Hello,
I have a HP Pavilion dm4 Laptop 1050 PC. with 4GB RAM , and Dual booted with Windows7 and Fedora 14 ( Linux). Windows 7 keeps hanging frequently after startup.
1) Today, after I reached the desktop screen , it just hangs, Nothing even repeatedly pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete works. Generally pressing it twice should restart the system , (or maybe that was XP) . I left my computer came back after some time, and found that it is still in the same condition. It was so bad, that the Display Clock on the taskbar was showing the same time for 40 minutes ! So I was forced to turn it off by pressing the power button.
2) Next time I turned it on , it asked me to run Safe Mode, I ran Safe mode and here perfectly no problems encountered. I then restarted Windows and everything worked fine.
3) Then I was working for some time, and suddenly the monitor goes blank for a few seconds and then my desktop reappears, A note on the sidebar informs me that
"Display driver AMD has crashed and it was successfully recovered ".
4) I ignore the message , open my browser and load a You tube video, and the machine hangs yet again. and I am forced to turn off the computer by pressing the power button. I was typing this query for Techsupprt, and now I am forced it to type it again, thanks to this stupid OS.
I ran WIndows Defender and it detected no virus, I have Avast on my Windows, but it also did not report any virus problems.
None of this stupid things happens in Fedora, so thus it has to be a problem with WIndows 7.
The simplest, but time consuming solution would be to reinstall WIndows 7 and then recover my Bootloader. But I want to explore other options before doing that, and keep that as a last resort option.
What else is possible ? Problem is that Windows is like a necessary evil, as I cannot play some of my computer games on Linux, and some softwares are released only for Windows or Mac.
Any troubleshooting steps would be most welcome.
