I have a strange activation problem with a relatively new machine from Cyberpower. I am an advanced user, and have built a variety of systems in the past
The OS is Windows 7 64 bit SP1
Apparently when the system was built, a "temporary" OEM activation code was used, since I assume they copy an image onto each machine they build, and the user is supposed to change the code on the side of the machine. It is quite surprising that they did not activate it with the proper code. Or possibly they did, and the machine suffered from the problem below when it left the factory
So, shortly after I got the machine, I had problems, with messages about not being properly activated, and MSE stopped working, and updates would not be received. When I realized that there was an activation problem, I read the code on the side of the machine, and changed the activation code in the system accordingly by going into Computer>Properties, and changing the code in that window.
After I entered the new activation code, the message came up that this could take a while, as apparently MS was checking things out on the Internet. Shortly after that, a message came through that the code was accepted, and the machine was properly registered & activated with MS. And all was now well.
However, since then, the same thing has happened twice again. This last time was a few days ago. The proper code was accepted. I rebooted, and then I went to check the code in the system via right-clicking on "computer", and selecting "properties", the old OEM code was back, so I'll have the same problem again and again.
I contacted CyberPower, and they advised me to run the install again. But that would wipe out all the installed software, and take me a long time.
The machine did not come with a MS Windows disk, but there is a CyberPower disk with Windows 7 SP 1. But I don't know if a "repair" install would fix this problem.
What the devil is going on? I assume there is a registry key that I can access and edit to permanently change the code, but I do not know the proper procedure. I've activated dozens machine in the past, and never had this problem.
There must be a way to correct the activation code, and have the system properly register it in the Registry, and keep it registered.
I can handle Registry edits, but I need the steps to do it.
Does anyone have a solution here?
