[SOLVED] Losing USB ports: strange

Win 7 SP1. Gigabyte GA P55a UD3R MoBo

Problem:
I have just discovered that I have lost partial use of my USB ports.

Situation:
If I go to Device Mangler, there is a long list of USB ports shown under USB Controllers: they are all shown as working correctly. However there is also a USB Controller shown under Other Devices, and that has an exclamation mark against it. It says under Properties that the driver is not installed. Trying to reinstall/upgrade the driver fails (Windows cannot find the driver). I am not connected to the Net on the problem machine. I would prefer to keep it that way, if I can, but I realise that if I have no way to use a thumb drive, I may be caught. I could use a CD of course.

I tried the Giga site for downloads, but what was available did not seem to apply.

Any help appreciated.

Symptoms:
- I have a wireless USB mouse and KB combo, which work after boot up until I remove the dongle, then they don't upon reinserting the dongle.
- the keyboard works before Windows boots, for instance to allow choice if Win does not shut down normally and I have to choose whether to start normally etc.

- I have a USB thumb drive that will light up if inserted before reboot, but is not seen by Windows: if I then remove and reinsert it, it is no longer even lit up.
