PC screen going Black.

Hi all,

I have a bit of a problem. I recently ordered and built my first custom PC. After installing everything via directions, I got the computer working and installed Windows 7 via USB and everything seemed to be working perfectly. I installed all the recent drivers and things seemed to be fine. However, after doing some decently intensive activities (such as watching a 720p/1080p movie/tv show, or playing a game) the screen goes black. I read online that this could be due to the video card drivers. I uninstalled/cleaned the drivers using driver sweeper, and re-installed the drivers. However, the screen goes black (which seems to be at random intervals - but once it goes black the screen never does seem to come back on). Also, if I just leave my computer on by itself for a few hours with non-intensive programs running, and I return to it several minutes/hours later - the screen is often black by then. It is worth mentioning that the PC is hooked up to my Panasonic 50" TV.

Since I have taken the case apart to try and see if connections were loose and what not, I have noticed that what seems to be the hard drive is making sporadic "ticking" noises. It does not sound very good and am unsure if what I am describing could even be a hard drive problem, but I can assume it is not a good thing to hear these noises (if it even is the hard drive - however, to my ear it sounds closer to the hard drive than anything else). I have checked and all the fans are working. My CPU temp doesn't go much higher than 35 degrees when watching videos, and the motherboard and hard drive tend to stay around 20-30 degrees as well.

Seeing as it is my first custom built PC and I do not have any friends who have really custom built a PC before, I do not have extra components kicking around that would allow me to try swapping out parts to find the errors. I have had basic graphics on the screen before (which I am guessing is through the motherboard - such as when it is booted in safe mode). The screen has never went black on me when in the basic graphics mode. Thanks for reading this novel, let me know if you have any suggestions! Thanks.
