How Do I Improve Performance Windows 7 64 Bit

Hi;

I have an oldish system and have switched the OS to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit. Without spending money is there a way to limit certain resources to improve performance?

I am running an Abit ANM2-HD mobo with an Athlon 64x2 4000 2.1Ghz with 2GB Corsair OCZ Memory.
