haunted laptop (weird, random errors)

This is an intermittent fault, only happens sometimes. Some symptoms:

- at the worst, any dialogue box I click on will scroll automatically down to the bottom. So if I go to the gmail inbox, for instance, it reacts as if I've dragged the scroll-wheel, very quickly, right to the bottom of the page.

- in uTorrent it seems to grab one item and move it down the page, one click at a time. Not always, but most of the time.

- if I left-click to perform an action it'll start to perform that function, then abort: takes about 1/4 second. (This is rare, and usually means a full-on crash is on the way.)

In some cases I have to shut down the whole system. Seems random, I can go for days or weeks w/o the worst of these issues, but the uTorrent thing is pretty much constant.

Also notice very long rendering times: rendered an audio track on a friend's (similar) PC, and it went at 100x real-time. On my machine I'm lucky to get 2x, don't know if that's a related issue?

Last time I saw behavior like this, the HD had about a month left to live. Near as I can tell, cheapo laptops scrimp out on HDs, and this one is a Western Dynamics (I know . . . ) Ran the WD Data Lifeguard test and passed the SMART test np, but who knows?
