have a laptop with only one usb port on it which works, so I decided to buy a usb hub. When I connect the hub I am getting a message that ' this product will perform better if connected to a high speed usb 2.0 port. For a list of available ports click here.' meaning the box. I have looked at usb in devices manager when I open it up I have 3 host controllers a usb mass storage device and 4 usb root hubs. How do I know which one I am using? i've also opened up ports and I have (com+lpt) amd printer port lpt1. How can I get this hub to work?

Windows 7 64-bit

Hi everybody :

First of all, thanks to other members' support and advice. Much appreciation. Second, just want to let TechSupport Forum know, that I'm "still in the learning phase", I might be asking a LOT of questions. I'm thinking about (just considering it right now) building another system. One concern I have is if I go the way of Windows 64-bit....if I understand the information correctly, I would have to have a 64-bit CPU. Correct ? And of course, the usual...........64-bit drivers....etc...............

Thanks in advance,
garystan

Two operating systems

Hi.Good day.My son had this laptop sitting idle so i decided to boot it up and start using it, as mine started working very slow. He could not remember the login password so i reinstalled Windows Vista (thats what he had on it). After updates and everything is working fine i had open a file that i had on a usb flash drive. So i went into computer to look for the removable disk to open it. It was then that i noticed that local disk d is full, its red, 1.33 GB free of 37.2GB.Is there any way to delete all or some of the contents of this partition. Also i had forgotten to mention that at start up i am presented with two operating systems(is it the BIOS screen?) to select which operating system i want to start. The two are the same Windows Vista so i select the first one. Also if i double click on the local disk d which is showing red i see everything that is of windows. That is if i open program files. Is this supposed to be so and if not how do i fix it.

I Hope I have attached both ping and tracert data.
I have deleted and reinstalled Yahoo messenger without luck.
Any ideas where I should start looking???

Taskeng.exe KEEPS POPPING UP!

 Hey can someone help? I seem to keep having a small black box come up that says Taskeng.exe and it says something about not being able to find a specific file this has been happening for at least 2 months i've used Avast to scan for viruses but it keeps saying my computer is clean.

I guess what i'm trying to ask is how do I get rid of Taskeng.exe from popping up and is it a serious problem?

Strange "SYSTEM" partition on factory version OS

I just bought a used HP Compaq 6000 pro SFF. On the Disk Management Console, there is displayed a separate partition labeled "SYSTEM". It is exactly 2 GB. On the menu you get when you right click on it, "Open" and "Explore" are unavailable. I would like to know what the partition is all about and, in particular, whether I can delete it.

Laptop taking a very long time to boot

I have a Lenovo Z850 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. I?ve had it for over 3 years and it has steadily been taking longer and longer to fully boot. It only takes a minute or so to get to the login screen, but once I login, it takes over 30 minutes to get to the point where I can open programmes, and then it is incredibly slow. I can feasibly use it in Safe Mode with networking, but it still takes 10 min+ to boot. Only a week ago, it was taking 15+ minutes to boot, but was still usable, so I wasn?t too concerned as I was looking into buying a new computer after Christmas anyway.

I have checked the hard drive and RAM and there appear to be no hardware issues. I have run several virus/spyware programmes, CCcleaner etc to no avail. A while ago, the fan got clogged up and the laptop started to overheat, so I am wondering if this damaged something.

I can?t even do a full Windows restore, there is a recovery partition, but I can?t find a system image within it. I don?t have a backup disc. Is buying a reinstall disc a feasible option or is there anything else I can do before giving in and buying a new laptop?

Thanks

Some applications won't run

I have suddenly been confronted with an issue where certain long-installed applications will no longer run in WIN7 Ultimate.

System specs:

ASUS G75VW ROG laptop
I7 3610QM CPU
WIN7 Ultimate 64 bit / Windows Defender / Experience Index = 7.3
Firefox V43.xx
16GB Ram - PC3 10700
500GB SSHD (Samsung 850EVO) boot drive
1TB Seagate (ST1000LM014-1EJ164 Hybrid drive) for data
GeForce 660M (2GB) nVidia graphics

The kicker is that I can neither re-install, nor REMOVE the several affected packages, as none of the options will run. One of the main problems is VUZE, which I use for eBook distribution and exchange within my author circle. We all keep the latest versions of the various manuscripts we collaborate on seeded and available at all times to all in the group.

Trying to remove the package to re-install it from Ad/Remove programs does nothing. Trying to re-install also fails with no error message - the install process just STOPS mid operation and nothing further happens. Three other laptops I use occasionally have not developed this anomaly, despite the same updates having run on them.

I ran SFC /SCANNOW and it stated that SOME O/S files were "damaged and could not be repaired." This apparently happened after a recent "Windows Update" but rolling back the update with several recent System Restore Points has had no positive effect.

I have run all of the recommended standard diagnostics and anti-spyware apps and the system is totally clean according to them. I run no toolbars or "search assistants."

It looks as if I am looking at a fresh install which, with my extensive configuration takes a couple weeks at minimum to re-populate all my software and utilities. During that time I am totally non-productive in my normal tasks. I do not have a recent image of the boot drive, as the one I created about 9 months ago has just been lost in an external HDD failure. NOTE: Toddlers and external HDD's do not mix well!

The system boot was imaged to the new SSHD with the supplied Samsung Migration Utility about 3 months ago from a working boot on the system's original HDD. That HDD has since been wiped and discarded. There have been no problems with operation up until now. The faster boot time has been PHENOMENAL! 15 seconds from power on to GO!Any suggestions or tricks before I do a clean O/S install??

Intel Processors

Hi everybody :

I was looking at an Intel i5-4570 Processor on newegg.com. And, apparently, this model is sold without a heatsink / fan. ( newegg DID post an informational screen stating that a newer version of this model is available----the i5-4590 WITH a heatsink / fan. Question : In a scenario like this, without a heatsink / fan, what size would the heatsink / fan be ? Just for the sake of information (for later). And, I realize that WITH a heatsink /fan included, it makes installation that much easier.

thanks in advance,

Windows 10 - Turning On And Loading

$

Recently I've been having a problem at turning on my computer. When I shut down my computer I've to wait around 10 minutes, and while it happens the computer is working on something without being on. The light that shows the computer is working on something stays on for the 10 minutes. I can't turn the computer on, as I said I've to wait 10 minutes. So it's really annoying, because if I've a bug I need to shut down and then wait some time to turn it on.

When I finally got to turn the computer sometimes it has problems, doesn't load completely (I've waited and still not loading completely). Applications don't load very good. And I've to restart my computer for them to load correctly (some of them don't load so I've to restart them again for the second time) and since I've to wait 10 minutes, then it becomes more annoying.

These problems have happened to me since I got Windows 10 (not actually from the start from when I downloaded it, it was around 1 month later). So I'd like to know any fix for this. I can't play correctly anymore, I've to wait tons of time. Before it took me around 2 minutes for me to be able to play, now it takes around 25 minutes. I'd like to know why this occurs and any fix to this problem. I believe it's either a virus, hardware problem or Windows 10.

Thanks!

[SOLVED] Windows Vista Backup Hell

$
0
0
Dell XPS410 Vista Home Premium SP2

One reason I didn't continue backing up my data with Windows Vista was the lengthy process of retrieving that data. Here is an example: I want to copy the contents of 'Birds' folder from the backup disk to a new Ext HDD.

First, I click on 'Computer'
Then, 'Disk 3 (F:)'
Then, 'Doug PC folders'
Then, 'Backup Set'
Then 'Backup files'
Then 'Backup files folder 72 zip'
Then 'C'
Then 'Users'
Then 'Doug'
Then 'Pictures'
Then, 'Birds' folder
Then, Copy and paste

Then, if I wanted to copy data from 'Folder 71', I would have to click all the above in reverse order, back to 'Folder 71'
Then 'C'
Then 'Users'
Then 'Doug'
Then 'Pictures'
Then, 'Birds' folder
Then, Copy and paste

I would have to go through this process 72 times in order to get all the data from this one disk copied to the new drive in a practical, useable form.

I probably could just copy the entire disk at one time. If I did, I guess I would have to go through the above process to find what I wanted on the new drive.

I don't suppose there's any way to get to the contents of these individual folders on the backup disk without going through this lengthy process. Is there?

Hi, so trying to figure out why my gf's computer is so slow, possibly malware? I think Windows Defender is off, so would not interfere with her Kaspersky. Windows 10 (could not find that section on this site). Thanks very much...

Hi
I successfully transferred my photos from my Iphone into my PC, after while I found them changed to unknown random file types. I tried to change extension by renaming the file but still Windows doesn't recognize the file.

Win7 vs Wifi Issue

Hello, I had a win 7 crash that could be fixed only by reinstalling the entire program, wiping out all my prior info. Sigh. At any rate, when I got it back up and was going to reinstall favored programs, my Wifi was gone. The computer did not have any wifi at all. Only acknowledged wired. I got a ethernet cord out and hardwired it and went online to get and install a virus protection program and for grins and giggles, downloaded Windows 10. Voila! My wifi was back as if it never left. I got annoyed w Win 10 as it wouldn't let me read some of my "older" books that required (obviously) outdated programs. So, I uninstalled:banghead: it, b/c really- who wants to repurchase stuff? Now my wifi is gone again and I am back to hardwired to try and figure out what in the sam hill is going on. Any ideas?

I have win 7 with live mail 2011, my husband has win 8.1with live mail 2012. Microsoft sent an email saying in a few weeks we needed to update them or we won't be able to use them. I did that last week. Today, both live mails are stuck on offline. We both have IE11.
