packard bell butterfly_s-ec-010uk keeps freezing and wont let me shut down

my laptop will only work in safe mode, I have tried running a spybot search and destroy this come up with a few things but it hasn't made a blind bit of difference, i also tried de fragmenting but that keeps freezing before it finishes and it wont let me do it in safe mode. i also tried to run malwarebytes in safe mode and then the computer crashed again. can i fix this problem without having to restore it to factory settings if not how do i restore it. i'm a student and really need my laptop and just cant afford a new one. any help would really be appreciated thank you x
(also its running on windows vista if thats important)
