back. I'm wondering about deleting old backups to free up space on the EHD. But I'm wondering about the file names and if they're somehow sequential backups even though I don't have that set.

Disregard the one today and the one on the 12th with smaller file sizes. The backups failed before completion due to a USB issue.

Why am I seeing .2, .3, .4 at the end of the file names and what can be safely deleted without affecting any possible restoration? :hide:

I have windows 7 32bit. I was heavily considering switching to 64bit. Since supposebly is faster. But should I? Ive read that if you have 2 ram which I do is not worth it. Also I have dual processor. Im also not sure how easily or hard the transaction is.

Im looking to back up my windows 7 as it is for emergency reasons.

How can I do back up it in the state it is so if I run into problems I can restore how it is? I hope it doesnt consume much space to do this. I know windows 7 has a back up option but dont really know how to use it and if it is for this exact same reason. I think what I'm going to do is save it and post it in a cloud in case I ever run into issues.

In a seperate issue I'd like to back up this windows in case I run into problems and I just need to replace a single file so I can restore that faulty single file.

Windows 7 / 10 File Explorer says GoFlex Home has no files

Here’s the problem. For some reason under both Windows 7 (desktop) and Windows 10 (laptop) explorer sreturns a message there are no files. I’ve had no problems for years and now in the past month or two I get that message. Seagate has been no help at all, nor has their community. I can access the unit just fine thru dashboard. Reset the unit has had no effect. Any ideas why? Would Arch Linux somehow let me see the unit thru Windows? I’d really like to to store and retrieve files to it. The actual hard drive is only a year old as the original died. The replacement was another Seagate 4TB HDD.
Thank you much.

Alt tab image freezing

So when I alt tab, this sometimes happens. The image from the previous tab sticks in that same location and anything I click in that area is unresponsive. It also happens when I scroll sometimes. My cpu is at like 10% usage, ram at 25% so I dont see it as being an issue in that department. Thank you for any help.

In this image, I was in firefox and tabbed to paint and that little section was frozen for like 8 seconds.

stuck on 35% windows updates

toshiba satellite laptop, running win7sp1 home edition; updated windows security, now it's stuck on 35% loading and wont do anything....its been on that for over 8 hrs!!! when I shut it down, restart, it picks up same spot, same old situation. even shut down and took out battery, same thing. cant do anything, what have I done?

cant even get to the point to restore before that point, or even to wipe disk and reinstall os; might be due anyway, because it seems to have a virus/malware or some kind of problem (before updates, ran all security, nothing showed anything) but its acting weird..i.e. when I click on something I saved, it might open, and if so, then it puts new tabs up and just keeps adding more, never opens the tabs.....

sounds sick, it is about 5-7 yrs old, dont use much anymore. thanks for suggestions.

Alt+R Disabling Mouse?

$

I recently got back into a game where I need a large number of hotkeys, and one of the ones that's convenient to bind is Alt+R. However, hitting this combination (and I wonder about my other Alt combos too now) disables my mouse. Hitting it again fixes this of course, but that temporary loss of control is highly inconvenient.

I'm running Windows 7 and have a Radeon R9 graphics card.

I've searched the forums and 'net and I haven't been able to find anything that'll help me disable this hotkey.

Anyone know about this?

Stop: C000021a {Fatal System Error}

Hi,

Need help plz.

Bought a new lenovo 320 a couple of months ago and trying to set up windows 7 from an original CD.

It all works fine loading the files and when the windows logo colours are getting together, it fails with the following message on a blue screen.

"Stop: C000021a {Fatal System Error}
The initial system process or system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000 (0xc0000001 0x001003f0)
The system has been shut down"

I tried the last good known configuration (advanced), and the same happened.
Please note this is the 1st time I try to install Windows OS on that laptop.
I am not sure whether it is a software or hardware issue. Any idea?

BR,

PC hibernates due to "critical battery level" while 100% charged and on AC power

Shortly after I got my current UPS, a Back UPS Pro 1500, every few weeks or so I will hear the UPS make a click and instantly my PC screen turns off and the PC HD activity light turns solid on for 1-2 minutes after which the computer fully powers itself off.

When I turn it back on it says (paraphrasing) "Windows saved your session to disk because battery reached critical levels".

However, every single time this has happened there was no power failure or interruption and the battery level stays at 100%. It's like the UPS is sending a fake "SHUT DOWN ASAP I'M ABOUT TO DIE!!!" to the PC.

I just looked around my power settings and changed some numbers related to battery level actions in the hope this helps.

APC tell me to do a "brain dead" procedure but it involves shutting everything down and unplugging the battery, my UPS is in such a confined space that doing something so simple would be an absolute chore so I'm not tempted to try especially when it's not sure or even likely to solve the issue. Is this "brain dead" thing worth trying?

I know unplugging the USB cable would prevent the UPS to tell the PC to shut down, but it would also prevent it from telling the PC to shut down in the unlikely event of an actual power failure. Come to think of it my PC would shut down far less often if I did unplug the USB cable, but I'd lose all my work in case of a real power failure.

HDD shows full, but its not?

I have had this problem once before and forgot how I fixed it. The HDD states that its 95% full, however, it's not. I ran disk defrag and the program said its 86% fragged? after the defrag it is now only 64% fragged? I have tried everything to remove possible errors as the drive is only about 25% actually full. Is my drive failing?
