How do i recover a lost "my documents" folder?

I backed up my "my documents" folder to my external HDD before formatting. I just checked and for some unexplained reason the only thing in that folder is a desktop.ini. All my files are gone...unbelievable....i can't believe windows screwed me like this....

Is there any way to recover them?
