Movie maker failed

Hi guys. First time poster here, but I’m sure I”ll be back a lot more often, now that I know this forum exists.

I have the same problem. Please help! I have an ATI video card. Radeon HD 4200. Running Windows 7 Home Premium, SP 1.

It's worked fine in the past for making/saving movies. But last night I was trying to transfer videos from our video camera (a Samsung camera with an SD card) via USB, and all of a sudden our computer shut off, and so did the camera. The camera won't turn on anymore. (I'm guessing maybe it got a power surge through the USB? But also, I can't save the video files in windows movie maker. They will open so I can watch them and edit them, but can’t save the finished product. I also tried uploading it straight to youtube with the same results. It shows one picture and plays only audio from the movie project.

I have an SD card reader, so I was able to get the file off the card from the video camera. I can see all the movies that were on the card, and play them via quick time on the computer (They are MP 4 files). I can edit, crop them, etc. with Windows Movie Maker. But when I try to save the movie or upload it straight to youtube, it doesn't work. It shows one still shot from the video and just plays audio.

I ran a virus scan, updated "Windows Live Essentials" online, and even tried downloading another video editing software, but nothing works. I also tried editing some of the older videos that were already on the computer before this little incident happened, and the same thing would happen. Windows Movie Maker would act like it was saving it, and then the video would have little exclamation points all over it like it was corrupt.

Any ideas what might be going on?
