Computer Stalls During Power Up

This is a bizarre problem that just happened one day when I started up my computer. Normally when I press the power button to turn on my comp, the fans spin quickly for about half a second to dust off, retunr to normal speed, then booting commences. For no apparent reason, one day I pressed the button and the fans started to dust off, but they didn't stop. They just kept on spinning at an increased rate. Nothing displays on the monitor. To stop it, I have to hold down the power button until it forces a shutdown. When I try again, it boots up normally. The next time I press power, it happens again. There is a pattern of stalling during power up, then not stalling, stalling, then not stalling. The pattern has yet to be broken.

I have a prebuilt computer, and XPS 730. My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. RAM was added to bring it up to 8 GB.
