A while ago my hard drive died, so I recently bought and installed a new one. I reinstalled Windows Vista and everything was pretty much the way it was supposed to be. However, I'm currently reinstalling some of the programs I usually use and I've run into a few small issues.
So, here's what's going on:
1).
I've noticed a bunch of files just sitting in my C: directory (not in a folder) that weren't there before (I think). There are:
- Nine text-files (all EULA's claiming that "You have received the software as part of the Visual Studio 9.0 Beta Program");
- Nine .dll files (all named install.res.xxxx.dll (with xxxx being a number));
- Two setup files (called "VC_RED" and "install");
- Two .ini files (called "globdata" and "install");
- One WinRAR archive called "VC_RED");
- One .bmp called "vcredist" that's simply a white rectangle.
There's also a file called "BOOTSECT.BAK", but I think that's the only one that's actually supposed to be there, and that's always been there before.
I've searched around a bit and it seems that these files are associated with "Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 (...)". This is a program that does indeed exist on my computer, but I'm not sure how or when it got installed. It may have been installed alongside Office 2001 (I don't have a newer version :P), which I installed yesterday.
Now I was wondering what these files in my C: directory are exactly and if I should keep them or if I can delete them. And also if I actually need Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 or not (from what I found so far, I probably do need it).
2).
Some other files that I don't recognize have also appeared in C:\users\*username* (with *username* being my username). There are two folders there called ".dbus-keyrings" and ".gstreamer-0.10". The first folder contains a file called "org_gtk_gdbus_general" and the second contains a (.bin) file called "registry.i686".
I have no idea what these folders and files are. Some searching taught me that they are related to Unix/Linux/GNU-things, so the only thing I can come up with is that they might have something to do with QupZilla, which I installed yesterday (Office 2001 and QupZilla were the only two things I installed yesterday).
Should I keep or delete these folders?
3).
This is an entirely different thing that may (or may not) have something to do with the fact that - since I got a new hard drive - I don't have the HP-software (my pc is a HP Pavillion) anymore that was preinstalled on my computer.
You see, I have a port for headphones in the front of my case and it used to work in such a way that whenever I plugged in my headphones, that would automatically override the normal speakers plugged into the audio-port in the back of my case. However, now I have to unplug my normal speakers first, before sound gets played through my headphones.
Do I need some kind of new driver or something? (I have no idea)
4).
I have a keyboard with some additional buttons to regulate volume-levels and pause/play/stop music. Now these still work, but their effects aren't displayed on my monitor anymore (for example, when I pressed the button to lower the volume, a blue bar would appear that would decrease in size every time I pressed that button).

So, yeah... sorry for posting a bunch of seemingly unrelated things in one post. I hope you guys can help me with one or more of these issues, though :).
