Strange Vista Problem

Hey folkd,

I am trying to repair a mates laptop and am coming up against a brick wall, can i get some advice?

ok here goes...

Laptop running Windows Vista, SP1

loads up ok, when on desktop, explorer crashes in under 5 minutes, whether running any programs or not. Laptop will not restart in most cases, although has done on a handful of occassions, but again, crashes in under 5 mins.

Ran in safe mode with networking, loads ok around 60% of the time, or hangs whilkst loading files, crashes and then restarts.

Tried running sfc/scannow so far not managed to get it past verification stage (crashes anywhere between 19 - 32%) Tried doing this in safe mode with cmd/normal logon and last know good config. no result on any

I did manage to run malware antivirus on the system (using a CD) this found 53 viruses, including around 35 trojans! Managed to remove all of these and ran scan again, which seems clear. oh, will only run a quick scan, a full scan crashes system.

Tried to install and run Microsoft security essentials, but no luck installing it or upgrading.

Ran windows update, but again, it crashes before it completes.

I am not convinced that (at least one of the issues) may be windows installer, as unable to remove some programs, to try to scale back the system files (cant do a reinstall as pics etc are on there, but i cant get them off without it crashing!)

Does anyone have any advice for me please, anything obvious i am missing?

Thanks
