Hi guys,
This is a copy I posted to "Networking Support" here
http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...a-1177881.html
Wayne helped out with running a couple tests. But no final conclusions on my issue. I see there are other managers here so perhaps there will be alternate ideas?
Here is our opening dialog for our issue on a Gateway P-7811FX w Vista.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP / ADVICE !
Hi Everyone,
I am new here. My wife and I are from Indiana and moved to Uruguay South America nearly three years ago. There are no "Best Buy"'s here and we do not speak fluent Spanish. Hence I am here hoping to find some help. We are both savvy enough and brave enough to plunge into our laptops and work on them...with guidance :-)
Here is what happened and what we have done so far.
We had a major storm a month or so ago. Much lightning and slow, too slow, to shut down our laptops. Lightening hit fairly close to our house. My wife said she heard a "click" from her laptop right before witnessing the strike. Ever since, no internet on her laptop. I lucked-out and my laptop is fine and able to get online.
Her laptop is an 8 year old Gateway P-7811FX.
This is what we have tried.
Her green light on the Ethernet card is still on and green.
With help, we "pinged" the laptop and the result was a '4'. The person who was helping us said that means the Ethernet card is still good. He further said we should reconfigure the IP and Drivers. I have uninstalled the driver for Network Controller and tried to reinstall the driver which I DLd beforehand. No luck. I should mention that in Device Manager the non working devices are shown as follows:
1. Mass Storage Controller
2. Network Controller
3. SM Bus Controller
When I read about re configuring, the first step was to go into networks and right click on a network place and go to properties. This is where we are totally stuck. When we open networks, there are literally no connection icons present, not even Local Connection.
From what we have learned so far, I think it may be(?) a bad PCI port that our working ethernet card is plugged into??? Maybe the port was what "clicked" right before the lightning?
So this is probably a good starting point for this thread.
Thank you all for any help and advice you may have to offer.
We have instant email notification on and will be checking often.
Have a great day/nite where you are and thanks again :-)
