[SOLVED] Installing Virtual Machine

Getting a bit fed up with this now, I've been messing with it all day.

All I wanted to do was to install XP on a VM (I'm running Win 7 Pro, by the way) so that I could add screenshots to an abandoned article. Nothing to it, you might say. Thats what I thought, I've done it before with Oracle VirtualBox and seem to remember it being really easy.

So, I installed VB without a hitch and installed XP Pro as guest. Windows update site wouldn't work and IE was hammering my cpu and locking the browser up.

Installed Firefox, managed to install SP3, IE8 and that Malicious software removal tool thingy.

After trying lots of so called solutions including installing guest additions, task manager says cpu in host and guest is at a constant 100% usage. I've given up and decided to try something else.

I knew I couldn't run VMWare cos' of a hardware requirement (hardware assisted virtualisation) that I couldn't meet. I found Windows Virtual PC and straightaway noticed it has the same requirement but they have a way around it.

All I had to do was download this update Download Update for Windows 7 (KB977206) from Official Microsoft Download Center

I'm told it requires validation so I clicked the continue button. Clicking continue on the next page is the download for GenuineCheck.exe but when you run it, it says this version of the tool is no longer supported with no link to the new version.

Help!

Or can anyone recommend some better VM software?

Have pity on me though, my hardware is sadly lacking.
