I am having a problem with my Dell XPS M1210 (very old laptop, but I have updated RAM and HDD over time to keep it relevant). I am having intermittent slowdown issues where basically the computer slows to a crawl, and becomes completely unusable. For example, yesterday I came to wake up my computer from sleep mode, and it took about 10 minutes just to get to the desktop and was extremely slow. Basic tasks such as opening Word or Google Chrome took minutes. I tried to open Google.com and it tried loading for minutes and then just gave up loading it. I opened Windows Explorer and at the top, the long bar that indicates progress by turning green was moving VERY slowly, and it took minutes to load Windows Explorer. I am sure this is not a network issue, as my iPad and iPhone can load pages instantly at the same time I experience these issues on my PC. I was able to fix this by rebooting my computer, and it was back to normal. The other day, I installed a new antivirus program (uninstalling my old one) and got a serious slowdown. I assumed the new software was causing a conflict so I uninstalled and went back to my old antivirus. Rebooted with the old one reinstalled and it was still slow. Messed around for a while trying to figure out why it was going so slow but eventually I gave up and turned off the computer. (Next day turned it on and it was fine). I am trying to find out what sorts of things could be the problem and how I could diagnose this issue? Is this a software or a hardware problem? What should I check for and how can I go about checking this? I am not a complete novice to PCs, but I probably don't know as much as most of you, so keeping it to "lamence terms" would probably be best! Thank you for any help you can provide.
