Computer just randomly started failing, programs not opening/closing/not working

Alright so let me explain the sequence of events that led to this happening. Not sure if they're related but I have no idea where to even begin to start to try to fix this.

1) My computer was on, streaming via WMP 12 to my Xbox 360 from an external WD 2 tb usb 3.0 hard drive. All of a sudden it lost connection to the computer. So I went to check it out. Didn't find anything wrong that jumped out, so I decided to restart and see if that fixed it.
2) After the first restart, the external HDD failed to recognize. After being unplugged and plugged back in, it recognized fine, no files missing or anything. Still wouldn't show up on the 360 though. No change in config and it's been working fine for about 5-6 months. So I kept restarting and trying different stuff to get WMP to stream.
3) 3 restarts in and it all of a sudden showed up on the 360. The files all came up but it kept saying the connection to the computer was lost. I started to notice other things going wrong as well on the computer. My torrent program, Deluge, wouldn't connect to anything but I could still get on the internet. Note that the torrent program is saving to the internal HDD. No changes in config to the torrent client.
4) Another restart to attempt to fix that. Nothing. Programs started either not opening or not closing (even through task manager, they just remain stuck in the processes area). Explorer was freezing constantly (very unusual for my computer). I decided to defrag the external to see if that would solve that problem. It froze in the middle after running for a few hours. I cancelled it and then it wouldn't recognize the disc at all. It still showed up even after I unplugged it.
5) The computer is continuing to having problems with closing processes and getting stuck. As I'm typing this explorer.exe isn't even running.

I've never encountered a problem like this before and have no idea where to start. I've ran a full system scan with both Malwarebytes Pro and Microsoft Security Essentials, found nothing. No recent changes that I can think of. I'm very close to reinstalling Windows, but I hate to lose all my program configs and what not. I'm also just praying that my hdd is ok.

Can't check too much off hand until I restart but I wanted to get this up asap.

Running a custom build Windows 7 ultimate, version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601. 12 gb ram, 3.2 ghz amd x4. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
