Trouble transferring files from Mac Os

I have a brand new, fully up to date windows 7 system. I am trying to transfer my files over from my old macbook. I have large amounts of music and pictures that I want to get transferred. Many of the folders I am transferring are 20+ gigs, and one is ~60 gigs.

I transferred the folders over my LAN without issue. But when I checked them after transfer, i noticed that the size of the folders on my windows machine and those on the apple laptop are not the same. My music folder on the laptop is 62.1 gigs, but after transferring is only 57 gigs. Other folders are also losing different amounts of size, but in all cases, all the items seem to be present (at least, as much as I can tell from such large folders.)

I want to understand why the folder sizes would be different, and of course to be sure that I am not actually losing data. The transfers do not seem to be getting aborted or cutoff. Is there something different about how mac os and windows 7 track file size or allocate space? Is there some way I can check and make sure that it's not dropping bits of my files?
