Windows 7 Updates Causing Problems

Just a little background, I am using a Toshiba L840 laptop and it's only about 8 months old, I've never really had any issues with it whatsoever and I am a designer so it is quite important that it is functional. It is quite a beast for it needs to do and normally speeds through everything.

Anyway I did some updates recently after I noticed that in start> all programs> windows updates it had the red restriction where it would not allow updates. I sorted it out so it would allow me to do so and did the updates. I cannot remember what they were exactly though. Anyway now it has gone back to being set so I am unable to do any updates manually or automatically, this is not the major issue though. Now around every 1-2 hours my computer crashes and or slows down often resulting in me having to restart, sometimes it crashes and I literally have to hold down the power button to get it to restart. I have done some research on the net but have not come to a resolution yet.. Any ideas?

Thanks Tom
