I cannot for the life of me find the fix to this issue, but here's the basics:
Compaq Presario CQ60
Current Audio Drivers Installed
-Conexant high definition smartaudio 221
-Intel(R) High Definition Audio HDMI
-High Definition Audio Device
I am not totally computer literate, I just know a few basics, but here's the background on the issue and the fixes I've tried:
One day, I happily turned on my computer and upon start-up, my speakers decided to emit a loud screech. This lasted about 20 seconds, I waited for it to stop and when it didnt, I manually shut off my computer and restarted it. It restarted fine but played no sounds or music what so ever. When I try to un-mute it either from the keyboard or the screen it is unresponsive. When I hover over the speaker icon with the muted "red x" it says:
Volume: 0
Speakers
Conexant high definition smartaudio 221
When I right-click the icon, and select "Open Volume Mixer"
It states that "No Audio Device is installed"
When I select "Playback Devices" from right clicking the sound icon, it shows:
Speakers
Conexant high definition smartaudio 221
Working
It also has a check mark next the the speaker icon signifying that it is in-fact enabled and working.
Still I am getting no sound. When I right click that playback device, "Speakers," I have the Options as follows:
Configure Speakers
Test
Disable
Show Disabled Devices (Checked)
Show Disconnected Devices (Checked)
About Software MIDI Synthesizer
Properties
Configure Speakers does nothing when clicked
Test does nothing as well
Disable does nothing
The Next three options are irrelevant
And Properties takes me to properties. Under properties tab:
General:
-Controller Information: Properties
-Device Status: Device is working properly
-Jack Information: LR (Empty black circle that does nothing when I click it)
-Device Usage: Use this device (Enabled)
Levels:
-Nothing. There is nothing here and the space is blank.
Enhancements:
-Nothing is checked here
-Enhancement Properties: Status: Disabled
This is the issue fully described to my best ability, here are the fixes I've attempted:
-System Restore
-Fix it App
-Re-install Drivers
-Update Drivers
-Re-install & Update Drivers Manually (Browsing for them)
-Disable and Enable all Drivers
-Uninstall and Re-Install Drivers
-Virus Scan
-Malware Scan
There's a few things I havn't tried, mainly because of my lack of skill with computers and they are best saved for a last resort situation:
-Remove and re-install Soundcard
-Complete system re-haul
-Take it to a Professional
I also read a few solutions that involved Enabling the soundcard through the BIOS. I'm unsure of the actual definition and functionality of the BIOS but I'm assuming that it basically lets you manually control your system software settings from start-up. I've attempted this solution but when I enter the BIOS there is no option to alter any kind of "Soundcard," "Audio," "Speaker," or any other variation those in the BIOS. Am I missing it somewhere?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
