I ran into a problem with my girlfriends HP laptop. I tried to perform a CHKDSK /r a few days ago in which it would not start. I was like huh what is going on? I tried Safe Mode, everything I could think of. I found a solution from another source in which I want to share on there.
First step is the Safe Mode work around
Go to Start type in msconfig proceed to boot then select Minimal Boot then click on OK. Schedule your chkdsk if chkdsk still will not run proceed to step 2.
Restart by God's might chkdsk will run.
Set Msconfig/boot (Step 1) to revert back to normal boot.
If chkdsk works this time you're done, if not go to step 2.
Step 2. Reset Chkdsk BootExecute
1. Download the attachment below click save as save the file to your desktop
2. Unzip the zip file then, Right click on the .reg file then click Merge
3. Click Run button for Security warning pop up
4. Click continue (UAC), Yes, then Ok
Step 3. Run Sfc /Scannow
1. Open Command Prompt as an Administrator
2. At the commend prompt type in sfc /scannow
Step 4. Take Ownership of the Autochk.exe file.
1. Be sure that you already have ran a SFC /scannow from STEP THREE above to see verify that the autochk.exe file was found to be corrupted first in the sfcdetails.txt file. If it's not, then you do not need to do STEP FOUR.
2. In Windows Explorer, go to C:\Windows\System32\autochk.exe. (See screenshot below)
3. Take ownership of the file autochk.exe at the C:\Windows\System32\autochk.exe location, and "Allow" your user account "Full Control" of it.
Step 5. Replace the Autochk.exe file
1. Have your Windows install cd or DVD handy.
2. Download 7zip file manager
3. Run 7zip file manager browser for the setup.wim file in your Windows dvd or cd.
4. Open either folder 1, 2, 3, 4. now open the Windows folder now system 32 locate the autochk.exe file now click on extract (Extract it to you desktop.
5. Now the autochk.exe file you just extracted to your desktop copy and paste it to this directory in Windows C:/Windows/System32 click copy and replace when asked. (Note you may have to take ownership of the autochk.exe file you have just extracted from your Windows cd/dvd and take full control of it then copy and paste it to the system32 directory)
Now schedule your chkdsk hopefully it works
This should work for all versions for Windows XP through 7 make sure you have your version dvd/cd for which version you have including 64bit or 32bit you have installed on your computer.
Hopefully this comes handy happy computing!
