Trouble with wireless internet- wont load web pages

Hi all,
Wondering if someone can help. I've been having problems where my computer will be connected to the internet but wont load any pages, sometimes for hours at a time. Sometimes it will work, then spontaniously stop again. It remains connected and often still seems like information is being transferred but I can't load any web pages or they're really, really slow. Was having some problems where the connection wouldn't go through to the internet but reinstalling the updated wireless card driver seems to have stopped that.

I've been on the phone to my internet provider. They don't think it's the modem. I've run other computers off the wireless on this modem fine. Checked the IP addresses, reset the modem + checked the settings were ok, run avast, mcaffee and hitman pro scans on the computer (including a boot scan), checked the computer is on internet time, tried multiple browsers (IE, firefox, chrome), checked the LAN isn't working through a proxy nothing seems to work.

I found an old wireless adapter which I'm pretty sure should still work, the computer wouldn't work off that either.
Although the wireless is not working, the computer works fine through the cable.

I contacted ACER phone support who being their usual "helpful" selves said it sounds like a software problem reformat the computer (seems to be their defult response to any problem rather than actually trying to do anything first). Happy to do that if that's what it needs, it'll just be frustrating if I have to reset up the computer again and it still wont work which has happened in the past with their recommendations.

Computer is running windows 7, Acer aspire computer.
Any help very much apprieciated!

Thanks in advance.
