Desktop modified/removed?

Hi,

I shut down my laptop (Acer Aspire5740) before bed last night as usual, the system was working fine there was no evidence of something going wrong. Today when I turned on my laptop I first notice that my user account icons had changed positions. I have two password protected accounts but only one gets used, the other one is just a backup/guest account. The main one is usually on the left of the two but had moved to the right. I logged into my main account regardless, and noticed that for the first time since I remember it displayed "Preparing your desktop". It usually only displaces "welcome" then logs in.

Once I logged in I noticed the desktop background had reverted to the Acer basic desktop and all my desktop icons had been removed (bar one or two) and was left with the standard Chrome, Mozilla icons. I tried to check if my documents are there and they have all vanished too.

I am writing this now on the Laptop and it is running as normal in terms of performance but without all my old personalized settings and files as I stated above.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
