Windows 7 Black Screen with Underscore at boot.

Hello everyone. This is my first question, so my apologies if I do something wrong, or I don't know a specific thing.

Specs (from what I can remember) :

Laptop Model: Acer Aspire 9410
Graphics card: NVIDIA Geforce Go (cannot remember the exact number)
Processor: Intel Centrino Duo (cannot remember the hertz of the top of my head either)
Screen resolution: 1440x900 (17" widescreen)
Installed RAM: From what I can remember; somewhere around 4-5GB I believe.
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (not sure of SP)
1 Hard drive: Sata; 70GB

Onto the Question:

I have a laptop from about 2006 that I bought from a guy off of craig's list in 2011. (2006 being how old the laptop is, 2011 when I bought it)

It worked great until about last summer. My sister was on the laptop just checking her facebook as usual. The laptop randomly turned off. I turned it back on and when it booted, it was a black screen with a blinking underscore. I let it sit for about 20 minutes; no progress. I heard you can try the windows restore disk, but unfortunately I do not have one. The OS does not show up at all. I read that it could be software that was installed could have caused it. I asked my sister if she installed anything at the time, even updates. She said no. I looked at the boot order in the BIOS, and the HDD is primary on the boot list. I also asked my sister if she bumped it, or dropped it, she said no again.

I left the laptop alone from last summer until today. I made a linux live CD (Lubuntu 12.04, which ran fine on the laptop I'm on now) to see if it would boot. I get past the setup (language and such), and it's the same exact thing; Blinking underscore with Black screen. I'm really stuck here, and I'm not sure what to do.

I do have a XP CD, and a XP restore CD lying around, but I don't know if they would be any help considering XP is a whole other and older OS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
