dual monitor -OS boot split over 2 monitors

Hi all

I have an older (aka ancient...8 yr old) system with a Gigabyte EP43-DS3 mobo. I have a dual monitor set up for video editing - my main is a 23" Samsung connected via DVI cable to DVI port, the second a 20" Acer connected via blue VGA Dsub cable to VGA Dsub port.

This is the same setup I have had for a number of years without any problems.

I recently upgraded my video card to a nVidia GT 740 which has 2 DVI ports, a D-sub VGA port and an HDMI port. I had been having some problems with the older card (GT 520) - driver crashes, colour shifts etc.

After installing the new card then the drivers from the CD and then updating them from the net I started having problems:

1) when booting, the splash & post etc screen comes up on my Acer (second) monitor, then when Windows has started it switches to the log in screen on my Samsung (main) monitor.
2) when I go into Windows colour management via Control Panel it identifies my second monitor as number one, when I go into nVidia control panel or Windows "change resolution" panel both read the Samsung as number one monitor

There seems to be some confusion in the system as to which is the number one monitor.

Would this be a BIOS issue? is the BIOS using the VGA connection as the main until Windows opens then uses the preferences I have set for monitor ID? Can this be rectified within the BIOS settings?

I don't have another DVI cable at the moment and don't want to spend the $$$ if I don't have to and am not sure whether this would solve the issue - I'm on a pension and all $$$ count!

I need a little recovery partition help

Last week I purchased a very lightly used HP TouchSmart 610 series PC. The original owner had bought it for his kid to take to college but for some reason the kid didn't want it and now it is mine.

It originally came with Win7 installed. The original owner formatted and installed Win10 but did not have activation codes. Also, during this process, it would appear that he formatted the recovery partition. If I open the file manager, I see an 'E drive' that is named HP_RECOVERY. It has 16 GB of free space and there is nothing on the drive except two system folders. One is Recycle.bin and the other is System Volume Information. Right now, when I start the PC I can't get into the recovery partition. When I hit the F11 key (several times) during boot up, the computer just boots into Windows. I'm guessing that since the recovery partition was formatted there's nothing to get into.

Since I don't want to pay to activate Win10 on this machine I think I would like to put Win7 back on. I have a Win7 disk that I paid for. It was originally intended for an old laptop that was running XP at the time. I never actually installed it because after buying the disk it sat for over a month before I made time to backup all my XP stuff. Then I dropped the laptop and that was all she wrote. I never got around to taking it back and now it's been over five years. I doubt I could get a refund.

Here's my question: Is there a way to put that Win7 disk on the recovery partition of this HP TouchSmart? If it is possible, can somebody point me to a guide on the internet? I would like to have it very similar to the way it came from the factory.

I've done some google searching but haven't found anything that seems to address my current situation. As always, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having some strange issues with my pc. I apologise in advance for my lack of knowledge on the subject but the people I usually ask for tech support are stumped.

When I boot my computer up normally, when it gets to the welcome screen large black lines appear going horizontally across the screen.

When it reaches the desktop I usually can't see anything but occasionally I can see the cursor in random places on the screen as if it was a broken laptop screen with the black covering the desktop. Sometimes however I can't even get to the desktop as the pc just switches itself off after the welcome screen.

When I boot the computer in safe mode however the lines don't appear, I can use the computer just fine (allbeit without access to games and the like).

Again i'm very sorry for my ignorance on this and if anything needs to be said more clearly then please ask away, I hope you all can help.

Thank you in advance.

Hard Drive Recovery

Hi,
I owned an HP G62-144DX laptop which about a month or two ago would no longer power on. After trying multiple batteries, power adapters, and replacing the power outlet panel itself, there was no success - the blinking light would not illuminate. That is a different story however. I'm not interested in fixing it as it is old and I've purchased another laptop from a friend with some better specs. I've been having some issues with the wifi on the new laptop but that is for another thread. I also have a custom-built desktop PC that I am using. While I've given up on repairing the old laptop, I wanted to recover data from its hard drive. It is a 500GB drive.

I removed the HD, put it into a ziplock and brought it to a Micro Center nearby, intending to buy a SATA to eSATA cable to hook it up to my new laptop and transfer data. The clerk instead suggested that I buy a plug-and-play hard drive enclosure, which would allow me to effectively turn my HD into an external USB 2.0 device. So I purchased that (an Inland GD25621 Model Series: IL25621-U2).

After installing my HD into the enclosure I plugged it into my desktop. The corner pop-up appeared "Installing device drivers" and after a few seconds "Device drivers installed successfully". The drive is appearing in my device manager under "Disk Drives" as "USB Device", and though it appears to be working properly it is not appearing in "My Computer" and I cannot access the data.

I headed over to the "Disk Management" tab and it appears as "Disk 1" (Disk 0 being my internal drive), and next to it is an icon with a red down arrow, and the text "Unknown" and "Not Initialized". Right clicking the icon gives me the option to "Initialize Disk", which I selected, and was prompted to choose a partition style, either MBR or GPT. Upon selecting either option I am met with an error popup reading "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

After a google search and reading a few articles about the error, I began troubleshooting. I made sure the connections were all good, tried restarting, and tried different USB ports, but with no changes. Some articles suggested that I may need to change the transfer mode in the IDE channel properties, however I was unable to follow their steps as my device did not seem to appear as the advanced settings that it said to change do not appear for me. At this point I am unsure how to proceed.

hard drives corrupted

Hi all. Please don't laugh at me I am not very tech savvy but am trying to learn as much as I can.

OK
A few days ago my pc was working fine.

Then yesterday I switched on and loaded a film for my oldest daughter to watch. When I opened my hard drive to browse for a film... black lines and dashes covered my screen and it froze and then refused to boot again after that.

I bought a new se agate blue 1tb hard drive and re installed windows 7 ultimate 64bit.

And obviously it all worked beautifully. But when I attached either of my older drives my pc did the black line thing again and froze completely...

I have vital info I need off the old drives.... they both have an older windows 7 32 os on them if that might be causing the problem I don't know.

Please if anyone has any advice it would be appreciated

Cannot access backed up partition because no drive letter

$

Preamble:

I keep my system in one partition and documents in a second on drive 0.

Recently, i attempted to set up xp in even another paritition. That's a whole other story. I ran into trouble, gave up, ended with a fouled up boot manager and decided to reinstall windows 7 from the install cd.

Before reinstalling windows, I made a partition on a second, exterior hard drive and backed up my documents partition in it.

Problem:

With Windows reinstalled and with the exterior hd connected, the partition with the documents does not show up in My Computer. It does, however, show up in Disk Management. But it has no drive letter. And if you open the right click menu on that partition, everything is greyed out except "delete partition" and "help."

Maybe I neglected to assign a drive letter on the back up partition? But wouldn't the system do that automatically? Maybe the drive letter assigned by the system conflicts with a drive letter on the inside hd?

How do I rescue my backed up documents?

Hello to all .
On this PC Compaq dektop with windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, the CPU works at 100%. the PC is idle - could you give me any suggestions on how to fix it?
I attach screenshots and hardware log .

The problem has existed for a long time - this is the PC of a friend of mine, a native with Windows Vista 64bit and then upgraded to win 7 ultimate 64 bit. yesterday in his house I captured screenshots.
I tried to start it in Safe mode it is the CPU usage value drops to 10% percent .... it's all right ---. I noticed that when I start the PC in "normal mode the CPU 41 starts processes, works well, after starting all processes, to complete loading squirts everything 100%.
I do not know what to do to figure out what is causing the problem

thanks for the tips

I want to share some files between two machines, Win 7 and Win 10.
These files are for an old vesion of Quicken.

Both machines show "Drive" in the google "pull down". I put the file there and both machines have access.

Problem, The files are not on either machine and Quicken can't see them.

"OPen With" prompts me to get an app. But I already have Quicken.

Does this ever download so I can use them?
Or do I need a Google machine?

start windows 7 normally from start-up repair CMD

Hi, so my laptop is not booting up.
The problem is that my keyboard is damaged and I need to use a wired/wireless USB keyboard, however at initial login screen it gives me two options launch start up repair or run
PHP Code:

start windows normally

, however my keyboard will not let me tab or use up/down, although my mouse works but that is useless on these screens.
So every time it launches start-up repair because I cannot change option.
Now, here is the kicker! It lets me use USB keyboard and mouse on System recovery options!

So, I am stuck in this system recovery screen and trying to run things in command prompt, but not found the solution yet.

If I can command CMD to run "start windows normally" then it should get me back on track!!!

Anybody know this command?
I searched online for a couple of hours and had no luck.

I also tried to force safe mode via cmd, but also stuck in a secondary loop of safe mode in system recovery also. Any tips on how to undo this would be great also.

My laptop is an asus g53jw with win7 build 7600.

Thanks

Backup software choices for LTO tape drive?

$

After having abandoned my 35 GB Sony AIT Tape drive when I upgraded to Windows 7 as its backup software no longer supports tape drives, I just bought an HP LTO5 1.5 TB tape drive but will need to get a backup program. The HP page says you get a free download but I don't know if I'll be able to since I bought the drive used.

What backup programs support LTO tape drives and have these features:

Absolute necesscity:
-Ability to backup open files
-Ability to do incremental backups

Would be nice:
-Be able to restore without having to re-install Windows first
-Ability to set scheduled backups set to be on specific tapes and if the wrong tape is in it will request the correct one

I'd like the software to ideally be free but otherwise under $100.

Thanks

Windows update failures -- SURT tool and Netframe

Please help me in solving a windows update failure. I have windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64.

The two windows updates that fail are
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821)
any Microsoft.NET framework both 4.5.2 (KB2901983) and 4.6.1 (KB3102433)

I found a similar thread and followed the steps in it, but no joy.
Performed SFC /scannow, but the WRP did not find any integrity violations. I tried to run the SURT tool (same tool as KB947821) by a manual download and run but it reports the "hotfix failed to install". So I don't have a SURT tool log to submit.

What's the next step?
