Live Mail and Verizon

I am setting up Windows Live Mail with a Verizon email address. I am unable to connect to the server most of the time. When I do get connected, bottom right says ERROR Working online. When I try to send mail I get the error -
The connection to the server has failed.

I was trying the different port numbers. Not sure what goes where.
Dell Inspiron 660 Windows 7
Have tried clicking on SSL for out and ingoing and it says my server doesn't use SSL
Have tried contacting Verizon and they say they no longer support Live mail
