[SOLVED] Windows Vista wiped my Windows 7 somehow?

Hello, I'm new to posting on these kinds of forums so I hope I'm doing this correctly. I'd like to just mention that this is probably going to get complicated.

Several years ago my brother had a computer that was running Windows Vista. Something went wrong, the hard-drive became corrupt or something, and he had to get it repaired. I'm not exactly clued into all the details but the computer shop people somehow got rid of the Vista installation and installed Windows 7 - he then gave the computer to me.

For five years or so the computer has been running fine, but yesterday it stopped. It began acting very slowly, and eventually froze, and when I restarted it, it bluescreened. After fiddling around with the commands for a while I loaded up the Windows 7 disk and tried a system restore - that failed. I tried system repair and got the following message:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 03: unknown
Problem Signature 04: -1
Problem Signature 05: ExternalMedia
Problem Signature 06: 1
Problem Signature 07: CorruptBootConfigData
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

I figured that the only thing to do was to completely reinstall Windows 7, which I did, and all of last night my computer was working fine. However, when I returned home today and tried to start it, it came up with this message:

Windows Boot Manager
Choose an operating system to start, or press TAB to select a tool: (Use the arrow keys to highlight your choice, then press ENTER.)
Windows 7
Microsoft Windows Vista

I selected Windows 7, as that's what I was running, and the computer was unable to start.

I loaded up the disk again and was presented with the system recovery options, and this showed up:

Operating System Partition Size Location
Windows 7 0 MB (Unknown) Location
Microsoft Windows Vista 305242 MB (C:) Local Disk

I'm very confused. I have never run Windows Vista on the computer, and when I decided to load up the Microsoft Windows Vista choice and see what happened, voila, my brothers old installion complete with all his old documents, games, etc, were showing up. I was unable to move the mouse for some reason, so I restarted the computer again, and again got asked which system I'd like to load. Selecting Windows 7 took me right back to the unable to load screen.

I'm fed up with trying to figure this out, and I'm unable to take my computer to a shop to be fixed as I'm broke at the moment, and I'm getting a real headache trying to work my way through this.

I'm at a friends house right now, borrowing their computer, and I searched google for some answers, specifically how to remove Vista, and all I could find was that installing Windows 7 should remove the Vista installation, but clearly that didn't work. I'm pretty sure I will have to install Windows 7 again, but I don't want to go through all that again only to have my computer do this same thing tomorrow, so I was wondering if anyone could help.

I'm okay with messing around with computers, but I'm not too savvy when it comes to repairing them, so any easy-to-understand help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

P.s: I'm sure I could scrounge up a Windows Vista disk off a friend if that would somehow help?
