"Skype can't connect."(Windows 7)

I couldn't find the proper forum for this, feel free to move if it's not appropriate in this forum.

But yeah, every time Skype forces an update on me, it'll either display that message or constantly freeze. Currently, it's the "Skype can't connect." message, that shows up after I type my username and password while pressing Enter afterwards. I followed the official website's tutorial and even restarted my computer, but no avail. I'd appreciate any assistance given.

I have no permission to some files I create

This is a really strange problem that I have. I don't know what it is, but when I create a file from an application such as paint, gimp, notepad, unity, anything really with a name of "Reset" or "Security" I have no permission to it. Like if I name a file with that name, it becomes out of my permission as adminstrator.

Attached is a screenshot showing that the file has no groups once created.

The reason why this is a big problem for me is because a lot of programs are not working right. Any file on my computer with "Reset" or "Security" will not work as I have to add myself to a group which has a permission through the security tab in the properties of the file.

This is just as confusing as it sounds, but I need this to be fixed to finish a project in Unity. My game cannot be saved as Unity creates a file called "Mono.Security.dll" which makes the saving process screw up. This has been bugging me for a bit now, but I need this to stop.

There's probably other filenames that create the problem, but these are 2 that I have figured out.

If you have questions, just ask.

Thank you!

I recently built my first computer a few weeks ago and its been going fine until a few days ago when I'll be playing a game, it will crash and I get a message saying "Windows display adapter has crashed and successfully recovered." If I load the game again, it will immediately go BSOD and restart. My GPU is a Sapphire Radeon r9 280x. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, made sure windows was updated, even done a command prompt system scan. I don't really know what else to do. Please help!!

Have a desktop WIN 7 and a Macbook running Win XP via Parallels.

XP on Mac can see drives folders and files on PC Win 7 OK!
PC Win 7 cannot see MAC XP drives, folders or files. :frown:

Have jumped thro all hoops and protocols to solve the network connection issue but have failed. I am probably too easily confused with the procedure to make this work. :banghead:

Would appreciate some help or illustration of steps to take. Thanks

Software problem - Error: Unable to cast object of type

Hello good people,

I recently installed a software called "CheVolume" which is very handy as it allows you to split the audio on your computer.

AFAIK, the installation itself was smooth and problem free. But when I open it, it gives me an error message which reads:

Error: Unable to cast object of type
'System.Configuration.Internal.ConfigurationManagerInternal' to type
'System.Configuration.Internal.IConfigSystem'.

After some searching, I believe it may be a .NET Framework problem. I already have the latest one installed (I think 4.5, but I'm not sure how to check it) as I downloaded it from the Microsoft website and tried to reinstall, but it tells me that I don't need it.

I'm out of ideas, so I would really appreciate your help.

Thank you for looking.

PowerPivot for Excel 2010 not loading

For some reason the newer version of the Powerpivot addin for excel will not load for me. SQL server 2012 SP1 for Excel 2010 works fine, however when I install SQL server 2012 SP2 for Excel 2010, it will not load.

I install it, open excel, go to addins, go to COM addins, check "powerpivot", click "ok" and then nothing happens.

From my understanding, the only thing I need for Powerpivot to work is the .NET framework which I have (4.6).

Windows Update encountered an unknown error - code 80073712

Hey folks,

I have a laptop computer that is built by Sony and the model is a VAIO VGN-NW225F laptop computer running Windows 7 Home Premium edition SP1.

When I attempted to check for updates in this machine, it gives me an error saying that it "could not check for updates automatically". In addition, it gives me an error code of 80073712.

I've checked that computer for spyware/malware - but there was none. I also defragged the hard drive, but the problem persisted.

I've tried to do the SFC scan, but when I attempt to do that scan (and this was ran under administrator), the error message pops up saying that "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".

Although I didn't run the SFC scan under "safe mode" (yet), I wanted to know how can I fix this problem from re-occurring?

What You Need to Know About Upgrading a Windows Vista PC to Windows 10

Quote:

Microsoft won’t be offering a free Windows 10 upgrade to any old Windows Vista PCs you might have around. Only Windows 7 and 8.1 PCs get to join the new Windows 10 era for free.
But Windows 10 will certainly run on those WIndows Vista PCs. After all, WIndows 7, 8.1, and now 10 are all more lightweight and faster operating systems than Vista is.

The Cost

Upgrading a Windows Vista PC to Windows 10 will cost you. Microsoft is charging $119 for a boxed copy of Windows 10 you can install on any PC.
Still considering upgrading? You might have used — or still be using — the Windows 10 preview as a “Windows Insider.” Microsoft has made some confusing statements, but the reality is that you won’t be able to upgrade to the final release of Windows 10 unless you have a Windows 7 or 8.1 license. Windows Vista licenses aren’t allowed to upgrade.

Startup repair cannot repair this computer

Started yesterday when I tried to turn my computer on. I don't usually turn it off but just randomly did the night before. When I turned it back on I got a message saying 'No signal along detected'. I switched the cord to a HDMI but nothing changed. I then unplugged the cord from the motherboard and plugged it into the GPU. When I started it back up again it took me to the startup repair screen and I ran the startup repair but got the message:

'Startup Repair cannot repair this computer'

I tried this several before going into the advance option. From there I tried the scan again and restoring it to an earlier point (didn't work because I've never restored it) and every other option available. Lastly I tried command prompt with sfc/scannnow, it then started scanning but said that it will need to reboot to work, I rebooted the computer and nothing happened it just brang me back to the startup repair screen. I tried this several times as well but get the same result. I've also tried hitting F8 and selecting disable automatic restart on system failure - nothing happens. Start it up in safe mode - nothing happens. Chksdk - nothing happens. I've also tried plugging the cord back into the motherboard but just get a black screen.

I've been on other threads with the same kinda problem and seen that Avast can cause this problem but as far as I am aware I don't have avast installed on my computer.

I really need someone's help please - I'm going mental :banghead:

WMP 12 problems with mp3 worsening (K-Lite related)

$

Hey there, been a long time since I been here, which is good, I guess?

It all started more than a year ago (late 2013-early 2014). I started to have mp3s WMP couldn't play on its own anymore, which meant I had to install "Windows 7 codec pack". It all went fine for a while after that.
Then, being a gamer, I wanted to renew my components (actually, the only old components I kept were the PSU, HDDs and the case) so I had installed Windows 7 again, this time on an SSD.
Then it actually got a step worse. I could no longer play the MP3s, even with "W7 Codec Pack" installed. I then had to rely on K-Lite Codec Pack, which makes a certain glitch sound before starting some of the mp3s.
I've pretty much accepted all this stuff as time went on, but yesterday I updated K-Lite Codec Pack to 11.2 from 10.5. Now it won't automatically start some mp3s. Even when pause/playing it does nothing. I have to go to WMP and click the playing bar somewhere so it starts. What kind of weird stuff is that?

I'd like to know how I can make WMP play all my mp3s (with or without K-Lite, but preferably without the glitch sound) without me having to start them manually. I don't like using VLC & WMP Classic for my music (just for video).

I'm guessing this is pretty much going to be about configuring K-Lite? I'm up for that:thumb:

Slow boot, right click C drive explorer freezes

Hey guys, new to the forum.

I've had this issue for a very long time but I have never gotten around to fixing it so I'm gonna try get some help now :)

Issue #1

Whenever I right click on either my C: drive (where my OS is installed) or my D: drive (my 2nd hdd for data) windows explorer stops working and then restarts. I have no idea why! Here is a picture:

Issue #2

This issue has only started happening the last week or so - no idea why. Whenever I boot it stays on starting windows screen for like 2-3 minutes and then takes another 1 minute or so to log in.

I have 8GB Ram and an i5 running w7 ult 64 bit.

I have no Anti virus (uninstalled incase it was slowing boot), ran a chkdsk and found nothing and I ran DiskCheckup and it said everything was a-okay!

Trying to do factory reset on Toshiba A200-244

Hi

I'm trying to do a factory reset on a Toshiba Satellite A200-244 laptop that's running in Windows Vista, but don't have a CD to do this. I've tried the 'How to Factory Restore your Computer' on here but can't get past Step 4 under 'Toshiba'... there is no 'Restore Application'.

Any idea how I can get this sorted?

Have attached a photo of what I can see when following up to Step 4, and when I click 'Restoring the complete Windows operating system' it comes up with the other message (see below photo)

Change Screen Size Virtually

Hello All,

I am having a DELL Inspiron 530 Desktop with DELL SE198WFP monitor. There are a few dead pixels on the sides of the monitor screen ............ So, was wondering - Is there a way to change the screen size virtually i.e. define the screen size in Windows to be used for display while excluding the Dead pixels on the sides. Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

Running - Windows 7 Ultimate - 64 bit
Monitor - DELL SE198WFP (Analog)

If there is any other information that I may have missed ....... just ask for it.

Regards,
Joojo.

Win 7 license question/problem

Hello to you all!

I am recently trying to fix some stuff on my Toshiba Satellite P500, but I encountered one problem about Win 7 license.

Someone in the past has hard formatted whole HDD thus deleting orginal preinstalled Windows 7 HP x64 OA. Recently computer is running on some other Win version, but I would like to get back to the original one.

I got the sticker with a license activation code underneath, but every time I tried to install Win 7 HP x64 and activate it with this code it says that this code does not apply to this version of Windows. I guess its all about this OA thingy.

In the given circumstances I wanted to download clean official Windows 7 x64 OA image, but had no luck in finding one. How can I get it? Or, what are my options to get back to original state?

I heard of the possibility of buying Restore Disk from Toshiba for some price (I think it was around 50 eur or so, not sure), but honestly I would like to avoid additional potentially unnecessary costs.

Is there any low-cost or no-cost way of fixting it? Needless to say that it would be nice/better to have everything original, especially when having possible free Win10 free upgrade in mind.

Thank you for your help in advance!

PS. I've googled this problem and found some other forum thread about it but still I haven't found any solution to this.

Installing Windows after Ubuntu "Setup was unable to create a new system partition"

Hello,

I have a Hp Pavillion dm4 laptop running Ubuntu 14.04 and now want to install Windows 7 64 bit and make the laprop dual booted. I burnt the Windows installation iso file onto a pen drive and booted from it. It runs till the dialog box "where do you want to install Windows", It shows the following partitions on my Hard Drive.

I am also attaching a screenshot of output of GParted from my Ubuntu. It shows 50.5 GB as unknwon file system, and thus I would like to install Windows 7 on to this partition.

I guess in the windows 7 installation setup, it shows 50.5 GB as System partition and that is the same partition that is pointed to by Gparted.

However, when I click on "Next" when trying to install Windows it says

Setup was unable to create a new partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information.

I have no idea why this error is being thrown. Could someone please help me out?
