Trouble playing games on a dual screen set up

Basicly I have an HD tv (connected via HDMI) and an HD monitor (though it's connected via VGA).

I set the HDTV to the primary and try to run a full screen game, whilst I keep Trillian open on the second monitor. I basically want it so I can play on my TV, and turn my head to see the chat window.

Except, when I run the full screen game on my HDTV, both monitors flicker (as they always do when a game loads) but any open window I have on the second monitor disappears. if I use alt tab to get it back, the game goes away and I get the chat window on my TV, not the auxiliary monitor. This happens EVEN WITH GAMES that are set to the SAME resolution as the HDTV and monitor.

How do I stop this?

I'm running Windows 7 with an AMD Radeon HD 6700 series card. I also have tried using the free version of DisplayFusion and it did not help.

I've tried it on newer games like Portal 2 and older games like old C&C games.

First, I just used the windows 7 controls to configure it and selected extend display. I then enabled the same settings on Catalyst.

At one point, I created an Eyefinity display group and that STRETCHED my display, as I thought it would, but didn't fix it.

I think the flickering is irrelevant, my screen has always blanked for a second on every computer I've ever had before running a full screen game.

EDIT: I tried reversing it, using the mintor for the game (priamry) and the HDTV as the auxiliary monitor for the chat window. Same thing.
